FCA looking into Ram-based SUV, midsize pickup

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is looking into manufacturing a large SUV based on the Ram 1500 pickup truck's current platform, reports USA Today. If built, the SUV would compete against the Chevrolet Tahoe and could even spawn a smaller pickup. Ram already has most of the bases covered with its current lineup, but a smaller pickup truck would allow it to enter the booming midsize pickup segment where it would compete with the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma along with the Chevy Colorado and GMC, which are the newest entries. Mike Manley, head of Fiat Chrysler's Jeep and Ram brands, told USA Today that the current platform found in the Ram 1500 could be utilized for a body-on-frame SUV. With a large SUV, FCA would be able to capitalize on the ever-growing SUV market and go toe-to-toe with General Motors (GM) and Ford. The next-generation of Ram pickup trucks is expected to go on sale in early 2018, which would put a large SUV close behind. In an attempt to increase the automaker's production capacity, FCA also plans to move Ram's current production facility from Warren to Sterling Heights, MI. With Jeep continually posting healthy numbers, it makes perfect sense for FCA to build more SUVs. 2016 Ram Laramie Limited is a comfy way to haul stuff in Chicago

Some people want a rugged truck with no frills that can get seriously banged up and muddy. If that's the case for you, you're definitely going to want to avoid the 2016 Ram Laramie Limited debuting as the latest flagship trim on the 1500, 2500 and 3500 models at the Chicago Auto Show. This pickup is for the buyer who still wants to haul stuff around but get the work done while sitting in the lap of luxury. Bystanders as far as the next county are going to have zero problems knowing the oncoming or outgoing driver has the top-level Ram. In a somewhat similar style to the updated look from the Ram Rebel, the word "RAM" appears in billboard-sized chrome letters across the center of the grille of the Laramie Limited. In case folks somehow miss it, the air inlets on either side are practically arrows pointing right to the middle. The rear gets the same motif with an emblem measuring some 20-inches wide. If all of that isn't enough to grab attention, there's also tons of eye-grabbing chrome from end to end. This is not a vehicle meant to blend in. Inside, passengers are cosseted in acres of black Natura Plus leather with Graystone piping and Black Argento wood trim. For a bit of contrast from all the darkness, there are also metallic accents in a color called Liquid Graphite. LED lighting sheds soft illumination throughout the cabin. Chrysler called out over lackluster Ram Runner by racer who helped develop it

Fans of off-roading and desert blasting might recall that Chrysler offers an aftermarket conversion that can turn a Ram 1500 into a road-legal desert racer, called the Ram Runner. The kit, sold through Mopar, includes some significant suspension upgrades, body tweaks and a brawnier cat-back exhaust for the truck's 5.7-liter V8.
Considering all of this, comparisons with the almighty Ford F-150 SVT Raptor are common. Among the off-road community, that makes these two a sort of Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang for people that prefer driving on dirt. In the Race-Dezert forum, the discussion as to which truck was better was proceeding as normal - Ram fans said their piece and Ford fans said theirs. Then, a man named Kent Kroeker offered up his two cents.
See, Kroeker is a Baja racer, and the man that helped develop the Ram Runner. Despite his association with the truck, though, he had some less than kind words for Chrysler and the Ram Runner.
