2015 Porsche 918 Spyder: Touring the factory

Willy Wonka granted just five lucky Golden Ticket holders access to his incredible chocolate factory, yet we consider ourselves just as fortunate, as Porsche invited us to be among the first of just four American journalists to see behind the closed doors of its 918 Spyder assembly plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany. Of course, there were no Oompa Loompas or flowing chocolate rivers, but the vast white hall tasked with producing only 918 examples of the automaker's limited-production flagship revealed details that make Wonka's Golden Egg sorting room seem rather mundane in comparison. Unlike a traditional automobile manufacturing plant, which often encompass all processes of making a vehicle (e.g., stamping steel panels, welding components and painting), the 918 Spyder is built in an assembly plant. This means that hundreds of already manufactured parts, each crafted by Porsche offsite suppliers, are brought under one roof to be assembled into a perfectly finished product that is much sweeter – and far more expensive – than any candy delicacy. Our tour guide was Michael Drolshagen, Porsche's Director of Production, Logistics and Quality - a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the engineering and assembly of the 918 Spyder. Drolshagen generously offered us unrestricted access to walk among the factory's 110 workers – and a couple-dozen vehicles in process – to photograph everything. See what the Chevy C7 ZR1 may be benchmarked against

One of the greatest things every Corvette has had going for it, and also one of the most re-used arguments against it, is its price-to-performance equation - long before the Nissan GT-R became the de facto Porsche 911 comparator the Corvette spent decades as Exhibit A. Depending on which side of the argument you stressed, supporters crowed about how much performance you got for how (comparatively) little, detractors carped on how little you got everywhere else in the bargain.
It appears Chevrolet is working as hard as ever to render the argument meaningless. Spy shooters at KGP captured a convocation of European birds of prey leaving the General Motors test center, and aimed at benchmarking the C7 Corvette ZR1. The road train comprised of two C7 Corvette Stingrays, a 2013 Corvette ZR1, McLaren MP4-12C, Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8 V10 Spyder and Porsche 911 Carrera S and it was last seen heading down the same kinked-up back roads used to hone the Corvette Stingray.
The C7-series ZR1 and its possible 700 horsepower are still a ways off. If it really is being positioned to compete with the celestial exotica in the testing group, could it be the first Corvette to regularly be the first answer to the question "Cost no object, which would would you rather have?"

Porsche Macan teaser reveals unique quad-LEDs

In truth, all-but-undisguised prototypes for the upcoming Porsche Macan compact crossover have been spotted galavanting all around the globe for some time now, but even the least-camouflaged examples have been caught wearing eyepatches covering their headlights and taillights. A dark new teaser image from Porsche clues us in to why that is - the baby Cayenne is getting unique quad-LED peepers up front.
Porsche has been hinting at lighting innovations in its production cars through recent concept reveals, including the stunning Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo showcar from last year's Paris Motor Show. The wagonized Panamera also featured four-point LED arrays up front, as well is in the rear, so it seems likely that this lighting will become a Porsche design signature going forward.
Powerpoint slides leaked from a recent dealer meeting suggest the Macan S will arrive packing a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, while the Macan Turbo will boast a 3.6-liter force-fed unit, with both models receiving seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearboxes. Pricing is expected to range from $52,000 for the S model to $75,000 for the Turbo.
