1971 SAAB 9-5 2dr Wagon

Up for auction, a great RARE classic Swedish 2 dr wagon thats lived probably 80% of
its whole life here in the Arizona desert. I listed as a 1970/71  because
the underhood tag says August of 1970, but the title says 1971.  Great & RARE color combination
from the factory (RB1B)  As you can see, its sort of an Robin-eggshell blue. 90% of the paint is original.
WIth a black and dk red interior. Both are wonderful for a daily driver and really I wouldnt redo
either one. More people appreciate SURVIVOR cars like this at car shows and events then restored
examples.
RECENT work done to get the car roadworthy was: changed most all the fluids, drained the gastank,
cleaned out the carb some, New fuel filter, battery and, the car runs nice. So nice, the last owner
drove the car on a 100 mile round trip from Tucson to a neighboring town and back and the
car ran great. The only thing really holding the car back from being a daily driver that I can see
would be the tires. The Sonnet Alloy rims fit the wagon pretty well and look good, but the car
does come with the original steel wheels and wheel covers, which is a plus for the buyer.
Read on for more info on this cool wagon !

OUR 100% feedback speaks for itself
and many of our feedback are from about 15 cars we sold just this past
year here on EBay. We put more time and effort into our ads making it much
easier for the potential buyers to bid with confidence.
NOT MANY OF THESE CARS WHERE MADE BACK IN THE DAY and we all know
NOT MANY ARE EVEN LEFT ON THE ROAD ANYMORE.

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF SNL (Saturday Night Live) maybe you can tell me, didnt
TOONCES the Driving CAT drive one of these in their skits before the car went
off the cliff ??? Ill have to google it and find out !
Would make a great Christmas gift for yourself or your family !!

DRIVETRAIN:
the V4 runs and sounds good. It starts up easily every time and I believe
the drivetrain to be all the orginal components. No smoke or weird noises
other then the normal stuff for a 40+ yr old car. Clutch and column
mounted shifter works well and easy to use. The car has what was probably
dealer installed A/C at one time. Compressor and bracket included, just
not currently installed. But its a great plus for a car like this. As is its
easily a daily driver for in town driving around. Choke may not be working
because it doesnt idle great when its cold, but once warmed up its fine.
You get thumbs up from everybody and eveytime you park it it draws a
little crowd even just stopping for gas. Its not fast, but its smooth and
cool to drive around. Ive taken it to a few local cruise nites and it got
more attention then most cars around it, including a Tesla coupe !
I would put a Petronix electronic conversion in it if I was going to keep
it and probably a set of plugs in it next.

INTERIOR:
being that this cars been in a garage most of its life and tinted
windows, the interior is in very nice shape for its age. Pass seat
I see a small split starting, but the car is essentially like a car
time capsule and the way it sits you could easily drive it around
and enjoy it as is. The Az heats been a little hard on the rubber
and vinyl, but everything for its age is very usable and all seems
functional. Except the windshield wipers, Im missing one of them.
But they work and even come with an extra wiper motor.
I didnt see a 5th stock spare steel wheel or jack under the back
seat.

EXTERIOR: As mentioned, original paint and color
A few minor dings on the car and paints a little faded.
I hadnt tried buffing it out fully yet, but Im sure the paint would
buff out pretty nicely with an afternoon of a little rubbing
compound and a nice coat of wax. Windows where tinted, typical
for Az cars, many yrs ago and all the glass looks. The chrome is
in pretty nice shape on the bumpers and all the stainless brightwork
still looks nice. Missing is the original gas cap :( . The driving/fog lites
on the front bumper are cool. You may notice the little wiper cowl
cover is missing in the pics. It does come with the car, we just had
it off planning on r&r-ing the wiper motor.
This is NOT A RESTORED or even mildly restored car. Its just one
of those cars the previous owners where meticulous and tried to
keep what they had in good nick. And Id say the wear and tear
is not near as obvious as most cars this age.
As anyone who knows these cars knows rust on these cars are their
worse enemy. But luckily this cars never snow or salted roads.
This car has mild rust issues compared to most cars out there
this age.
It has rust in the typical areas but not NEAR as bad as one may
expect. Bottom of the front doors and hatch door is most apparent.
And what looks to be a little paint touch up in those areas.
(not all that well either) but again, its not a show car or restored
Saab 9-5. Please take the time to let all 150+ pics load and check
out the areas mentioned, youll be amazed about the LACK of rust
in those areas.
So if you are planning on buying the car and restoring
it, those areas in question would be Much Easier less costly to
repair then youd expect. I even pulled up the carpet some under
both front floorboards. Pass side very clean, drivers side has some
small rust to mention, but the floors are not soft and you could
leave them alone if you chose to. One may choose to put some
Por15 on one or both to prevent them from getting any worse.
But again, its not bad enough to even worry about it as a daily
driver or weekend cruiser.

Suspension:
Overall again, the car feels good for a daily driver or for a road
trip. About the only thing I would report is the rear shocks on these
cars are unique, and the ones on this car should probably be
rebuilt as far as what this car needs in the near future. Its a little
mushy back there, but again for its age, to be expected. No noticeable
leaks for excessive fluids leaking under the car anywhere.
Brakes feel great too and stop the car well.

This car is 90% rust free Arizona car

These cars rarely even come up for sale anymore
9-5s in this shape at what we consider a low fair reserve
are even more rare.
When we bought it, it was planned on to be a keeper
but things changed and Im going to have to pass it on to
someone else to enjoy, and there are alot of SAAB
enthusiast out there !! AND wagon lovers too !!

Check out ALL the pics below ----->

it may take a full minute for them all to load if you have a
slow connection, so be patient AND looks for the extra schroll
bar on the right side.
Az gets maybe 12" a yr of rain and Az very dry climate.
more info AFTER the pics etc. There are 100 large pics.

One-off 1997 Saab 900 EX prototype headed to auction

Sat, Sep 23 2023

An obscure and fascinating part of Saab's history is looking for a new home. The one-off 1997 900 EX was built in Norway to celebrate the company's 50th birthday, and while it was not approved for production it shows what a sporty, 900-derived coupe could have looked like. British auction house Bonhams explains that Per Ekstrom, an auto body expert and enthusiast according to The Drive, worked closely with Saab and Norwegian road authorities to create the 900 EX. His goal wasn't merely to create an eye-catching coupe that's pretty to look at but impossible to drive; he wanted the model to be street-legal and drive like a regular-production car. The auction description notes that the 900 EX was built by experienced professionals with Saab's blessing and that the process required between 3,000 and 4,000 hours of work. The end result is stunning. While the headlights and the grille create a strong visual link between the EX and the second-generation 900, which enthusiasts often refer to as the GM900, the roof line has been lowered by nearly three inches and the body has been considerably widened thanks in part to 9000 CS-sourced front and rear wheel arches. We're told that the rear window comes from a 900 Cabriolet's soft top and that the hatch is a modified panel sourced from a standard 900, though pictures of the back end haven't been released as of writing. Bonhams describes the build quality as "exceptional" and says that the panel gaps are better than those seen on many modern cars. It adds that the red and gray paint (which is a tribute to the combination often seen on the 900 SPG) is original and "in close to perfect condition."  The interior is largely standard 900 fare. There's wood trim, leather upholstery, a three-spoke steering wheel, and the big knobs and buttons that characterized Saab models for decades. The brand designed the switchgear so that it could be easily operated by someone wearing gloves. The odometer displays about 141,600 kilometers, which represents approximately 88,000 miles, though Bonhams pegs the engine's mileage at around 154,000 kilometers (roughly 95,600 miles). Most of the miles were reportedly added before engine ended up in the EX. Speaking of the engine, power comes from a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder sourced from Saab's regular-production parts bin and tuned to send 220 horsepower to the front wheels. It's bolted to a five-speed manual transmission.

Turkey buys rights to Saab 9-3 for domestic car

Mon, Oct 19 2015

Just in time for Halloween, a Saab is rising from the dead. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which controls the Swedish automaker, is selling the intellectual property rights for the second-generation 9-3 to the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). This government-supported agency intends to turn the sedan into the "Turkish National Car," according to NEVS. Using the aging 9-3 as a backbone, Turkey intends to strengthen the nation's auto industry by producing an extended-range electric vehicle by 2020, Daily Sabah reports. The goal is for 85-90 percent of the components to come from the country. "From design to production, Turkey will be the center for all parts and processes regarding the first domestically produced car," Interim Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik said to Daily Sabah. TUBITAK considered developing its own vehicle from scratch but calculated at least $1 billion in costs. Without going into specific detail, Isik said that buying the rights to the existing Saab turned out to be a better option. Despite having sold the 9-3 IP, NEVS is signing on to help with a business plan and to create the necessary supply and distribution chains for the EV. NEVS previously tried to revive the 9-3 itself by briefly continuing production and attempting to launch an electric version. Earlier this year, it partnered with Dongfeng to develop green vehicles. The company has been beset with financial problems, embroiled in a seemingly interminable post-bankruptcy reorganization progress. NEVS has been chosen by TUBITAK as its partner for developing a Turkish National Car TUBITAK, (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) which has been assigned to develop "Turkish National Car" and realize this important mission, has chosen National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, Nevs, as the industrial partner for the project. The cooperation has started in June 2015 between Nevs and TUBITAK and future industrial synergies in terms of development and manufacturing shall be generated with this cooperation. In the short term perspective this cooperation shall put Nevs' assets to work and shall give Turkey quick access to extensive automotive knowledge and experience. Nevs shall also provide its know-how in the developing of the business plan and establishing of the supply and distribution chains to TUBITAK.

Grainy leaked images show stillborn Castriota-designed Saab 9-3

Mon, 04 Feb 2013

The Saab faithful are going to be playing the "what if" game for years to come. It's one of the burdens of being a fan of a dead brand. A fresh batch of grainy 9-3 Phoenix images have made their way online, alleged shots of a design proposal penned by none other than Jason Castriota. The five-door looks to feature an honest liftback, though SaabsUnited.com says this particular vehicle was drawn up as part of a business plan in early 2011. As such, Castriota apparently told the site the final product was to look much more athletic than what we see here. While the low-resolution images make it difficult to tell much about the design, we certainly appreciate the familiar roofline, full band taillamps and the contrasting rear spoiler reminiscent of the old Saab 99 and 900 ducktails.
Unfortunately, we know all too well why this creation never saw the light of day. Would-be savior Victor Muller couldn't quite pull Saab out of its nosedive, and the company fell into bankruptcy before the 9-3 Phoenix could get off the ground. There's talk of the Phoenix platform and Saab brand having new life in other markets as EVs and even as gas cars, but the model seen here will likely never see production - let alone North American showrooms.
