and Volkswagen. Ferdinand Piech, the director of Porsche at the time, wanted to
create a car that young people could afford. Porsche designed the car and
Volkswagen would manufacture the bodies for a reasonable price. Most all of the 914 cars would be fitted with a VW 4cyl engine but all along the primary design of the car was for a Porsche 6cyl powered version. After VW constructed the bodies Porsche would then supply 911 6 cylinder
engines and complete the final assembly of the 914-6 versions in their factory
(VW would supply the drivetrain and finish construction of the 4cyl
version). The design of the 914 was unlike any other mass produced sports car ever,
this mid-engine car was closer to a race car design than any street car.
Initially the deal would be a win - win between the companies but management
changes in VW caused a price increase for the bodies delivered to Porsche. By
the time the 914-6 was available for sale by Porsche dealers it was only $300
less than the same year 911T, this killed sales numbers. On top of the high price the marketing department forced a lower power older model engine than the 911 would get in order to further separate the performance differences, with only 110
horsepower this engine was the lowest power of any 6 cylinder ever built by
Porsche. One can look back on the 914-6 as a very well designed car that was horribly equipped.
Eventually there would be well over 118,000 4 cylinder 914s built which was a
major success, but only around 3,300 of the Porsche 914-6 cars were ever built
over their 3 year run. The 914-6GT variant would go on to prove itself as a race
worthy contender as it won the the GT class of the 1970 Le Mans race and a
large number of events after that. The 914-6 is universally known as a very
rare serious Porsche car, Porsche
intended to develop the car further through their 916 program which included a
190HP 2.4L 911S engine and a specially designed 915 transmission, only 11 of
these cars were built before the program was canceled. Sadly it was the very
slow sales of the street car that completely killed the -6 model. For some time
used 914-6 cars could be bought by racers for very low cost and could be simply
converted to a full race car in a weekend, these budget racers won all the club
races in their day. Today there are almost no original, unmodified, matching
number 914-6 examples left. This particular car is an investment grade matching numbers
car in outstanding condition. Truly this car is one of the best examples you
could find out of the few remaining original 914-6 cars left. These cars are set to appreciate in value immensely due to their limited production run, few remaining survivors, a model that is know about by all Porsche aficionados, and it is such a great driving car. This one is #1800
made out of 3300 total production, build date of April 1970. Sold new in January
1971 by Anderson Behel of Santa Clara California and it is still wearing both
of its original blue California license plates and chrome plate frame from the
selling dealer! The original color is Canary Yellow, an outstanding color, an
eye catching color of the 70s, doesn't everybody love a classic Porsche in a highly
desirable color? Options include fog lights, leather steering wheel, AM/FM
radio, special light weight alloy wheels (MAHLE "gas burner"), ultra
rare electric rear window defrost, front and rear swaybars, and chrome bumpers.
Included with the car are both original California Blue License plates with
the selling dealer’s license plate frame, original owner's manual, tool kit,
tire jack, spare tire, and records. This car was restored very recently, completed
in 2012 and only driven 1800 miles since the restoration. This car retains 98%
of its original 914-6 only very hard to find parts, the drive train has been properly
modified but the changes are invisible from the exterior. All original parts
removed from the car are included with the car. Original 914--6 cars had a few quirky flaws - they were
under powered, the brakes were a little too small, and the shifting was a
little vague. In order to overcome these issues this car has been corrected
with a large number of proper upgrades during the restoration. With only a few
modifications the 914-6 can be changed into the car that Porsche originally
intended it to be. 110 horsepower is not enough in this car so the original
engine was put into boxes and a fully rebuilt 3.0L took its place with an
estimated 250HP by way of aggressive camshafts, high compression JE pistons,
and mild cylinder head work. The 911T brakes are too small so we changed them
to Brembo AM alloy calipers, a direct bolt on caliper that looks and operates exactly
the same as a 911S caliper (note that these calipers were added after the pictures were taken). Now the car confidently comes to a stop no matter
how fast you go. A larger front swaybar was installed along with a factory
original rear swaybar. Finally the transmission was put aside for retaining
originality, in its place is a re-built side shift style transmission that has
been treated to a limited slip differential, a billet intermediate plate to
hold the power, and larger axles with 911CVs. This car now is faster and handles better than a 911RS
lightweight! Please call Mark Allen with questions or to purchase directly, I reserve the right to cancel the auction if a local sale is made. 760-522-0090 Technical details California chassis
- with original blue license plates, was torn down to a bare shell, placed on a
rotisserie, BARE METAL RE-PAINT inside and out the correct color, no rust
repair was needed – all original pans/metal. If you could find a 914-6 project it would be very doubtful that it would be rust free as these cars are prone to rust if they have ever lived in harsh climets or been stored outside. See the end of the listing for pre-paint work pictures of the car on a rostisserie. Interior -
original material in most all areas and in very good to excellent shape.
Original upper and lower dash with no cracks, unlike other restorations this car wears a proper original dash - not a vinyl re-cover dash. Original Blaupunkt AM/FM radio in
working condition with good original speakers, gauges restored by Hollywood Speedo, original seats, back
pad and seat belts, original door panels (might need a little more work to make
them perfect), replacement perlon carpet. Rubber was all replaced as needed. Chrome bumpers were re-chromed and NOS original rubber bumper tops installed. All lenses have been replaced with NOS original Hella lenses. Original engine &
transmission – Included in boxes, the original engine was torn down and in
the process of a rebuild – cylinder heads were rebuilt, parts cleaned, various
other prep. During this time it was determined that a completely different
engine would be better suited to high performance driving. The original engine
comes with the car boxed up. The original transmission was rebuilt but never
used, it is included with the car boxed up. The original axles and shift
linkage are also included with the car boxed up. The way this car was done
allows for complete reversal of the modified parts so that this car could be
put back together in its 100% original stock form. The pictures of the extra parts can be seen at the very bottom of this page. Engine mounted in the

1974 Porsche 914 EV conversion still looks good
Thu, Jan 23 2014Looking through the pages of the EV Album is a great way to learn about the breadth and depth of the electric vehicle community. Branching well beyond the three dozen or so electric vehicles that are currently sold by major automakers in the US, EV Album showcases lots of DIY conversions of all types. A 1995 Fiat Cinquecento? Check. A 1992 Kewet Eljet 2? No problem. The site's old-fashioned looks (it was started in 1997) show just how long people have been passionate about their EVs. Many of the cars are throwbacks to a previous time and we found a prime example of that, a converted 1974 Porsche 914 (EV Album page here) this week. Now powered by a Prestolite MTC4001 Series Wound DC motor and some flooded nickel-cadmium batteries, the 914 has a top speed of 80 miles per hour and a range of 35 miles. But only "if you are taking it easy," of course. The motor has a peak output of 60 horsepower and 25 hp continuous. Converted over 600 hours (!) to electric power at a cost of $10,000, it is now owned by Charlie Garlow of Maryland. The car is on display at the Washington Auto Show this week and serves as a great reminder of what most EV drivers used to have to do to drive emissions free. 2020 Porsche 911 Speedster spied with an angry driver
Wed, Feb 13 2019Porsche gave us details and showed us a concept of the 911 Speedster at the Paris Motor Show. Today, we bring you spy shots of what appears to be the production version of that concept with a few changes on board. They're rather minimal modifications, but the Speedster's driver appears especially angry with our spy photographer as he extends his middle finger directly toward the camera. Sorry, not sorry, Mr. Test Driver. Public testing of pre-production cars always comes with photo risks, and Porsches tend to attract more attention than others. You'll notice what appears to be a Cayenne Coupe prototype we've previously spotted running around with the 911. The Speedster Concept we saw in Paris had epic retro mirrors and fuel cap on the front hood, but both those design touches are absent from this pre-production car. It's tougher to see, but we lost the vents in between the two humps, as well. Everything else appears to have made it to production-spec. We can't say we're surprised these concept car features probably won't show up on the production car, but it is a tad deflating. You'll notice the Speedster is based-off the 991.2 generation of 911 and not the new 992. Porsche did a similar thing when the 997 generation was coming to an end with a Speedster model paying tribute to that car's life. The chassis is said to utilize parts from the 911 GT3, and the wonderful naturally aspirated flat-six engine gets carried over from that car, too. Porsche didn't specify if power will be exactly the same as the GT3, but we'll be expecting about 500 horsepower and a 9,000 rpm redline. We were told the six-speed manual would be offered on the Speedster in Paris, too. Let's just say that we strongly approve of that combination. Production will be limited to only 1,948 cars and begin in the first half of this year. We'll expect a reveal with a full spec breakdown soon, possibly for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Jay Leno's Dodge Challenger raises $585k for USO in Scottsdale
Mon, Jan 19 2015Of all the metal moved in Scottsdale, AZ, this holiday weekend, the one you see here was hardly the most expensive. But it's noteworthy for another reason: despite being a relatively humble, second-hand 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, raised an impressive $565,625. That's because, first of all, it belonged to Jay Leno, and secondly because the proceeds were going to the USO. Leno donated the modern muscle car from his collection to benefit our men and women in uniform, and was on hand to present the car on stage at the Gooding & Company auction, along with USO president J.D. Crouch II and former Army chief of staff General George W. Casey, Jr. After frenzied and patriotic bidding, the gavel ultimately dropped at $360,000, accompanied by over $200,000 in additional contributions, bringing the total amount donated to the USO to over half a million. Commendable though it was, of course the Challenger didn't garner the highest bids at the auction. A 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider sold for $7.7 million and a 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS fetched $2.4 million. A rare 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Series I Coupe Aerodinamico sold for over $4,070,000 – which, according to Sports Car Market, is the most ever paid at auction for a 400 Superamerica. And a 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 also sold for a record $1.98 million.
