Private owner selling my stunning black w/rare factory optioned camel color, all-leather interior, low mileage, 911 Carrera 4S . This car looks like new, inside and out and is exquisitely maintained by a non-smoker and is well cared for.

For those not familiar with the model 4S, it features all-wheel drive and everything from the Turbo Model but the engine, substituting a very powerful normally aspirated  3.6L, 315HP motor in its place. (Claimed 0-60 in 4.2 to 4.6 sec depending on the article.) Besides the engine, the 4S and the Turbo are the same car. Differentiating from the other Carrera models, the 4S also features the more attractive wide-body, like the Turbo, the larger Turbo brakes, the firmer and lower Turbo suspension, the bigger Turbo internal side radiators, a composite deck lid and a spoiler that pops-up (at about 70mph) and an all-leather interior (seems like every surface is covered in this beautiful leather). BTW: The seats look new. This car features a manual 6 speed transmission.

This 911 4S features many factory options, including: Leather Power Sport Seats with the Memory Package for Driver & Passenger, Bose Sound System, Xenon Headlights, Porsche Crest Wheel Center Caps and many other options standard on a 4S, but only available as adders/expensive options on lessor Carrera models.

I just (less than 75 miles ago) outfitted the car with new, high-speed, Sumitomo performance tires and a new Bosch battery. The A/C is ice cold. I have all the service records. It's been driven mostly highway miles and has never seen snow or rain. My wife says I take care of my Porsche better than her... maybe she's right! Selling because I m going to the dark side and buying a new 2014 Corvette Stingray, for a change of pace, after owning my 3rd Porsche.

Update 09/29/13: I have had several inquires concerning the Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) on my 996 series Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. In order to alleviate this concern, I have dropped the car off at Michael Stead Porsche, Walnut Creek, CA to have the IMS bearing replaced. They will update it with a Ceramic Hybrid Ball-Bearing Replacement. While the engine is out-of-the car for this, I have instructed them to replace the clutch (even though it probably doesn't need a new clutch) and the main rear seals. I'll need my list price for the car, otherwise I'm keeping it! :) The car will be ready Monday, September 30, 2013. Also, while at the dealer, they will provide a full written "Pre-Purchase Inspection" of the car.

This is probably one of the best 2003 911 4S Carrera's in the country. It's not going to last and I might change my mind about selling after I get it back from the Dealer's service, you never know...

Nick Murray's problematic Porsche 911 shows the power of a viral video

Fri, 18 Apr 2014

When Nick Murray took delivery of his 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S in June 2013, he had saved for it for the past five years. He didn't just pluck a random 911 off a dealer lot. He specially ordered his car with thousands of dollars in extras tailored just to him, and he captured all of the options on his YouTube channel. The love affair didn't last long. Eventually the channel became a place for Nick to air his growing list of grievances about his deteriorating 911. Eventually, his mix of righteous indignation and sarcasm went viral.
By late December, he had already had four warranty repairs done on the car. Things got much worse in March. The computers began resetting whenever Nick drove over large bumps. There was also an acrid, electrical smell that occasionally permeated the cabin. Murray filed for Lemon Law protection. Porsche Cars North America contacted him for the first time to fix the problem, but it didn't help.
Things culminated in April when Murray put up a new video that showed more troubles. He began arbitration with Porsche and asked for either his full purchase price back or an exact replacement. The company countered with a portion of what the car was worth, based on its mileage. Murray refused and turned to his YouTube watchers for help. He asked them to spread the word, and the video went viral with over 800,000 views as of this writing. Supporters posted it multiple times on Porsche's Facebook and Twitter sites.

VW Group to split brands under four holding companies

Tue, Jun 16 2015

The Volkswagen Group is planning a tremendous shift in its internal structure that will decentralize operations by splitting its 12 brands into four different holding companies. Here's the breakdown. Things will be split logically, considering the inter-sharing of parts, platforms, and engines. The Volkswagen brand, Seat, and Skoda make up a passenger vehicle division led by former BMW man Herbert Diess. Audi, which is tightly intertwined with Lamborghini and motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, will be managed by current Audi exec Rupert Stadler. Porsche and Bentley, which are already quite close, will be joined by Bugatti and run by Matthias Mueller. Finally, a commercial vehicles division will include Volkswagen Commercial, Scania, and Man. Former Daimler exec Andreas Renschler will take care of the big vehicles. The massive move, according to Automotive News Europe, is part of an internal VAG effort to move away from the structure established by ousted Chairman Ferdinand Piech, who favored a compact, but highly centralized, management structure to oversee the independent actions of the company's brands. Criticism of Piech's arrangement stemmed from the company's slow responses to changes in the market, ANE reports. The new structure should make for a more efficient, streamlined company that's better able to make crucial decisions. What are your thoughts? Should VAG decentralize, or did Piech have the right idea? Have your say in Comments.

Why won't automakers slap on a turbo badge anymore?

Thu, Sep 10 2015

Where have all the turbos gone? Not the actual pieces that go in the engine, mind you, those are everywhere these days as automakers downsize cylinder counts and boost efficiency and CO2 claims. But the turbo badges and fanfare are missing. Back when turbos were something to get excited about there was "turbo-driven," "turbonium," and "The Turbo Zone," among other silly lines. But now that basically every car is getting some sort of boost even on the lowliest trims, automakers are almost sliding in the turbos under the radar. Or if you look at some of the nomenclature, pretending they don't exist at all. The 911 Turbo badge shows where the car goes from being sane to lunatic. It's an important border. The latest automaker to hide that it has boosted the turbo presence is Porsche with the 2017 911 lineup. Even the standard Carrera models now get turbocharged flat-six engines, meaning the 911 Turbo models aren't quite as special as they once were. Porsche is in a sticky situation with this. The 911 Turbo, after all, signifies where the 911 family takes off from being a sports car and becomes the Ferrari fighter. The 911 Turbo badge shows where the car goes from being sane to lunatic. It's an important border, but now Porsche has crossed it and is trying to downplay the fact. There are a lot of exaggerations with displacement badges today, with claims the 2.0-liter turbo four in a Mercedes C Class equates to a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter six to make a C300. Volvo is pretty far up there, too, saying an XC90 T8 means V8 power, even though it's a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four with electric assist. I don't know why BMW can't just call the car a 330i Turbo, rather than inflating the numbers up to 340i. Saab tried all of this back in the '90s when it decided to turbocharge its entire lineup, from light pressure units all the way up to models actually called "Saab 9-3 HOT" (for high-output turbo). But then the brand deleted any external reference to the turbo under the hood and people wondered why they were buying a $42,000 four-cylinder convertible. And that didn't turn out well. Even though these turbo replacements often make more power than their naturally aspirated predecessors, they're very different engines. People knew something changed when they exchanged their leased 328i with a 3.0-liter six for a 328i with a 2.0-liter turbo four.
