The 2009 Porsche Cayenne is offered in five different models--the base V6, the S, the GTS, the Turbo and the Turbo S--each offered with a different powertrain. A 290-horsepower, 3.6L V6 comes with the base model, paired with either a standard six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The S utilizes a 385-horsepower, 4.8L V8, and is available only with Tiptronic S transmission. The GTS squeezes 405 horsepower from the 4.8, with the six-speed manual as standard and Tiptronic S available. The Turbo and Turbo S make use of the 4.8 as well, but it's fed by twin turbochargers. The Turbo's engine makes 500 horsepower, while the Turbo S churns out 550. All Cayenne engines feature direct injection for improvements in both fuel efficiency and power. All V8 models adopt VarioCam Plus variable valve timing, which varies intake valve timing and lift, and a new variable oil pump for the dry-sump lubrication system that is oriented toward high-performance driving. The five-passenger Cayenne offers two spacious rows of seating; the rear seat is split 60/40 and can fold flat to expand the cargo floor for larger items. The Cayenne adapts to changing road conditions using Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDDC), which utilizes hydraulic pressure to change the stabilizer-bar response depending on the road surface or cornering forces. The system allows both a smooth ride when on or off-road.All Cayenne models get large disc brakes with six-piston calipers in front and four-piston units in back. Turbo S models benefit from especially grippy ceramic composite brakes. The Porsche Stability Management system--including a trailer stability control mode--is standard across the line, as is a power liftgate and "Sport" mode, which changes the engine mapping when engaged for improved throttle response. When properly equipped, the Cayenne can tow over 7,700 pounds. The options list for the Cayenne is vast, including everything from an off-road package with skid plates to a trailer-towing package, luxury features such as a heated steering wheel and various distinctive woodgrain interior trims. Base V6 models get 17-inch alloy wheels, while S models upgrade to larger 18-inch wheels. Several different wheel designs are optional, ranging up to flashy 21-inchers, which are standard on Turbo S models.

Porsche planning jacked-up 911 Safari? [w/poll]
Thu, 26 Dec 2013The Porsche 911 may, for some, be the quintessential sportscar. And that typically means keeping it on paved roads and racing circuits. But there's a proud history to taking the Elfen off-road that traces back to specially-prepared 911s (like the one pictured above) which Porsche fielded in rallies in the late '70s and early '80s. And now Porsche is reportedly preparing to tap back into that history with a new off-road 911 model, according to the Auto Bild Motor Revue.
Tipped to be called the 911 Safari, the special variant would be based on the Carrera 4 but upgrade with bigger tires fitted to a beefed-up suspension with higher ground clearance and underbody skid plates. The model is expected to be presented initially as a concept at the Beijing Motor Show next April. But if enough interest is expressed - particularly from buyers in developing markets where the roads might not be as smooth as those to which North American and European drivers have become accustomed - Stuttgart could put it into production in 2016, when the current 991 is expected to get a mid-cycle refresh.

Porsche inspecting 2,500 Euro-spec Macans for damaged brake boosters
Thu, 29 May 2014Porsche is investigating a potential brake issue with 2,500 of its new Macan CUVs. The inspection focuses on the state of the brake systems following tests that discovered the brake boosters may have been damaged during assembly.
Porsche has pointed out that, despite the concern, the affected Macans still meet safety regulations. The issue is predominantly found in European-spec Macans, which according to Porsche, have been delivered to consumers. Owners of affected vehicles in Europe will be notified and asked to come in for a brief, no-cost inspection.
American consumers, though, have no reason to worry. We reached out to Porsche Cars North America, who confirmed that the vehicles in question were assembled before US-spec cars were screwed together.
Chris Harris hits the track with the Porsche Cayman GT4
Wed, Mar 11 2015The Porsche Cayman GT4 offers the first legitimate chance for Porsche's more compact coupe to really step out of the long shadow of its brother the 911. By placing the 385-horsepower Carrera S engine into the center of a Cayman and sweetening the package with a ton of truly high performance parts, the model can now really show off. The ever-enthusiastic Chris Harris puts on quite a display behind the wheel of the German brand's latest hardcore creation. As is his wont, Harris slides the GT4 all over the Portimao circuit with little wisps of smoke wafting up from its rear Michelin tires. However, what he gets really excited about is Porsche's decision to fit a real manual gearbox, rather than the PDKs rapidly taking over the company's highest performance vehicles. For anyone who loves seeing a sports car's oily bits, stay tuned all the way through because after hooning around for awhile, Harris puts the model up on a lift to find out what's so special. Porsche touts the GT4's 911 GT3-derivied front suspension, but this really shows just how many mechanical adjustments it offers the demanding driver. Related Video:
