1966 Porsche 912 in Guards Red over Black

VIN 451918

This 1966 SWB 3-guage dash 912 began life Bahama Yellow to later be resprayed in Guards Red. The paint was done in the late 80s and still maintains a nice shiny finish with expected dings and imperfections for the age. Interior was also redone at the time including front seat and jump seat upholstery, firewall panel, carpet, sun visors and carpet. The interior presents itself well with no rips or tears in the vinyl upholstery.

Despite the number of years elapsed, the car appears to have been driven less than 20,000 miles since the cosmetic work. The odometer reads about 88,000 miles now (and counting). I have an extensive set of service receipts that begin in 1983 at about 28,000 miles and progressively accrue miles to the current figure without odometer rollover indicated which works out to about 2,000 miles per year over that 30 year period.

The 912 was a CA car serviced by Charlie's Foreign Car in Encinitas until bought and driven to NC in 1987. The body is straight with minimal rust showing at base of front windshield gasket. Floor pans appear original and are excellent along with front suspension pan. New gas tank from Performance Porsche in 2005. Minor rust was properly repaired in the smuggler's box two years ago with a very small spot below battery treated Naval Jelly with no change since. Overall it's a terrific example of a fundamentally rust free 912.

An extensive mechanical overhaul was completed in 2010 with an estimated 3000 miles driven since. This was a no expense spared rebuild of the engine and 5-speed transmission with receipts totaling about $11K. Work was completed by a reputable BMW and Porsche restoration shop in NC. New jugs, pistons, crank bearings, rod bearings, crank pulley, etc. New voltage regulator and Bosch blue coil. 5-Speed received new sync rings, 1/2, 3/4 sliders, rear bearing, gasket/seal kit, shift arm and shifter bushings. A CSP high performance oil cooler was installed at an additional cost of $858. Exhaust is through a $414 "Quiet Street" setup from Classic and Speed Parts. 40 IDF Weber carburetors bought new for the car in 2004 were rebuilt. Gauges recently calibrated. Receipts for all work will be included with sale. The folder of receipts is about 1" thick and dates back to 1982.

Recent oil and filter change with Brad Penn 20W50. Rear suspension bushings were just replaced with high quality Elephant Racing parts. Since photos, new Falken Ziex 912 tires have been installed and I lightly polished the wheel aluminum by hand.

This 912 is a beautiful, well sorted example of a very high driver quality car.  More pics are available upon request. $500 non refundable Paypal deposit due at end of auction with pickup within 10 days. Local inspection is welcome and encouraged

China bans military license plates on luxury autos

    Wed, 01 May 2013

Driving a vehicle with a military license plate in China provides many privileges. Legally reserved for official vehicles only, the designation apparently allows drivers to enjoy special liberties on the roads, including breaking traffic laws, filling up with free fuel and receiving light-and-siren escorts through congested cities. So attractive are the benefits that there is a secondary market for used legal and counterfeit plates - especially among those wealthy enough to afford luxury cars. But all of that is reportedly coming to an end, as President Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission, is on a mission to fight corruption in his country.
A new license plate system goes into effect today, and it is designed to "maintain social harmony, stability and the reputation of the military," says the PLA Daily, the armed forces' official newspaper. While the abuse has been going on for many years, the internet has put the spotlight on the bad behavior, and the negative press does not represent the morals and true colors of the armed forces, say officials.
While military-plated Porsche drivers have been singled out as offenders, Bloomberg notes that all vehicles with engine displacements above 3.0 liters and with a sticker price in excess of about $73,000, will be banned from receiving military plates. This includes vehicles from Audi, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and the Volkswagen Phaeton. Even if drivers are savvy enough to circumvent the new issuing system, the military has put technology at toll gates to catch users of counterfeit plates. There has been no word on the punishment if caught.

2014 Porsche 911 Targa takes its crop-top off in Motor City

    Mon, 13 Jan 2014

Back in 1965, Porsche invented the 911 Targa as a matter necessity. Believing that a finicky National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was prepared to outlaw convertibles, the innovative automaker created the half-open car as a way to keep wind rushing through owners' hair. Though far removed from those formative days, it seems as though the 2015 Porsche 911 Targa has come to the Detroit Auto Show with a new-school version of some old-school tech.
While the last Targa featured a trick sliding glass roof at the touch of the button, the new car dramatically swallows a traditional-looking panel via an exceptionally complex-looking mechanical operation. The net result is "the same fun factor and freedom" that can be had with a complete convertible, though with slightly more open-driving protection while underway.
And, as is the case with all of the current 911 range, getting underway can be done with reasonable rapidity. The entry-level Targa 4 rocks a 350-horsepower, 3.4-liter flat-six engine just behind the rear axle, making that car good for 175 miles per hour at the top end (with the seven-speed manual, 174 mph with PDK) and a 0-to-60 sprint of 4.6 seconds. The Targa 4S, meanwhile, offers 400 horsepower from 3.8-liters of boxer six, runs to 60 in 4.2 seconds and hits a top "track speed" of 183 mph.

Is your new-car warranty good at the race track?

    Mon, Feb 27 2017

We've all heard the horror stories. Your buddy knows a girl that was dating a guy whose best friend's brother once broke his brand-new, recently purchased performance car while making runs at a drag strip or laps at a track day, and the manufacturer wouldn't cover the repair under warranty. True story? Urban legend? Complete crap? Yes, no, maybe. One thing's for sure: Automotive warranties have always come with caveats. In 1908, an ad in the Trenton Evening Times clearly stated: "All Ford Cars Guaranteed for One Year." Although it changed over time, by 1925 the Ford New Car Guarantee only covered 90 days on material and 30 days on labor, and it clearly stated that that there was "No guarantee whatever on Fan Belts, Glass, Bulbs, Wiring, Transmission, Bands, Hose Connections, Commutator Shells, Rollers, Spark Plugs or Gaskets." Whether or not Ol' Henry would pay to fix your Model T if you broke it shaving a tenth off your lap time at the local board track seems to be lost to history. We're guessing no. But what about today? Do new-car warranties in 2017 cover cars when they are driven on race tracks? We researched the warranties of 14 auto brands to find out, and the answer is yes, no, maybe, depending on the brand, in some cases the model, and whether or not your car is modified from stock. Acura has been out of the high-performance car game for a number of years, but jumps back into the party in 2017 with its hybrid-powered $173,000 NSX supercar. And Acura's warranty, as well as Honda's, clearly states that it does not cover "the use of the vehicle in competition or racing events." View 33 Photos So we asked Sage Marie, Senior Manager of Public Relations for Honda and Acura. "If the car is stock, the warranty covers it on a track just as it does on the street. No question," he told us. "However, if the car is modified, say with slick tires or other components that would put higher stresses on the vehicle's parts and systems, then we would have to investigate the circumstances further." Marie went on to say the same would be true for any Acura model or Honda vehicle, including the new 2017 Honda Civic Si. This became a common theme. Chevrolet actually started this practice with the fifth-generation Camaro on the high-performance ZL1 and Z/28 models.
