REVIEWS Rating: 9
Porsche combines traits of its iconic 911 Carrera and its more affordable Boxster in the new Cayman,
which is priced between the two.
  • Porsche-precise handling
  • More than one trunk area
  • Looks of a Porsche 911 at a lower price
Cons:
  • It's a hardtop with no sunroof available
  • Views out aren't the best, due to low ride height

Porsche aficionados don't have to shell out upwards of $71,000 anymore to buy a new Porsche coupe.

The Porsche Cayman mixes outer styling cues of the pricey 911 Carrera with the underpinnings and engines of Porsche's lowest-priced car, the Boxster roadster—all for a starting price of around $50,000.

But the two-seat Cayman, introduced in the 2006 model year, is more than a merger of vehicles. It's authentic in its Porsche-precise steering and handling.

For example, it felt as if all I had to do was glance at the point on the road where I wanted the Cayman to be, and the car moved there, almost instinctively. The steering was that quick to respond.

All I had to do was touch the brake pedal in the Cayman S and braking started. There was no waiting to feel the car slowing until the pedal went closer to the floor as you experience in lesser cars.

The Cayman also can satisfy drivers with its ready power, especially in the S version, where a Boxster six cylinder is updated and enlarged to deliver nearly 300 horsepower and what can feel like amazingly strong torque.

Helping the spirited ride is the Cayman's weight, which at less than 3,000 pounds is lighter than either the Boxster or the 911 Carrera. And the quick 5.1 seconds it takes the Cayman S with six-speed manual to go from 0 to 60 miles an hour is just 0.3 second less than that of the base 911 Carrera.

Perhaps this helps explain why the Cayman is being viewed as a jewel.

The hottest modern sports cars rendered as rally racers

Thu, Jan 14 2016

The modern-day World Rally Championship a monumental amount of fun to watch – I should know, as I recently was lucky enough to head to the UK to watch WRC Wales Rally GB – but even the most monstrous of the current WRC cars are based on fairly pedestrian European hatchbacks. Back in the heyday of rally, the Group B era in the 1980s, much hotter cars were the basis of even more incredible competition machines, for the most part. Take the exotic Ford RS200, or the Lancia Delta S4 with its twin-charged engine. And the hatchback-based Group B cars were bonkers, too. So what would some of our favorite modern cars look like if Group B had never ended? A British site named CarWow hired an artist to reimagine everything from the Rolls-Royce Wraith to the Porsche 911 as a retro-inspired rally car, and they were kind enough to let us share the results in the gallery above. The gallery features an Alfa Romeo Giulia in Martini livery, an Audi TT in classic Ur-Quattro colors, a Fiat 500 Abarth sporting massive flares and a hood blister full of auxiliary lights, a new Ford Mustang in RS200 livery, a Lancia Delta in Alitalia colors, a Porsche 911 in Rothmans livery, a Renault-Alpine in classic blue, a Rolls-Royce Wraith tribute to the Jules cologne Corniche Coupe, and a relatively modern-looking VW Touran. So far, the favorite around the office is the incredible Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is an homage to the wonderful 300 SEL 6.8 AMG "Red Pig" that essentially put AMG on the map. Check out the gallery above and see which one you like the best. Related Video:

Chris Harris condemns demonization of Porsche Carrera GT in wake of Walker death

Fri, 06 Dec 2013

When something bad happens, it's easy to resort to scapegoating. At least for some of us, that seems to be exactly what has happened following the tragic death of actor Paul Walker and racer Roger Rodas, who were killed on November 30 in a Porsche Carrera GT. Even though officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash, that isn't stopping many theories from being put for - theories that include blaming the Porsche supercar. Rather predictably, not only is the CGT's difficult nature getting examined, but indeed, the nature of all high-performance cars is being put under the public's microscope, with some wondering what the need for all the power is.
A Google search of "Porsche Carrera GT" will find no shortage of articles about the razor-sharp handling and outright speed of the CGT. Pistonheads' Chris Harris has a different, insightful take on both the Carrera GT and the nature of all fast cars. He reflects on the matter, ironically, en route to drive the successor to the car that killed Walker and Rodas, the 900-horsepower 918 Spyder hybrid supercar.
We think it's well worth a read, as it makes a number of good points about modern high-performance automobiles and the way they're used. Click over and take a look.

Porsche 911 Turbos, and the new Lotus Emira | Autoblog Podcast #686

Fri, Jul 9 2021

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Road Test Editor Zac Palmer. The two talk about their experiences in the 911 Turbo and Turbo S Cabriolet, then pivot to talking about the BMW M3 Competition on the Indiana Nurburgring. They follow that up by discussing driver assistance systems, given recent experience in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade with Super Cruise and Hyundai's Highway Drive Assist. After that, they get into some news, talking about the new Lotus Emira and Genesis G80 Sport. Finally, they wrap up with a rather interesting two-for-one "Spend my Money" edition where they help two listeners with different car buying conundrums.
