Bruce Jennings on 2040-cars
Whitehall, Pennsylvania, United States
ATTENTION PORSCHE ENTHUSIASTS:
This van was saved from the crusher. A true barn find. Former Bruce Jennings a/k/a "King Carrera" van/tow vehicle. Bruce bought this van new and owned it from 1967 to 1973. I bought the van from the second owner. He raced against legends such as A.J. Foyt, Sterling Moss, Mario Andretti and Rodger Penske, on such tracks as Sebring, Watkins Glen, LeMans and Daytona. You can look up the article on Bruce in the 1995 Porche Panorama. My intention was to restore this vehicle to its original glory, however, a recent financial obligation has put the brakes on this project. This van, as all barn finds, was said to have run when parked. I have not done anything with it, its rusty but all there. I just want it to go to a good home. I was told that Dave Coleman of West Virginia owns Bruce Jennings 1959 Carrera Speedster, if you are out there, Dave, or anyone that knows him, this would be perfect for you or any fan. Clean Maryland title in hand. The van is in storage just outside of Philadelphia, PA. The van is also being listed locally and may end auction at any time. Call Sam @ 484-375-5667 to buy it now, will end early. |

The 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona: What we learned, what we saw
Tue, 28 Jan 2014Two days after the flag dropped on the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona, people are still trying to figure out what it might portend for the rest of the season. In 24 hours, two minutes and 24 seconds, 695 laps were completed by the car that crossed the line first. During that time, 67 cars began the race, 18 of them retired. There was that accident, and a red flag. There were supposedly slower classes beating supposedly faster classes. There were 16 caution periods, including that yellow flag. And then there was The Decision. And Then The Uproar. And then The Reversal.
There was also some pretty good racing, so let's have one last look at the weekend. Oh, and there was that 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO Series II...
If you want to skip the reading bits and go to the photos, there's a high-res gallery of 158 images above and a couple more below. Enjoy.
40+ cars that barely avoid the gas guzzler tax
Thu, 24 Jul 2014
The Gas Guzzler schedule, with mpg ratings and charges that haven't changed since 1991, lays out which fuel-swillers owe what to Uncle Sam.
I started thinking about the "Gas Guzzler Tax" - considerably less well known as The Energy Tax Act of 1978 - when I was driving Dodge's new Challenger SRT Hellcat last week. Unsurprisingly for a car that can burn 1.5 gallons of gas per minute at max tilt, theoretically able to empty a full tank of premium in about 13 minutes, the Hellcat will be subject to the Gas Guzzler Tax schedule when it goes on sale.
Mark Webber treats Maria Sharapova to a Porsche 918 Spyder joyride
Tue, 29 Apr 2014We don't much like Mark Webber right now. Part of being a racing driver is dealing with promotional stuff. It's not hard to find a driver that can't stand all this nonsense, whether it be promoting a product, meeting investors or attending some obscure event. Even a driver of Webber's caliber - a former Formula One driver for Red Bull Racing and a member of Porsche's factory Le Mans team - has to serve his time at the promo events.
Somehow, though, we don't think the Aussie driver minds this particular promo detail. In the video below, Webber attends the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. He then takes tennis superstar Maria Sharapova out for a spin behind the wheel of the Porsche 918 Spyder. The level of jealousy at the Autoblog office is palpable.
Take a look below for the video. And as we're super jealous of Mr. Webber, hop into Comments and caption the above photo based on what you think he's saying to Maria. Bonus points if you can work "vegemite" into the caption.
