Rolls-Royce rolls out specials at Dubai show

True to style, Rolls-Royce arrived at the Dubai Motor Show this year with some new special-edition wheels. Leading the charge was the Golf Edition of the Ghost. Ordered up specially by the local importer, the Golf edition "takes its inspiration from the fairways to appeal to discerning sportsmen, incorporating design cues and materials that evoke the history of this gentleman's sport." What that translates to in practical terms (as if a Rolls-Royce could ever be considered "practical") is a two-tone paint job of dark green and beige and a three-tone interior treatment of light cream, dark green, and deep red. The cabin is also augmented by the requisite starlight headliner, custom picnic tables, and lambswool floor mats. Tartan-lined door pockets, mahogany and persimmon wood veneers, and other special touches round out the unique treatment aimed at golf enthusiasts. The special Ghost was joined as well by the one-of-a-kind Tiger edition of the Phantom Coupe. This unique take on Goodwood's big two-door boasts a rather unsubtle paint scheme of dark and light orange, complimented by a tiger-motif coachline. Fortunately things are relatively more toned-down inside, with tan and beige leather and a proliferation of custom accents to conjure the large striped feline. The pair follow hot on the heels of the 1001 Nights edition of the Ghost that was introduced in the UAE mere weeks ago. Rolls also took the occasion to showcase the new Dawn convertible and the Wraith Inspired by Music edition at the Dubai show. Both are based on the same architecture, the former with a fabric top and the latter – revealed this past summer – with a fixed roof and trim drawn from the recording industry. The rebooted Top Gear revealed its full slate of new co-hosts last week, complete with a lineup of names and faces we know – and one we don't. That's Rory Reid, the one new host chosen from public auditions. Though most of us many never have seen his face or heard his voice, he's not new to reviewing cars on video. In addition to hosting automotive videos for CNET and Sky television, Reid is also automotive editor for a British video series called Recombu. Most of the reviews he's done for the YouTube channel are pretty straightforward, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of whatever he's driving – from a Bentley Continental GT Speed or Range Rover Sport SVR to a Mini JCW or Peugeot 308 GTI. But when it came to the Rolls-Royce Ghost, Rory was evidently moved to take things in a different (and original) direction. Instead of simply describing the luxury sedan as most automotive journalists would, Reid rapped about it. The result is a pretty novel take on the usual car review, and no doubt helped him secure the spot on the revived BBC program alongside the likes of Chris Evans, Chris Harris, Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz, Matt LeBlanc, and of course the Stig. Ghost Coupe to be fastest Rolls-Royce ever

Autocar has snapped spy shots of a Rolls-Royce Ghost Coupe, and judging from proportions the car will be so long in front and raked in back that it would make Dick Tracy whistle. We'll get the true story on that at next year's Geneva Motor Show, which is when Autocar says it's due to be revealed, but what's less in question is this: with a 6.6-liter, 600-horsepower V12 and a tauter ride it will be the fastest Rolls-Royce ever.
Weight is estimated to drop by 200 kg compared to its sedan sibling, and its roofline to drop by up to nearly three inches. If the horsepower numbers are correct the shorter and lighter Ghost coupe, with a 69-hp bump over the sedan, will assuredly deliver the "considerably brisker" acceleration promised. Helping matters will be the lowered chassis, larger tires, "mildly sports-orientated" brakes and a suspension tuned to be more aggressive but delivering just as much waftability.
Although it's being called the Ghost Coupe for now, insiders have suggested to the magazine that that it will get its own, bespoke, name, with pricing above the standard sedan but below the extended-wheelbase sedan.
