Introduced for the 2005 model year, the 997 generation of the Porsche 911 addressed many of the complaints about the 996 generation before it. Having almost gone out of business in the early 1990s, Porsche embarked on an aggressive program to reduce the cost of building cars by enhancing the efficiency of the manufacturing process and by designing cars that were themselves less costly to produce. The 996 emerged from this new type of thinking, and together with the Boxster, reversed the company’s decline and laid the groundwork for the success the company now enjoys. Critics complained that while the 996 drove well, the quality and aesthetics had suffered, and the 997 brought both higher quality and exceptional good looks back to the forefront of the Porsche 911 value proposition. The cars were available in dozens of forms, with the S models gaining a 3.8 liter 380hp powerplant in place of the 3.6 liter 355hp of the standard car, as well as wider fender flares on the 4 wheel drive variants.

This car is a Carrera 4S Cabriolet, which means it is equipped with the 3.8 liter 380hp engine, as well as the wider flares of the Carrera 4. It was originally sold in California and has covered about 35,000 miles from new. It is equipped with 6-speed manual transmission and was optioned with navigation, color wheel crests, and Sport Chrono. The car also has an iPod hardwire cable in the glove box. The car is complete with extensive books set, tools, compressor, and wind deflector. The car went to the Porsche dealer (Sonnen) in November of 2013 to get a check over and repair any issues under warranty that were needed. The tire pressure monitoring system sensors were replaced and a few other items addressed. The car was also thoroughly inspected and found to be in great shape overall.

The car is in very nice condition, with only light wear to the paint from regular road use. There are minor chips to the paint on the front bumper and deck lid, but no other significant wear to report. The wheels are in good shape, with minor curb marks on the rear wheels, but none present on the front wheels. The trim is in good shape and the panels are straight. The glass and lights are in very good shape as well.

The interior is in good condition other than some wear to the leather on the driver’s seat bolster and the hand brake handle. There are some burn marks on the passenger’s seat. The carpets are excellent, as is the dashboard and the accompanying switches and controls. The engine compartment and trunk are in excellent shape, with no modifications and complete original equipment including DVD navigation, tools, books, compressor, wind deflector, and bag for the wind deflector.

This is a low mileage widebody Carrera 4 Cabriolet in very nice condition. It is a California car from new and is a great driving and quick car that can be driven daily in all kinds of weather. The car is very complete with books, tools, and compressor.

Automakers not currently promoting EVs are probably doomed

Mon, Feb 22 2016

Okay, let's be honest. The sky isn't falling – gas prices are. In fact, some experts say that prices at the pump will remain depressed for the next decade. Consumers have flocked to SUVs and CUVs, reversing the upward trend in US fuel economy seen over the last several years. A sudden push into electric vehicles seems ridiculous when gas guzzlers are selling so well. Make hay while the sun shines, right? A quick glance at some facts and figures provides evidence that the automakers currently doubling down on internal combustion probably have some rocky years ahead of them. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is a prime example of a volume manufacturer devoted to incremental gains for existing powertrains. Though FCA will kill off some of its more fuel-efficient models, part of its business plan involves replacing four- and five-speed transmissions with eight- and nine-speed units, yielding a fuel efficiency boost in the vicinity of ten percent over the next few years. Recent developments by battery startups have led some to suggest that efficiency and capacity could increase by over 100 percent in the same time. Research and development budgets paint a grim picture for old guard companies like Fiat Chrysler: In 2014, FCA spent about $1,026 per car sold on R&D, compared with about $24,783 per car sold for Tesla. To be fair, FCA can't be expected to match Tesla's efforts when its entry-level cars list for little more than half that much. But even more so than R&D, the area in which newcomers like Tesla have the industry licked is infrastructure. We often forget that our vehicles are mostly useless metal boxes without access to the network of fueling stations that keep them rolling. While EVs can always be plugged in at home, their proliferation depends on a similar network of charging stations that can allow for prolonged travel. Tesla already has 597 of its 480-volt Superchargers installed worldwide, and that figure will continue to rise. Porsche has also proposed a new 800-volt "Turbo Charging Station" to support the production version of its Mission E concept, and perhaps other VW Auto Group vehicles. As EVs grow in popularity, investment in these proprietary networks will pay off — who would buy a Chevy if the gas stations served only Ford owners? If anyone missed the importance of infrastructure, it's Toyota.

Motor Trend puts Chevy Camaro Z28 and Porsche 911 GT3 Head 2 Head

Mon, Dec 29 2014

Motor Trend admits, "This is an unfair comparison." But that doesn't make it any less fun to watch when they pit a Camaro Z/28 against the Porsche 911 GT3. The former has a 7.0-liter V8 with 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque shifted through a six-speed manual. The latter has a 3.8-liter flat-six with 475 hp and 324 lb-ft shifted through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Yet those are only the little disparities – the big disparities are mass and money: the Camaro weighs 3,882 pounds and costs $76,150 as-tested, the Porsche weighs 3,267 pounds and costs $145,785. But they're both about hardcore performance, so MT takes them out on the street, to the drag strip, to the parking lot for figure eights and a skidpad test, and finally to Big Willow for Randy Pobst to give his professional assessment. Remember when a lotta people spent a lotta time debating Pirates vs. Ninjas? This is like that, only it's the "haul-ass good-time car" vs. the "track surgeon." Enjoy the debate in the video.

Updated J.D. Power APEAL study shines on VW Group, Chevy

Wed, 24 Jul 2013

J.D. Power has just revealed the results of its 2013 APEAL Study, which looks at which brands have the most appealing cars based on sales figures, dealer inventory, brand loyalty, transaction and trade-in prices. The study was revamped for 2013, and places a larger focus on the new tech and infotainment options available to customers. All told, study participants gauged their vehicles on 77 different attributes, delivering a score out of a 1,000 points.
The Volkswagen Group had the greatest success of any corporation, topping the APEAL rankings with the Audi Allroad, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayenne, VW GTI and Passat. Chevrolet had the highest number of awards for a single brand, though, with the Avalanche, Sonic and Volt all taking home a prize.
The best brand overall was Porsche, which scored 884 out of a possible 1,000 points. The top Japanese brand was Lexus with a score of 847, while the top American brand was Cadillac, at 841. The best mainstream brand was Ram, which received a very respectable 817. The industry average for this year's study was 795, with 16 brands, all of which were mainstream, falling below the average.
