Genuine 356a Speedster Solid California Car Owned By Actor Michael Parks on 2040-cars
Pleasanton, California, United States
1957 Porsche 356A Speedster in fully restored condition. Solid California car with excellent metal throughout, zero rust. Silver exterior with black leather interior. Undercarriage was taken to metal and sealed with epoxy primer for 30 years rust protection. Engine is a correct 1957 case completely rebuilt in excellent running condition. Too many details to list: runs, drives, and looks superb. Previously owned by Michael Parks, an actor whose career spans four decades and comprised over 50 films and TV shows. Quentin Tarantino has called him "the greatest living actor" (His role as a sleazy Columbian pimp in Kill Bill 2 is classic). During the 1960's Michael Parks was expected to be the "next James Dean" because of his persona as well as his looks. In the early 1960's he toured the states doing a one-man show called "My Friend Jim" in which he wore a red windbreaker and channeled Dean in a monologue. He also had a popular TV show called "Then Came Bronson" that aired in 1969 and 1970, much of which was filmed along the Central California Coast. I found this blog entry from someone who encountered Mr Parks driving this Speedster in 1973:
"I then moved to California in 1973 and ended up working opening shift in a gas station in Santa Cruz right where Highway 1 comes down the coast and through Santa Cruz and turns into the freeway headed south. I had just opened up in the early dawn light and this old bathtub Porsche convertible pulls in, and out pops Michael Parks, watch cap, leather jacket and all. He had driven all night up the coast highway from LA. I got to tell him how much it meant to me to ride across the Bixby Creek Bridge and he seemed very much like the character in the show. He told me he had grown up around Big Sur and the bridge scene was his idea. Thanks for the site and for stirring up all that old stuff. Jack W." Mr. Parks sold the Speedster to a Los Angeles private detective in the early 1970's, and the detective stored the car in the Palm Desert for almost 40 years, untouched. He eventually developed cancer which caused him to lose part of his jaw, and he was fitted with a prosthetic face. He could not speak and communicated with me by email to sell the car. The story sounded outlandish, but when we arrived in the Palm Desert there was the car, just as he had written. And here it is, all finished. Porsche updates 919 Hybrid racer for 2015 season
Sun, Jan 18 2015Porsche's grand return to the elite level of global endurance racing showed mixed success in its first year. The company did score one victory in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship season during the race in Brazil but finished in third place overall among the three factory manufacturers. Porsche is hoping for a few more wins in 2015 and is releasing its first shots of the updated car to achieve those triumphs when things kick off in April. The team's racer is still called the 919 Hybrid, but Porsche promises this second-generation version is a "comprehensive evolution" compared to last year. The most obvious change is the redesigned front end where the styling now features a simple horizontal intake running across the front (compare to 2014, below). The nose area also now flares out to the windshield. The side grows a more complicated look, though, with a series of fins just behind the driver compartment. Porsche isn't divulging many details about anything different under the skin. The 2015 919 is still propelled by a 2.0-liter turbocharged V4, and an electric motor powers the front wheels. There are also two energy recovery systems. In addition to the previous challengers from Audi and Toyota, Porsche has one more competitor in the factory ranks this season. The Nissan GT-R LM Nismo is rumored to be a radical departure from the rest of the field with an engine possibly located in front of the driver. Read the German brand's very brief release about the updated 919 Hybrid below and click through the gallery to see how it looks. Track debut for 2015 Porsche 919 Hybrid Stuttgart. Extensive testing with the second generation of Porsche's Le Mans prototype will begin on January 18, on Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit. As scheduled, this marks the start of the 2015 motorsport season for the Porsche Team. The new Porsche 919 Hybrid has already had its roll-out on the Weissach test track. As a next step, there will be several performance and endurance tests before the WEC season opener on April 12 in Silverstone, Great Britain. The new Porsche 919 Hybrid is a comprehensive evolution of the successful car that made its debut in 2014. It will feature the same innovative drivetrain concept consisting of a 2-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor powering the front wheels, and two energy recovery systems. The new generation car had its first roll-out on December 15, 2014.
Jaguar F-Type squares off against Porsche 911, Aston V8 Vantage with Chris Harris
Fri, 21 Jun 2013Chris Harris is back on the job, taking on really really difficult car questions like: Which enormously sexy and good-to-drive, high-performance convertible is the top of the heap? As one of the hottest cars in the luxury space right now, the Jaguar F-Type S is, of course, in on the action. Competition comes in the form of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster and the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Sun-loving CEOs who despise test-driving need look no further.
Scroll on below for a fully featured (with a running time of more than 20 minutes) comparison video. Harris does his best to entertain - in a typically nitpicky and made-up-British-words fashion - and the moving pictures are lovely to look at. Kick back, pour a pint and get your weekend started off right.
Petrolicious explores long-term living with Porsche's 914/6
Thu, 15 May 2014After its last video starred none other than the spectacular Ferrari 250 GTO, where was there for the video team at Petrolicious to go? Certainly, in the realm of classics, there are only a few other vehicles that can match the badge and pedigree of the ultra-rare Ferrari. Maybe a Jaguar D-Type or an Aston Martin DBR1? No, this latest video doesn't star either of those British icons. It stars an oft-misunderstood, occasionally derided entry from Germany's most sporting manufacturer - Porsche.
Yes, we've gone from a Ferrari 250 GTO to a Porsche 914/6. As is often the case with Petrolicious, though, the story told about the car by its owner are often more important than the make or model of car being highlighted. That's exactly the case here, as Jack Griffin talks about the 38 years he's spent with this particular Porsche.
Having been born into the Volkswagen fold and introduced to Porsche in the best way possible - behind the wheel of a 356 - Griffin has some interesting stories (including his attempt at running the 12 Hours of Sebring), and he knows a fair bit about some of the 914's attributes.
