Porsche 914 1972, With Chevy Ls-1 V8 on 2040-cars
Traverse City, Michigan, United States
This is a '72 914 that I have built over the last four years to be a fun, daily driver/sleeper that will not attract too much attention, but will pull like a freight train when prodded. I have owned 914's back to 1983, seven total, and this is by far the most solid one. A life-long Calif. car, till shipped to Mich. for the conversion, it never had undercoat, so the original paint is visible on the pan. There is no rust in the floor, or rocker/long areas. Battery tray was removed, and located in the front trunk for weight balancing, and a simplified engine bay. The car was block sanded, and painted in base/clear Silver, to match original. Door shell interiors, and under floor pan were given coats of Waxoyl, a British sealer treatment to keep her rust free. The goal was to have a car I could hop in, have start instantly, and drive in whatever weather happened without worrying about her. Fuel tank was perfect, was cleaned, and sealed inside with an epoxy tank treatment. Rubber fuel lines are now braided stainless -6 lines. Windshield and rear glass were pulled for body work, and replaced by a pro, so no leaks. All lights and signals work, as do the emergency brake. Most of the cars rubber has been replaced with new, from 914 Rubber. All brake calipers are new in last four years, with new Mintax pads. New 19mm master cylinder upgrade, new 930 Turbo tie rods installed. Koni adj. shocks on rear, with 200 lb. springs, and Koni front inserts. Interior has new Perlon carpet set installed, and new dask cap. Seats are near perfect, as is the full interior. New, hi-output fuel pump, and Corvette filter, tank return installed. New brake fluid installed this May, and rear pad vent distance set. Three extra gauges installed in place of radio: oil pre., coolant temp, and voltmeter. The car has the Renegade aluminum radiator/fan set up, and runs under 180 deg. at all times. Aluminum tubing carries the coolant under the car to the rad. Pedal's have been rebuilt with bronze bushings, new clutch cable, Optima battery with billet battery hold down in front trunk. Mileage is correct, and odometer has been converted for the tire size, and gearing. Transaxle is a Renegade 4 speed conversion, with flipped tall gears in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, and was sent to Carlos at Bluesky for a full rebuild. Car has polished Fuch 4 bolt wheels, and a 5th with original spare mounted, (which has a lot of rash from curbing, but is functional). Tires are older Pirelli, but with full tread. Front and rear bumpers are fiberglass.
Engine is Chevy LS-1 from a '98 Camero, with original ECU gone thru to eliminate all un-needed stuff, wiring harness by Renegade Hybrides, as well as full LS install kit from Renegade ($3,000.) It starts instantly, runs quietly ,thru new pair of Walker Dynomax mufflers, but when you floor it, has gobs of torque, and is going 30 mph faster before you can react, even with the longer gearing. Cruising at 70mph is around 2700 rpm. At full throttle, the engine note is great, but no droning at cruise. This is a very nice clean driver; a few things remain to finish, and are: Tach is converted for 8 cyl, but need signal booster box wired in, (box included with car). Wipers have stopped working, but a complete wiper motor/assemble, also included. No heater or blower, due to the Chevy conversion, Renegade has kits for this, as well as air cond. if wanted. Some gear noise present in top gear despite full rebuild from Bluesky (build sheet, and receipts included with sale. I have a ton of hours in the car, and will answer any questions I can. call: 231-946-0724 Tom. Reserve is set low; once sold a paypal deposit of $500. must be sent within 24 hrs., and the balance paid via certified check or bank wire within 72 hrs. |

Porsche Cayenne GTS, base models revealed ahead of LA
Wed, 05 Nov 2014Porsche unveiled a slew of refreshed Cayennes just a few months ago, but the base model (right) and high-performance GTS trim (above) were conspicuously absent from that list. There's no more reason to wonder about them, though, because the German brand plans to unveil both at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19.
Sitting below the Turbo in the lineup, the latest GTS still offers plenty of performance. It drops the previous version's naturally aspirated V8 in favor of a tuned version of the twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 from the Cayenne S for some added oomph. The tweaks bring power up to 440 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to rocket the model to 62 miles per hour in an estimated 5.2 seconds. The bump also equates to 20 hp and 39 lb-ft more than the current S and more importantly 20 hp and 62 lb-ft more than the previous GTS, according to Porsche.
In addition to the extra muscle, Porsche also decks the GTS out with some added features. It comes with a standard sport exhaust and Porsche Active Suspension Management system with an air suspension lets the chassis sit about three-quarters of an inch lower (20 millimeters). To bring things to a halt, the high-performance models also takes its brakes from the Turbo model.
Porsche's Mauer recalls the history of the 918 Spyder, hints about next-gen 911
Wed, 26 Feb 2014The night before Porsche handed me the keys to its 2015 Macan to drive on both road and track, the company threw together a great dinner for the assembled media in Leipzig. Hosted in Porsche's spaceship-shaped customer delivery center in the eastern German town, I'll admit that I spent the bulk of my night grabbing hors d'oeuvres from passing waiters (they do a nice tuna sashimi), milling around a collection of historic and interesting vehicles on the top floor and gulping down Warsteiner.
In an era of mega car companies, the story of how the 918 came to be was really refreshing.
Before the evening was over, however, Porsche design chief Michael Mauer stopped by my table to exchange pleasantries and thank us all for coming out to drive the Macan. My fellow diners and I passed a pleasant half-hour or more picking the brain of the forthcoming Mauer, and somehow or another, the topic turned to Porsche's newest supercar, the 918 Spyder. In an era of mega car companies (the Volkswagen Group included) and massive development teams, the story of how the 918 came to be is really refreshing.
The 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S brings 50 extra ponies to Detroit
Mon, 14 Jan 2013Porsche has announced a new version of its popular SUV today at the Detroit Auto Show: the 550-horsepower 2014 Cayenne Turbo S.
This newly minted "flagship" of the Cayenne lineup is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 engine, and offers 50 hp more than the Cayenne Turbo. Performance figures are impressive for the sleek utility vehicle: 0-60 miles per hour can be dashed off in 4.3 seconds, while maximum speed is rated at 175 mph. The Turbo S also gets dynamic chassis control, torque vectoring and Porsche's Sport Chrono package - all standard equipment.
Visually the Cayenne Turbo S differentiates itself from the lesser models in pretty subtle ways. Gloss black trim decorates the gawping front air intakes, as well as rear-view mirror trim panel. The SUV also wears 21-inch Turbo II wheels, a la the 911 Turbo.
