1989 944 Turbo S (951) - Red With White Interior - Very Good Condition on 2040-cars

Year:1989 Mileage:113198
Location:

San Jose, California, United States

San Jose, California, United States

1989 Porsche 951 (944 Turbo) in very good condition.  113K miles.  Runs great.  I have owned it for the last 19 years and never raced it.  I'm the 3rd owner, and the car has always been in California

All original except for the following and regular maintenance items:
1.  Computer chips replaced with AutoThority chips to increase engine power.  This was done prior to my purchasing the car 19 years ago.  I have the original chips and will include them.
2.  Blaupunkt cassette/radio replaced with Blaupunkt CD/radio.  I have the original and will include it.

Major Mechanical Repairs:
1.  The only one I can think of is the clutch, which has been replaced twice.

Collision Damage:

1.  A truck backed into the drivers side while the vehicle was parked which damaged the door and front fender.  Both were repaired and repainted.

Major Defects:
1.  The drivers seat has a tear and is worn.  This is shown in one of the photographs.
2.  The air conditioner does not work.  However, I believe that it is mechanically fine and needs to have the Freon recharged.  Because this has the original air conditioning system, it uses R12 with has been phased out.  I chose to not recharge it some number of years ago because of the high price and the good weather here in northern California.

Minor Defects:
1.  The speaker in the driver's door stops working every once in a while.  There is an intermittent connection somewhere, but I have not been able to find it.

Included Extras:
1.  Saratoga glass top.  The top works fine but is in need of repainting the aluminum trim, and replacing the weather stripping.  This is shown in the photographs.
2.  Useable mats.  These are shown in one of the photos.
3.  All maintenance records.
4.  Original computer chips and cassette/radio (see above).

Maintenance is up-to-date except for the timing belt, which is now due for replacement.  All maintenance and mechanical repairs have been done by a well regarded independent Porsche shop, CT Automotive.

1989 was the last year that the 944 Turbo was available in the U.S., and the 1989 model was the fastest.  It had many upgrades over the previous years.  These are explained in the photo of a sales brochure.

Jack Olsen built a Porsche 911 to drive every day and conquer Willow Springs

Mon, Dec 15 2014

Almost two years ago we wrote about the 12-Gauge Garage Jack Olsen built to house his multifarious Porsche 911 - its 1972 bodywork hides four decades of Porsche parts, like the transaxle from a 1977 911 and the engine from 1995 911, for example. It weighs 2,400 pounds and has 272 horsepower, and Olsen uses it daily driving and for track days, the latter excursions featuring homemade, bolt-on aero parts. German magazine Auto Bild stopped by Olsen's house to look in on the Porsche called "Black Beauty II," and we get a few more details about the mods he's made, like swapping out for fiberglass body panels and welding Fuchs wheel centers to wider Corvette barrels so he could run different tires. Most importantly, though, Olsen divulges his passion for lowering his lap time at Willow Springs. Randy Pobst set the lap record for a production car around the 2.5-mile Big Willow track in a Porsche 918 Spyder at 1:23.54 during a Motor Trend test (the outright record, according to Willow Springs, is held by Michael Andretti at 1:06.050 in a CART car). Further down the list, Steve Millen drove a 415-hp 911 GT3 RS around the same track in 1:33.14 - a car 600 pounds heavier than Olsen's. Over the past 14 years of tinkering with his car, Olsen says his data shows his lap time is now down to 1:26.88, achieved on the day of filming the Auto Bild video. That time would put him in between the 1:26 flat posted by Dominik Farnbacher in a 608-hp Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR and the 1:28.93 put up by Pobst in a 400-hp, 991-series 911. You can hear Olsen tell it in his own words in the video.

Auto journalist ordered to pay big money for blowing up Porsche 917 engine [UPDATE]

Tue, 22 Jan 2013

Racecars blow engines all the time, but a Porsche 917 isn't just a run-of-the-mill racecar. British automotive writer Mark Hales reportedly borrowed a 917 from 82-year-old former Formula One racer David Piper for a magazine article, and mechanical tragedy ensued. Nobody is arguing that the engine failed after being spun to 8,200 rpm. However, Hales was warned not to exceed 7,000 rpm, says owner Piper, and the affair landed in English courts with Piper seeking £50,000 - over $79,000 US - in reimbursement funds for an engine rebuild and loss of use of the car while it was being repaired. Judge Simon Brown ruled in favor of car owner Piper, putting Hales on the hook for £110,000 ($174,000) including legal fees - a whole lot of money in any language.
Hales says the Porsche suffered a mechanical fault while lapping that allowed it to slip out of gear and over-rev. Piper wasn't convinced, and sought to have the repair paid for by the guy who broke the racer, saying "If you bend it, you mend it." It's not like Hales is a novice driver, having seat time in both professional and amateur races over 30 years, notching about 150 wins, but even the best drivers sometimes miss a shift, and that's what Piper contended happened to his car.
According to reports, Hales has had to sell most of his valuables to pay his lawyers and is now facing bankruptcy with the ruling against him. Members of the Pistonheads website are trying to coordinate a collection to help him out, as well.

A few pre-race notes and a lot of photos from the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Sat, 14 Jun 2014

The 82nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is on.
Audi has won 12 of the last 15 events, the scion of Auto Union is trying to make it 13 this year. To do so, it will have to overcome a situation faced only three other times during its dominance of La Sarthe: underdog status. Toyota has won the first two races of the year and claimed pole for this race, the rumor being that this year it's Toyota's race to lose.
And then there's Porsche. It's been 16 years since the Stuttgart brand raced on the top rung at Le Mans, three years years since it announced its return, just a year since it acquired Mark Webber in a signing that wasn't subtle and a few months since we got eyes on the 919 Hybrid.
