eGarage video features Helmuth Bott's personal Porsche 959 prototype

"We thought we were going to build a super-911," said Peter Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG of the development of the Porsche 959. That was before it started getting expensive. At that point, Helmuth Bott, Porsche R&D director got frightened. Costs ballooned because of the all-wheel drive, sequential turbocharging and other technology Porsche had never even thought about when it set out to build a 911 to compete in Group B. Schutz continued, "The amount of resources we were committing got totally out of hand." Instead of pulling the plug, Bott doubled down and drew on the strength of his brilliant team to build a car whose impact is still echoing aross the industry.
"It's probably one of our most prized possessions" says Don Leatherwood, Director of the Brumos collection where Dr. Bott's personal prototype resides, and where Frazer Spowart went to see the car and create a video for eGarage. Porsche planning something track-focused for Geneva [w/poll]

At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month, Porsche has confirmed that it will be showcasing two potentially exciting new models: One is the new Cayman GT4 we've already seen, but we don't know what the other will be just yet. All the German automaker is saying at the moment is that, "the second new model is another exceptional Porsche that sets new standards on the racetrack" and that "this vehicle confirms the sports car manufacturer's commitment to high performance sports cars that manage a very special link between everyday driving and motorsports." Given those two statements, we can probably rule out a crossover or sedan at one end of the spectrum or a purely competition-spec racer at the other. The likelihood is, then, that Porsche's surprise for Geneva will be the new 911 GT3 RS. But then it could be the Boxster-based convertible counterpart to the Cayman GT4 (whether dubbed Boxster GT4, Boxster Spyder or something else), or even a track-tuned version of the 918 Spyder to take on the McLaren P1 GTR and Ferrari FXX K. The new Cayman GT4 is the first high-performance sports car belonging to the GT family that is based on the mid-engine coupes. The second new model is another exceptional Porsche that sets new standards on the racetrack. These two premieres continue Porsche's tradition of presenting motorsport highlights at the spring car show on the shores of Lake Geneva. The 911 GT3, 918 Spyder and 919 Hybrid all celebrated their debuts in Geneva in recent years.

Leno buys classic Porsche 356 Carrera 2, seeks out and finds perfect expert for help

The world of collector cars is fairly tight-knit when you get down to individual models. Need proof? Just take a look at this latest video from Jay Leno's Garage. The subject is a gorgeous 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2. Jay, being known as quite a collector, got a call from someone looking to sell. While doing his due diligence and looking for a 356 expert to go over the car with him, he came across John Willhoit.
Where the story gets weird is when Leno is asked the license plate number - it turns out that Willhoit, owner of Willhoit Restorations, had restored the exact same car more than 30 years prior. He then sold it to the same person that was looking to give it to Leno. What follows is a truly interesting video on the little quirks of the 356, along with Willhoit's personal history on a car he hadn't seen since 1976.
