2017 Rolls-Royce Model Year Preview and Updates

It's a modest year of change at Rolls-Royce. In fact, the most significant news is the discontinuation of the Phantom VII, while the world (OK, the top 1% of the world) awaits its replacement, with a scheduled debut in 2018. Even with a year of modest updates, Rolls-Royce customers and patrons needn't, as the company's CEO put it, be 'seduced by mass-luxury brands'. DAWN/WRAITH: The convertible and coupe variants of the Ghost platform receive modest updates to trim and available options. Rolls-Royce also introduces a Black Badge variant, targeting – in R-R speak – the 'darker, more assertive, confident and demanding aesthetic of a new ... Rolls-Royce customer'. GHOST: Rolls-Royce's Bespoke service, long a staple among Phantom enthusiasts, has worked its way down the food chain to Ghost prospects. To reluctantly paraphrase Burger King: Have it your way! PHANTOM: As Rolls-Royce prepared for an end-of-the-year build-out of its Phantom, the company built a total of 50 Zenith Edition Coupes and Drophead Coupes, as well as enough sedans to bridge the gap between the Phantom VII's end of production and its 2018 model year launch of its replacement.

Rolls-Royce will not be bringing the Cullinan SUV to the Geneva Motor Show, but it is instead displaying four special takes on its existing portfolio. The most striking of these is the Rolls-Royce Dawn Aero Cowling. The titular leather-lined cowling made of carbon fiber and aluminum covers the Dawn's rear seats, effectively giving it the appearance of a two-seater, and is fitted with storage compartments. Rolls-Royce claims it is very light, but then the 570-horsepower V12 convertible weighs more than 5,600 pounds, so even a heavier decking setup would really only strain the person lifting it. In addition to the Dawn, Rolls-Royce has brought three custom Phantoms. The most restrained one is called "The Gentleman's Tourer," which features a two-tone grey and silver bodywork and a dark interior. The concept harkens back to 1930s Continental Saloons. The second one, a long-wheelbase Phantom, is called "The Whispered Muse," and it has the Dashboard Gallery option, featuring a silk motif. Rose Gold appears throughout the vehicle, including the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament — the first one finished in Rose Gold. The last Phantom, also a long wheelbase, is called "A Moment in Time," and its blue paint is a newly created hue. The three cars show off the customization capabilities of Rolls-Royce's bespoke division, and reportedly almost every customer will special-order their Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce bestows Canton Glory Ghost upon Guangzhou

Wonder why Rolls-Royce makes so many special editions for the Chinese market? Probably because China is fast becoming its largest market, with the dealerships in Beijing and Shanghai regularly proving able to move more high-end metal than any other Rolls dealer in the world. Little wonder then that, less than two months after releasing the Golden Sunbird edition, Rolls-Royce Bespoke is back again with another special Ghost just for China.
This time it's called the Canton Glory edition. It was introduced recently at Auto Guangzhou, and pays tribute to the Canton Tower in the same city. Two examples were made with a two-tone color scheme contrasting burgundy with either a blueish silver or white. Other features include Guangzhou's Five Rams emblem in the coachline, veneer panels, headrests and dashboard.
We don't doubt Rolls will find (or probably already has found) a pair of Chinese industrialists to gladly take these special editions home. But for those looking for their own unique touches, the British automaker has also brought its Bespoke Atelier to China for the first time, outlining the range of possibilities open to their moneyed customers.
