Up for sale is my 1982 Porsche 911SC ROW project car.  I had to list it as a 1980 due to the VIN.  Please contact me below if you have any concerns regarding this.

I originally purchased this car to use as a DE/Autocross car, and eventually transition it to a full road racer.  Unfortunately, I’ve decided to abandon this project and thin out my “toy cars.”  It is a ROW car which means it has the higher compression 3.0L, with bigger valves.  According to Porsche it makes 204hp compared to 180hp in the North American model.  It was imported through West Palm Beach, FL as indicated on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.  I attempted to contact the owner that originally imported the car, but I was unsuccessful.

I purchased this car in September of 2011 from a body shop about 3 miles from my house (Tampa, FL).  The owner of the shop initially told me it needed an engine because it had “a bad oil pump.”  I decided to have a local independent Porsche mechanic go with me to further inspect the car before the transaction.  We determined the car made immediate oil pressure, within factory specs.  I bought the car that day.  A week and a half later after a tune-up, valve adjustment, oil change, and 6 new fuel injectors, the car pulled hard and ran like a top.  I drove the car back to the body shop and stunned the owner.  We also did a compression & leak down test which showed some air getting past the valve seals.  Depending on the new owner’s desired use for the car, valve seals may be a good idea before hard competitive use.

After driving it for a few months on the weekends without issue, I experienced a failure of the pedal assembly which had corroded.  This likely occurred due to water entry through the windshield seal (fairly common).  So, as most small projects turn into large ones, I decided to start taking the car apart.  This car had fallen into disrepair prior to becoming mine, but as I disassembled it I could tell it had been truly loved at one point.  All of the 930S flares were OEM, had been properly welded on, and lead-filled.  It also had some goodies like 3-piece wheels (17x8.0/17x10), 965 bodywork, Momo steering wheel, Rennline aluminum foot rests, etc.  The only rust was just below the pedal assembly, and in the cowl (the result of a poor Maaco-esque paint job that had trapped moisture around the body seals).  To date, all this has been resolved.  The hole in the floor was just big enough to fit a few fingers through, and has been skillfully patched.  The pedal assembly was also pretty rotten so I replaced it with a factory unit and upgraded to the bronze bushings.  The cowl was also patched on both sides near the fender seals.  The car was left in bare metal and clearcoated so there are no surprises for the new owner.  The passenger side quarter panel is the only one I had a chance to straighten & prime.  I have full pictures of the process which I will send upon request.  The sunroof was also sealed using a steel panel from FennLane Motorsport in the UK.  It was spot welded, all-metal filled, and skim coated.  A roll bar (SCCA/NASA/PCA legal) from Patrick Motorsport was also installed, and the full interior sprayed white.

Over the past couple months I’ve toyed with the idea of selling the car, and even listed it on thesamba.  However, I decided the time has come to let her go.  If you have additional questions, or would like to view the car in the Tampa area prior to bidding, please message, email, or call me to discuss.  Good Luck and Happy Bidding!

The original glass, seats, and spares will be included with the sale.  I will assist the buyer with shipping arrangements.  For international buyers, I can assist with transport of the car to the Florida shipping port of your choice for a reasonable fee.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S vs Ariel Atom Supercharged in unlikely drag battle

Thu, 01 May 2014

David versus Goliath battles are always an enticing proposition, because they offer the chance to watch scrappy underdogs take on their bigger rivals. Evo has set up just such a battle with its latest drag race between the minimalist Ariel Atom 3.5 Supercharged (Ariel Atom 3 pictured below) and the plush Porsche Panamera Turbo S.
The two cars couldn't be more different. The Atom personifies Lotus founder Colin Chapman's well-known axiom: "Simplify, then add lightness." Most of the car doesn't even have a body; it's just an exposed frame with a 310 horsepower supercharged Honda four-cylinder mounted behind the driver. On the other side, there's the Panamera Turbo S. In the latest version, it packs 570 hp and 553 pound-feet from its 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and it features all-wheel drive. Of course, all of that comes with a significant weight penalty.
Off the line, the differences are even more apparent. The Atom doesn't have any of the Porsche's technological wizardry, so launching it challenges the driver to build the revs and let out the clutch just right. The car screams like a banshee as it goes, though. The Porsche is the exact opposite. Its launch control system lets the driver hold down the brake, get on the throttle and accelerate away in just the right way.

Porsche ready to pick itself up after Le Mans failure

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

It's safe to say that things for Porsche didn't go quite as well at Le Mans this year as it might have hoped. After a sixteen-year gap, the winningest manufacturer in endurance racing history returned to the Circuit de la Sarthe this year hoping maybe not for outright victory in its first time back, but definitely a strong finish on which it could build on for next year. All the while it undoubtedly hoped its 911s would hold their own in the GT classes.
Unfortunately for Porsche, neither happened. After racing around the clock, and despite actually leading the festivities for some time, the best its 919 Hybrid could manage was an eleventh-place finish, lagging lamentably behind not only the other LMP1s (like the race-winning Audi) but also a handful of LMP2s. Meanwhile the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am titles went to the factory-backed teams of its arch-rivals Ferrari and Aston Martin, respectively.
Not a stellar result, in other words, but Porsche is taking it all in stride - accepting that it has a ways to go while congratulating its vanquishing rivals in the video below. It's good sportsmanship if we've ever seen it. Next year's race starts now.
