If you ask any Porsche enthusiast, what is the best 911 ever built? Most agree: the 1987-89 Carrera. Why? It's simple, really. It is the last 911 to feature a body style now considered "classic" and the first to incorporate technological advancements such as the vaunted GETRAG G-50 transmission. The Carrera struck the perfect balance between old school and jet age. It is a far cry from the hyper-complex, bloated, electronically regulated, heavyweight 4-seater offered up by Zuffenhausen today. No, this Carrera is the last user friendly Porsche that can be worked on with hand tools instead of plug-and-play computers. Thusly, 26 years later, the last 3.2 Carreras are eminently collectible sports cars. "Buy The Best original example of the Classic you desire, and you'll never be sorry!" is certainly great advice. But finding a pristine example of the 1987-89 G-50 Carrera is not that easy. After 25+ years, these cars are so good that many have logged over 200,000 miles; and are finally showing their age, needing everything. Not surprisingly, perhaps, resale values for the coveted "G-50 Carreras" are strong; typically, higher-mileage examples with questionable repair history carry $20-30K price tags. Finding an immaculate 911, one of the top 1% of survivors, is like winning the lottery. One of just 2,232 Carrera Targas made for the 1988 model year, VIN *WP0EB0916JS160255* comes with only 71,425 miles (hardly broken in) and a clean Vehicle History Report to prove it. Living a sheltered life among a private Porsche collection owned by a mature, prominent businessman in Monterey, the car has never left the Golden State. Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain a coveted 3.2 liter Carrera, one that spent all its life in a most beneficial climate, pampered beyond belief by an owner with big pockets and the willingness to pay up for the best service money can buy. Let's check out this dream find now, inside and out. We start our inspection with the trunk, since this area can deliver valuable clues about a Porsche's true condition.
The featherlight, folding Targa top can be stowed inside the trunk to facilitate unrestricted open-air pleasures. Complete tool roll is still present.
Below the perfect gray felt mat, everything looks pristinely original.
The naked trunk reveals the naked truth. Looking forward, from the untouched VREDESTEIN Space Master spare to the corrosion free battery area; everything is as virginal as it gets.
With or without the top, this black Carrera looks striking.
And yes, the finish is 100% original!
To call the paint "well preserved" would be a gross understatement; the truly marvelous finish has retained its magical luster over the years and still appears stunningly beautiful today.
Euro side markers are a nice addition This Targa has never suffered any damage; there are no door dings, only few blems and rock chips to report.
Hood and door gaps are in perfect alignment; confirming the Carrera's pampered existence for the past 26 years.
Porsche rolls on the 16-inch FUCHS wheels with Toyo Proxes tires of the size 205/55R16 front and 245/50R16 rear. While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath. Area below trunk, including the front suspension pan, looks marvelous as well. It's damage free, clean as a whistle, with all factory finishes preserved in reference quality. More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage. This original chassis presents itself free of any kind of damage or corrosion. Perfectly undisturbed, the undercarriage displays all the factory-applied coatings, including some Zuffenhausen-generated paint overspray. There's no rust, no flaking, no damage, just the all-original finishes.
Most importantly, there is absolutely NO evidence of corrosion, collision damage or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.
How about a quick peek under the deck lid?
Engine compartment looks bone stock and clean as a whistle. Even the factory decals are still in place.
The indestructible 3.2-Liter engine featuring BOSCH MOTRONIC runs excellent, delivering 217 strong Teutonic horses at 5,900rpm. Woo-Hoo!!
Please, note that this matching numbers engine is completely stock and unmodified; even the emissions equipment is still present and fully operational.
Frog's eye view: Notice stainless steel exhaust system. Engine's bottom end. Dry and clean, there's not a single oil leak to note. Recently serviced, no wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this Carrera is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.
Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how perfect the bumpers, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 6-year-old, not a 26-year-old car. This one is that clean!
Let's have a look inside now!
The inviting, 6-way power front seats exude a fantastic aroma; let's investigate!
Classic black 911 interior provides plenty of space, even for 6'6"-tall NBA players.
Leather rear seats; "Pristine" is the only way to describe them properly. Car is fully optioned with ice cold A/C, power disc brakes, seats, mirrors, windows, and even cruise control. Everything works perfectly, of course.
The iconic 911 cockpit featuring five large, circular, white-on-black dials with bright orange pointers, a timeless design. You can't improve upon perfection!
Note the new-for-'88 steering wheel.
And the 071,423 miles shown on the 6-digit odometer are original!
From the Cruise Control to the Blaupunkt AM/FM Cassette audio system; everything still works and sounds great..
Books, manuals, and documents found inside the red vinyl pouch include the owner's manual, maintenance book, dealer directory, accessories brochure and radio instruction manual. And there's also a spare key set. The condition of this leather interior is consistent only with a cherished, low-mileage car that's been garaged all its life.
Drivability: Driving such a low-mileage Carrera is a pure delight; praised be the German engineers. The car starts, runs, drives, shifts, corners, and stops perfectly.
Naturally, a super clean Porsche like this one is a prime attention getter, garnering excited comments wherever you go. From the air conditioner to the clock, everything works as intended. Recently serviced, (receipts included) there's nothing left to do but to drive and enjoy!
The GETRAG G-50 5-speed transmission with its BORG WARNER synchromesh system certainly can handle the Carrera motor's torque; the hydraulic clutch ensures ease of operation. Be it as a daily driver or a cherished collectible, this 911 provides unequalled driving enjoyment, free of depreciation.
You will not see another '87-'89 Carrera coming even close to this particular low-mileage specimen. It's a pristine car, inside and out, with full documentation and no stories. A true heirloom quality 911, with proper care it can be driven forever, until you are ready to pass it on to the next generation. Final words of wisdom: Presently, we have a clear, CA Title. Local sales tax, DMV license and transfer fees apply to residents in CA. All questions must be answered and all inspections must be completed PRIOR TO BIDDING. Another naked Porsche 911 GT3 RS caught in Stuttgart parking garage
Tue, Jan 6 2015With its reveal not expected until the Geneva Motor Show in April, we have to wonder why there'd be a rode-hard-put-away-wet 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS sitting out in the open, completely uncovered. It's one thing to be caught out on the street or in triplicate at a Swedish gas station, but it's another thing to be on what looks like daily driving duty – there's a child's seat in the passenger's throne. Instagram user Johan9ff snagged it, and in response to a query in German as to how, he answered in German (per Google Translate) that he found it in a parking garage in a fitness center in the Stuttgart suburb of Killesberg. Based on its muddy front lip and bug-spattered paint job, the coupe has been naked out on the street and traveling quickly. Out of its camouflage it looks just like we've been led to expect based on the patent photos and the recent winter spy shots, but this time we get an up-close view of the vents over the front wheels. We have one word to say about them: filthy. And if you're wondering about those turbo-like vents on the rear haunches, no, this isn't a GT2 – Porsche has said there won't be a GT2, the current race-certified GT3 RSR has those vents (occasionally found on the previous version as well), and the GT3 RS has already been leaked in scale-model form. This is it. Based on comments left on Porsche forums, production will be limited by the number of orders – the new engine won't meet European regulations coming into force, so it won't be manufactured after this year. Deliveries are said to start at the beginning of summer; those who bought the 918 Spyder will get first dibs, and you can be certain there won't be enough of these to go around. Speaking of that engine, it's said to be good for somewhere between 510 to 525 horsepower, a PDK transmission getting power to staggered wheels, 20-inchers in front, 21-inchers in the back. Johan9ff has slowly been posting Instagram photos of the beast, we're hoping he got at least one of the interior. Those seats looks mega. Bring on Geneva. Porsche's Mauer recalls the history of the 918 Spyder, hints about next-gen 911
Wed, 26 Feb 2014The night before Porsche handed me the keys to its 2015 Macan to drive on both road and track, the company threw together a great dinner for the assembled media in Leipzig. Hosted in Porsche's spaceship-shaped customer delivery center in the eastern German town, I'll admit that I spent the bulk of my night grabbing hors d'oeuvres from passing waiters (they do a nice tuna sashimi), milling around a collection of historic and interesting vehicles on the top floor and gulping down Warsteiner.
In an era of mega car companies, the story of how the 918 came to be was really refreshing.
Before the evening was over, however, Porsche design chief Michael Mauer stopped by my table to exchange pleasantries and thank us all for coming out to drive the Macan. My fellow diners and I passed a pleasant half-hour or more picking the brain of the forthcoming Mauer, and somehow or another, the topic turned to Porsche's newest supercar, the 918 Spyder. In an era of mega car companies (the Volkswagen Group included) and massive development teams, the story of how the 918 came to be is really refreshing.
Hamann Porsche Macan S Diesel promises more performance, questionable looks
Wed, Mar 4 2015Ignore the Gulf Oil livery for a minute (we know, it's hard). What we have under the blue-and-orange paint scheme is a diesel-powered Porsche Macan S, which is fascinating enough in and of itself. But this particular example has been upgraded by the folks at Hamann, for that added bit of oomph. Power output from the 3.0-liter V6 diesel is up from 258 horsepower to 300 hp. We buy diesels for torque, though, so it's the 494 pound-feet, up from 427 lb-ft, that really gets us excited about this modded Porsche. Taken together, the Hamann Macan S Diesel can hit 60 miles per hour in a decidedly un-diesel-like 5.7 seconds, down from 6.1 seconds. German tuners like Hamann are not known for their subtlety, of course, so beyond the power ugprades, the company has made its own aesthetic tweaks. The new body kit is, um, aggressive? Okay, it's really not very nice to look at. The Macan is a handsome vehicle on its own, but Hamann's efforts haven't done it any favors. It's extremely busy, particularly around the front and rear ends, where the tuning company's efforts seem focused. We're guessing some attention has been paid to the cabin, although it's impossible to tell on the Geneva show car, which has had all of its windows heavily tinted. Here's hoping any changes to Macan's cleanly styled cabin are kept to a minimum. Take a look at our full crop of live photos of the modded Macan, direct from the floors of the Geneva Motor Show. High-performance power, long-distance comfort, extravagance: the benchmark figures of the formidable Porsche Macan S Diesel are impressive. For all fans of the dynamic vehicle Hamann's tuning experts now sets the bar even higher. As is generally known, the model's name "Macan" was derived from the Indonesian word for tiger – and exactly this tiger Hamann frees from the ties of a series actor. The face of the Macan, which Hamann presents in the S Diesel version in Geneva, has self-confident traits. The tiger seems ready to jump – an effect achieved by the low line of the front apron and the lowering of the car. Hamann's aerodynamics attachment emphasises the sharp "teeth" of the Macan Turbo's standard front and sets distinctive accents. The car refiner's interpretation of the Macan S Diesel appears well-toned and is coherently continued in powerfully shaped wing extensions making the predator's body grow by twelve centimetres in width.
