Son of Porsche 911 designer recalls 1963 Frankfurt debut

The Goodwood Revival is described by its presenters as the greatest motorsport racing party of the year. We often focus heavily on the motorsports, but you can't forget about the party. For the first preview of the new 911 Turbo in the UK, Porsche recreated its booth from the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963 - the time and place of the original 911's public debut.
Porsche's cameras also caught up with Mark Porsche, the great grandson of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and son of the late Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche, who oversaw the design of the 911. Mark Porsche admires the 911's friendly design, which is set off by the round headlights, and says his mother, who was at the original Frankfurt booth in 1963, was milling around the booth at Goodwood - no doubt taking a trip down memory lane.

Porsche 911 RSR in bizarre, terrifying rally crash

As far as rally crashes go, this one is pretty terrifying. At this month's Hellendoorn Rally, Harry Kleinjan failed to negotiate a turn and drove his Porsche 911 RSR straight into a Jersey barrier, flipping the car into the river.
While it's unclear what caused the accident, German Car Scene notes, "We can see his brakes locking up ahead of the impact, which also ripped both driver's side wheels off, so it may be a case of ill-judged late braking, locking brakes or a jammed throttle." Us? We're betting it might have been bad pace notes. Fortunately for Harry and his co-driver, all indications are that no one was hurt. The 82nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is on.
Audi has won 12 of the last 15 events, the scion of Auto Union is trying to make it 13 this year. To do so, it will have to overcome a situation faced only three other times during its dominance of La Sarthe: underdog status. Toyota has won the first two races of the year and claimed pole for this race, the rumor being that this year it's Toyota's race to lose.
And then there's Porsche. It's been 16 years since the Stuttgart brand raced on the top rung at Le Mans, three years years since it announced its return, just a year since it acquired Mark Webber in a signing that wasn't subtle and a few months since we got eyes on the 919 Hybrid.
