Extremely Clean & Nicely-optioned Tiptronic Turbo Cabriolet. Outstanding Colors on 2040-cars
Emeryville, California, United States
2008 Porsche Turbo Cabriolet Tiptronic
Introduced for the 2005 model year, the 997 generation of the Porsche 911 addressed many of the complaints about the 996 generation before it. Having almost gone out of business in the early 1990s, Porsche embarked on an aggressive program to reduce the cost of building cars by enhancing the efficiency of the manufacturing process and by designing cars that were themselves less costly to produce. The 996 emerged from this new type of thinking, and together with the Boxster, reversed the company’s decline and laid the groundwork for the success the company now enjoys. Critics complained that while the 996 drove well, the quality and aesthetics had suffered, and the 997 brought both higher quality and exceptional good looks back to the forefront of the Porsche 911 value proposition. The cars were available in a wide range of variants with the Turbo lying at the intersection of blindingly fast and also surprisingly usable. Although it produces 480hp and is capable of 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 193mph, the car has all wheel drive and is quiet, refined, and provides surprisingly accessible performance. Coupled with automatic transmission, the car is imminently usable as an every day car. This particular car is a two-owner California car that was sold new at Porsche of Livermore to a Software Executive who bought it for his wire. The car is heavily optioned, including many Porsche Exclusive options. The options include: silver faced gauges, Tiptronic S transmission, heated seats, 363mm leather steering wheel, painted rocker panels, steering column casing in leather, color coded sport seat backrests, embossed headrests with Porsche crests, inner sill finishers in leather, door finishers in leather, rear section of center console in leather, and leather sun visors. The car was regularly dealer serviced and is in exceptional cosmetic condition. It is clear that the car was carefully driven and stored, and its cosmetic condition is consistent with a car that has covered 15,000 or 20,000 miles. The paintwork is in very good condition, with a few minor marks from road use, but no major blemishes. The underside of the front spoiler shows some scraping, but nothing major, and the front of the car as well as the side mirrors, door edges and door handle recesses are protected by clear bra. The glass and lights are in excellent shape with only light road wear to the windscreen. The panels are straight and fit correctly. The interior is in equally impressive, if not more impressive condition. There are virtually no signs of wear or aging anywhere. The leather on the driver’s seat has very few signs of wear or use, and the extensive leather trim, which covers even the sills, dashboard, center console, door caps, and sun visors, is all in excellent shape. The only indicated wear is near the key hole and perhaps a bit of shine to the steering wheel rim. The carpets, switches, instruments, and controls are all like new. The engine compartment and trunk are equally impressive in condition, appearing essentially as new. The engine is extremely clean, with hardly any dust or dirt to speak of, while the trunk appears like new and is complete with factory tire compressor and tools. The car is effortless to drive yet tremendously fast. It is tractable and perfectly happy cruising in town but is explosively fast when desired. The chassis is composed and stiff, but the ride surprisingly comfortable while the brakes are exceptional. In all, the car is massively capable when desired, and very mild-mannered and civilized at the same time. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a very clean Turbo Cabriolet that is heavily optioned and finished in a beautiful color combination. A 2-owner California car, this example is in excellent shape and will represent an exhilarating driver when called upon, and a perfectly well-behaved car otherwise. It is complete with extensive manual pack, tools, and compressor. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: This car is sold AS IS without warranty. A 10% deposit is due upon the successful completion of the auction. Which is quicker in the standing mile, a Subaru WRX STI or a Porsche Cayman?
Thu, 26 Jun 2014The 2015 Subaru WRX STI and 2014 Porsche Cayman are both saddled with unfair reputations. The STI with its huge wing and gold wheels has the title of the ultimate boy-racer. On the other hand, Porsche brand snobs look down on he base Cayman as just a wannabe 911. In reality, they are both pretty fantastic performance cars. But what would happen if the two of them lined up at a stoplight, and maybe the guy in the suit in the Cayman started throwing some revs at the young man in the STI? Automobile decided to find out in a recent video pitting the two stereotyped hot rods against each other in a standing-mile drag race.
In terms of raw numbers, they are surprisingly close. Both use flat engines and six-speed manual transmissions here, but the Subaru has more power and torque. However, the Porsche makes up for it with 300 pounds less weight. Neither should have a problem with traction either thanks to the STI's sophisticated all-wheel-drive setup, and the Cayman's mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
The comparable specs certainly show themselves in the real world for the race. We're not going to give away the winner here because it's too exciting, but let's just say the finish is very, very close. Scroll down to watch both of them shrug off their stereotypes and show off their real performance.
Topiary Joe sculpts the ultimate in green cars
Sat, Mar 15 2014Efficient cars are all the rage these days, but Joe Kyte has made a business of crafting some of the coolest green cars around – literally. Kyte is better known by his nickname Topiary Joe, and in addition to being a talented artist, he is also a real gearhead. Kyte has been creating topiaries for the last 20 years. It began when he was marketing greenhouse products to Walt Disney World and saw their plant sculptures. He realized that he could do that and since then, has done around 3,400 pieces. His most intriguing creations are the rolling sculptures that move and turn. Prices for those start at about $18,000 and can be as high as $30,000. While, the wheels are machine-bent, Kyte said all the other parts are done with a table vice and a Lincoln Electric arc welder. Topiary Joe is taking the Porsche (pictured above) to Palm Beach later this year to sell or says he may donate it to Porsche North America. If you really want it, the sculpture is currently on Craigslist for sale for $24,000. Topiary Joe has also had a life-long love of cars. "I was driving my first MG Midget before I was 14," he told Autoblog. He grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, where the Manhattan Project was partially developed. He says the town was full of recent college grads driving Mercedes, and he caught the bug. His automotive mentor was a nuclear physicist who taught him to repair and restore the Mercs. Kyte has completed commissions for Sandals Resort, Dreamworks, Absolut, and many more. Among his favorite creations is the Ferrari that he created at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that is now exhibited at the airport each year before the race. Check out his website for a wider look at his work.
Magnus Walker turbocharges his love for the Porsche 911
Thu, 31 Oct 2013He's had his fill of early, long-hood Porsche 911s - he owns at least one from each model year, from 1964 to 1973 - so Magnus Walker, a fanatic of the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker, recently set his sights on the early Porsche 930, as documented by this XCAR video called 'Turbo Fever.' Let us translate: pretty soon Walker will own all of the earliest, non-intercooled 911 Turbos - at least one from each model year, starting at 1975 and ending at 1977 (though the 1975 911 Turbo Carrera never officially was imported to the US by Porsche, so it'll be tougher to find one Stateside).
Any Porsche enthusiast can tell you why they love their car, and it often comes down to the small details that differentiate one model year from another. One of many examples is the mid-'80s 928. They look similar, but the basic difference between a 1984 Porsche 928 S and a 1985 928 S (US-spec) is two camshafts and 54 horsepower, though each car's V8 has its own pros and cons. We'll let Magnus Walker tell you all about the 930 and what makes the first three years special, as he's becoming quite the expert on early, air-cooled 911s. When the nearly 15-minute mini-documentary was filmed, which you can view below, he already had added four early 930s to his collection!
