2002 Porsche Boxster Roadster S Convertible 2-door 3.2l Bad Engine on 2040-cars
Lakeland, Florida, United States
My beautiful little 2002 Porsche Boxster S recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure. I cannot afford to replace the engine. NOTE: I do NOT race the car... The engine failed going 20 MPH due to a failed intermediate shifty bearing. Google 'Porsche engine failure' and learn all about 2001 - 2005 failed Porsche engines. Porsche will not replace the engine because the car is 12 years old, thus past the 10 year cut-off.
I am offering the car for sale 'AS IS' in the hopes someone may be in a better position than I to replace the engine or have another purpose for it such as tracing or electric conversion O.K. here is the GOOD, the BAD & the UGLY: The GOOD: I am the second owner. I have owned it, pampered & babied it for over 10 years. It has been garage kept since new and has only 58k miles. At 50k miles I replaced all 4 shock struts with new Bilstein's (Big $$), installed left & right new genuine Porsche axles & wheel bearings, 4 new Brembo brake rotors, new brake pads (more big $$). Two months prior to the engine failure I left a window open and it rained allowing the computer under the drivers seat to get wet. Bert Smith Porsche (St. Petersburg) dried & shampooed the carpet and did a full diagnostic resulting in installation of a new security system computer (under seat), new OBD computer, new exhaust O2 sensors, new left window riser, new ignition switch & new cam timing sensor. The bill was $7500.00 but it drove better than new... until the engine failed! To my knowledge the car has never been involved in an accident. It drives like a dream - as a Porsche should. The body is straight with no parking dings, etc. Interior is in very good condition. The A/C - climate control is excellent. Lots of Porsche Tequipment dark burl maple wood & leather trim (more big $$). See pix. This car has dealer take-off Carrera 19" alloy wheels with NEW genuine Porsche color crest center caps and Bridgestone Potenza tires in excellent condition with minimal wear (lots of big $$). I'll update this post with the tire sizes shortly. It has a B & M Short Throw Shifter (More big $$) installed and shifts waaaay better than the standard shifter. Genuine Porsche Litronic headlights (dealer installed (do not move with suspension as factory installed units) work excellent (huge $$). The original ugly orange side markers & tail lights have been replaced with grey 2003 units for a much improved appearance. The engine has a custom exhaust - aftermarket stainless steel exhaust headers, pipes & high performance catalytic converters (the system eliminates 2 of the 4 catalytic converters) the factory S muffler is retained. The factory convertible top with plastic window was replaced two years ago with a Robbins top with heated glass window. Everything on the car works as it should except the the items listed below (See 'The BAD'). Yes, you guessed it... MEGA bucks spent on this car, only to have the engine self destruct at 58k miles! The BAD: There are a few paint chips on front & rear bumpers. I was going to have bumpers repainted. No need now! The OEM radio does not work good (works - but the display doesn't light up). I was going to have a Kenwood system installed. Guess I don't have to now! The turn signals will not self-cancel after turning. That;s about all the bad stuff i can think of. The UGLY: Engine is damaged internally requiring rebuild with new cases or new engine. This is an awesome Porsche, faster & better handling than it was when new - just needs a new engine! Feel free to ask questions, request additional photos or inspect it (by appointment). It may be seen in my aircraft hangar on Lakeland Linder Regional Airport. No test drives (HA HA) Buyer must arrange shipping, trailering, towing, etc. at own expense. On Jul-03-14 at 12:40:52 PDT, seller added the following information: Typo corrections: Engine failure due to failed intermediate SHAFT bearing failure, Not 'shifty' bearing! |

Another naked Porsche 911 GT3 RS caught in Stuttgart parking garage
Tue, Jan 6 2015With its reveal not expected until the Geneva Motor Show in April, we have to wonder why there'd be a rode-hard-put-away-wet 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS sitting out in the open, completely uncovered. It's one thing to be caught out on the street or in triplicate at a Swedish gas station, but it's another thing to be on what looks like daily driving duty – there's a child's seat in the passenger's throne. Instagram user Johan9ff snagged it, and in response to a query in German as to how, he answered in German (per Google Translate) that he found it in a parking garage in a fitness center in the Stuttgart suburb of Killesberg. Based on its muddy front lip and bug-spattered paint job, the coupe has been naked out on the street and traveling quickly. Out of its camouflage it looks just like we've been led to expect based on the patent photos and the recent winter spy shots, but this time we get an up-close view of the vents over the front wheels. We have one word to say about them: filthy. And if you're wondering about those turbo-like vents on the rear haunches, no, this isn't a GT2 – Porsche has said there won't be a GT2, the current race-certified GT3 RSR has those vents (occasionally found on the previous version as well), and the GT3 RS has already been leaked in scale-model form. This is it. Based on comments left on Porsche forums, production will be limited by the number of orders – the new engine won't meet European regulations coming into force, so it won't be manufactured after this year. Deliveries are said to start at the beginning of summer; those who bought the 918 Spyder will get first dibs, and you can be certain there won't be enough of these to go around. Speaking of that engine, it's said to be good for somewhere between 510 to 525 horsepower, a PDK transmission getting power to staggered wheels, 20-inchers in front, 21-inchers in the back. Johan9ff has slowly been posting Instagram photos of the beast, we're hoping he got at least one of the interior. Those seats looks mega. Bring on Geneva. Remembering Porsche's illustrious Le Mans history
Fri, 13 Jun 2014Not only does this weekend mark the running of the 82nd 24 Hours of Le Mans, it will also see the return of one of the race's most venerable brands to the top tiers of endurance racing. Porsche will campaign its first top-flight car since the 1998 911 GT1-98, the 919 Hybrid, at this weekend's race, in the hopes of knocking off its corporate rival, the dominant Audi team.
To understand just what a win for the 919 would mean, though, you need to look back on the intrinsic connection between the Circuit de la Sarthe and Porsche. It's a history that spans decades, dating back to the team's first win in 1970.
XCar has a great video on that history. At 25 minutes, it's a bit on the long side. Then again it is the Friday before Le Mans. Take a look below for the video.
VW Group to split brands under four holding companies
Tue, Jun 16 2015The Volkswagen Group is planning a tremendous shift in its internal structure that will decentralize operations by splitting its 12 brands into four different holding companies. Here's the breakdown. Things will be split logically, considering the inter-sharing of parts, platforms, and engines. The Volkswagen brand, Seat, and Skoda make up a passenger vehicle division led by former BMW man Herbert Diess. Audi, which is tightly intertwined with Lamborghini and motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, will be managed by current Audi exec Rupert Stadler. Porsche and Bentley, which are already quite close, will be joined by Bugatti and run by Matthias Mueller. Finally, a commercial vehicles division will include Volkswagen Commercial, Scania, and Man. Former Daimler exec Andreas Renschler will take care of the big vehicles. The massive move, according to Automotive News Europe, is part of an internal VAG effort to move away from the structure established by ousted Chairman Ferdinand Piech, who favored a compact, but highly centralized, management structure to oversee the independent actions of the company's brands. Criticism of Piech's arrangement stemmed from the company's slow responses to changes in the market, ANE reports. The new structure should make for a more efficient, streamlined company that's better able to make crucial decisions. What are your thoughts? Should VAG decentralize, or did Piech have the right idea? Have your say in Comments.
