1956 Porsche 356a Coupe on 2040-cars
Raleigh, North Carolina, United States
Matching Numbers Documented with Porsche Certificate of Authenticity Restored and Outstanding Driver Desirable, professionally restored, two owner 356A Porsche. Documented with its Certificate of Authenticity showing that is a Matching Numbers engine and body panels and it was originally offered with a Blaupunkt radio (still in the car, even has shortwave!), the very rare optional clock in the glovebox door and the desirable beehive tail lights. It comes with the original books and manuals, as well as some of the paperwork, dating from 1963. The current owner has had it in his possession since 1970. He drove it until 1972 and it was left in storage untouched until the mid to late 90's, when it underwent a full restoration. Graphite Metallic (5603) was the color choice for this car when it left Germany, but somewhere along the way the paint was changed to Polyantha Red (5602)- a far more eye catching color. The sheet metal stamps indicate that this is the metal work the car was born with. The red paint has served this car well and shows beautifully while still being worry free on the road. Interior appointments are preserved and working properly. Seating has been covered in tan upholstery that shows almost no use and no defects to be noted. Recently - in the past two years - it has had the brakes overhauled, the 4 speed transmission rebuilt, the engine has been refreshed - including the carbs, new tires and the suspension has been replaced. The car has no leaks, funny noises or driving habits. The 1,457 miles on the odometer are miles driven from when the restoration took place. These miles will change, as it is being driven on nice days. As supported by the Porsche certificate of authenticity that accompanies this coupe, the engine bolted in the engine bay was put there by the Porsche factory in 1956. With the original numbers matching engine in place the collectibility of this car is well established. While it is the original engine, it has been carefully overhauled rounding out a nicely restored sports car with plenty of reliable horsepower from the factory unit. Whether you intend to get this coupe out on the road, take it to shows and events, or just enjoy its presence in your collection - any time spent with this car is sure to moments of pure bliss. This is really a no excuses car that I would rate an 8 out of 10. Why pay the crazy money for a car you want to keep in a museum, when you can have one you can drive and enjoy every day? |

Porsche planning something track-focused for Geneva [w/poll]
Thu, Feb 26 2015At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month, Porsche has confirmed that it will be showcasing two potentially exciting new models: One is the new Cayman GT4 we've already seen, but we don't know what the other will be just yet. All the German automaker is saying at the moment is that, "the second new model is another exceptional Porsche that sets new standards on the racetrack" and that "this vehicle confirms the sports car manufacturer's commitment to high performance sports cars that manage a very special link between everyday driving and motorsports." Given those two statements, we can probably rule out a crossover or sedan at one end of the spectrum or a purely competition-spec racer at the other. The likelihood is, then, that Porsche's surprise for Geneva will be the new 911 GT3 RS. But then it could be the Boxster-based convertible counterpart to the Cayman GT4 (whether dubbed Boxster GT4, Boxster Spyder or something else), or even a track-tuned version of the 918 Spyder to take on the McLaren P1 GTR and Ferrari FXX K. We'll just have to sit tight to find out, but you're welcome to read the press release below and tell us what you think Zuffenhausen has in store for us at the Swiss expo this year. Double world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show 2015 Porsche shows two new high-performance cars for the first time Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is celebrating the world premiere of two extreme sports cars at this year's Geneva International Motor Show. The new Cayman GT4 is the first high-performance sports car belonging to the GT family that is based on the mid-engine coupes. Clocking a lap time of seven minutes and 40 seconds on the North Loop of the Nurburgring, the new entry-level model makes a great debut. The second new model is another exceptional Porsche that sets new standards on the racetrack. The world premiere will take place during the Porsche press conference at the Palexpo Arena in Geneva at 11:30 (CET) on March 3, 2015. A live webcast will be available in German and English on: http://porsche.gomexlive.com/. This vehicle confirms the sports car manufacturer's commitment to high performance sports cars that manage to make a very special link between everyday driving and motorsports. These two premieres continue Porsche's tradition of presenting motorsport highlights at the spring car show on the shores of Lake Geneva. The 911 GT3, 918 Spyder and 919 Hybrid all celebrated their debuts in Geneva in recent years.
McQueen's Porsche 917 from Le Mans races to the auction block
Mon, 23 Jun 2014Steve McQueen may have been the headline actor of the motorsport cult classic film Le Mans, but we all know who the real star was. Or rather, what: the Porsche 917. More specifically, it was the Gulf-liveried #22 - not McQueen's #21 - that won the race, making it one of the most iconic cars ever to drive across the silver screen. And now it's going up for auction.
This 1969 Porsche 917K, chassis 917-024, has a storied history both on and off the screen, even if it didn't win any (off-screen) races of note. This example was the first 917 to be campaigned in an actual race when Porsche handed it to Jo Siffert to drive against the Ferrari 312P and Ford GT40 at the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 Km race in 1969. Siffert found the early example too unstable and ultimately drove an earlier 908 to the checkered flag, but after 917-024 set the fastest time at the following year's Le Mans test day, Siffert acquired it outright.
The Swiss racing driver loaned the car to Solar Productions for use in the film, after which it returned to Siffert's collection until he was killed in an F1 exposition race at Brands Hatch in 1971. In a testament to how much he loved the car, it was 917-024 that lead the funeral procession. The car subsequently fell off the radar until it resurfaced in 2001 as one of the greatest barn finds of the new millennium. Now fully restored and resplendent in its original baby blue and orange, 917-024 is headed to the auction block at Pebble Beach where you can be sure that Gooding & Company will bring in a suitably high price for arguably the most iconic example of one of the most iconic Porsches of all time.
Audi RS7 vs. Porsche Panamera Turbo, which would you pick? [w/poll]
Wed, 08 Jan 2014We live in a blessed time - a time when you can buy not just one, but two (or three, or four) monstrously powerful, blazingly fast four-doors that can't only keep up with modern supercars, but in some instances, will outperform them as well. Two of the finest are the Audi RS7 and the refreshed Porsche Panamera Turbo, and Motor Trend has been messing around with the both of them in this comparison video.
MT provides a comprehensive and entertaining look at the RS7 and the turbocharged Panamera as they go through a battery of tests, before getting tossed about on both the road and the track. Starring flip-flop aficionado Jonny Lieberman, it's a must-watch, whether you're in the market for one of the two super sedans or merely want to see the former Autoblog editor again.
After having a look at the video, register a vote for the car you'd park in your driveway in our poll. Hop below for the full video from the team at Motor Trend.
