For sale, rare 1988 Porsche 944 "Celebration Edition" model. There were only 250 of these made and shipped to the United States in this color. Unfortunately, I did not realize how special it was until after I replaced the worn interior, one of the things that made it so unique. I will include the "celebration edition" driver and passenger seats which could be sold for a nice profit to collectors who are restoring their cars. The engine runs great. It's been well maintained with regular oil changes. The following repairs have been made in the last 18 months: new starter, new master and slave clutch cylinders, new rear rotors, new brake pads, new thermostat, new cylinder head and head gasket, new fuel lines, new fuel pump, new timing belt, new alternator & balance shaft belts, new radiator and expansion tank, new gas tank, new right front tie rod.  It also has relatively new tires on it. One thing the new owner will want to take care of is the replacement of one of the fuel injectors. I understand the part runs about $130 and should not require much labor in replacing it. Additionally, there is also a power steering leak I've not had a chance to troubleshoot. The exterior and interior door mechanisms need repair/replacement. Replacement parts are available and can be installed relatively easy. The AC does not work.  The power mirrors, odometer and power sunroof do not work.  The motorized head lights work partially and may only require adjustment.  I've had them in the manual mode and left in the raised position.  Overall the body and paint are in fair to good condition. There is cracking and significant peeling on the hood and a few dents on the front end. I recently replaced the center part of the front end which contains the emblem.  The interior is in pretty good shape, pictures of the interior to follow in the next day or so.  Judging from the title , the car was in an accident and the insurance company wrote it off in December 2008.  The car seems very sound and drives/handles great! The title is up to date. After spending thousands on the engine, the new owner should not have much to contend with going forward.

Porsche stalls on Ferrari 458 rival

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

A few years ago, reports surfaced that Porsche was planning a new supercar. But the latest intel suggests that the plan has been put indefinitely on the back burner.
The project alternately referred to as 960 or 988 was put forth by CEO Matthias Müller shortly after he assumed control of the German automaker. It called for a mid-engined V8 supercar to slot in between the 911 and the 918 Spyder to take on the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren 650S and sister-company Lamborghini's Gallardo and subsequent Huracán.
Now three years since the idea was first mooted, the vehicle has yet to materialize. According to Autocar, Porsche is putting a greater emphasis on refreshing its existing lineup. Which is probably just as well, because the mid-engined supercar would have a heck of a challenge on its hands to differentiate itself in terms of performance from the 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo, which already give the 458 and company a run for their money.

The Bearable Lightness Of Being
Start with a standard Porsche 911 Carrera and its 350-horsepower, 3.6-liter flat six-cylinder engine. Bore a crepe-thin slice of aluminum from each cylinder to get to 3.8 liters, add a wider track out back and two extra exhaust pipes and voila, you can append an S to the Carrera's name. Hang two sets of wet, multi-disc clutches along its spine and you can make that a 4, or a 4S. Bolt on two forced-induction compressors and piping, add two fender vents and comically wide rear tires and you've redeemed your ticket to a Turbo. Increase the boost pressure and swell the corral to 560 horses and you have the Turbo S, which is the Virginia Slims of the 911 line-up because it's come a long way, baby.
Or you can go in a different direction. At that second stop, grab the 3.8-liter and cart it over to the engineers at Porsche's development center in Weissach, Germany. If racing were meat, they would be among the alpha carnivores. The baseboards in their homes are probably painted with miniature billboards for motor oil and vintage cigarettes along the straights, red-and-white stripes around every corner.

Jack Olsen built a Porsche 911 to drive every day and conquer Willow Springs

Mon, Dec 15 2014

Almost two years ago we wrote about the 12-Gauge Garage Jack Olsen built to house his multifarious Porsche 911 - its 1972 bodywork hides four decades of Porsche parts, like the transaxle from a 1977 911 and the engine from 1995 911, for example. It weighs 2,400 pounds and has 272 horsepower, and Olsen uses it daily driving and for track days, the latter excursions featuring homemade, bolt-on aero parts. German magazine Auto Bild stopped by Olsen's house to look in on the Porsche called "Black Beauty II," and we get a few more details about the mods he's made, like swapping out for fiberglass body panels and welding Fuchs wheel centers to wider Corvette barrels so he could run different tires. Most importantly, though, Olsen divulges his passion for lowering his lap time at Willow Springs. Randy Pobst set the lap record for a production car around the 2.5-mile Big Willow track in a Porsche 918 Spyder at 1:23.54 during a Motor Trend test (the outright record, according to Willow Springs, is held by Michael Andretti at 1:06.050 in a CART car). Further down the list, Steve Millen drove a 415-hp 911 GT3 RS around the same track in 1:33.14 - a car 600 pounds heavier than Olsen's. Over the past 14 years of tinkering with his car, Olsen says his data shows his lap time is now down to 1:26.88, achieved on the day of filming the Auto Bild video. That time would put him in between the 1:26 flat posted by Dominik Farnbacher in a 608-hp Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR and the 1:28.93 put up by Pobst in a 400-hp, 991-series 911. You can hear Olsen tell it in his own words in the video.
