1978 Pontiac Trans Am W72 on 2040-cars

Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, United States

1978 Pontiac Trans Am W72 project.

The car is an original W72 6.6L 400ci but does not have the original block.  It has a 500557 casting on the block which I believe is a 1976 motor.  The intake is an Edelbrock Torker with a Quadrajet carburetor (which may need to be rebuilt or adjusted, has issues starting when temperature is cold).  The heads on the car are #16 and I believe they are a 1968 casting but not sure.  As for internals I have no idea what was done or modified but it runs fine and drives.  The 4 speed manual transmission works and I believe it is the original Borg-Warner.  the exhaust is newer and in great shape but I don't know any details about brands or sizes. The rear axle is from a 1979 WS-6 Trans Am and it has new disc brakes all around the car (includes new rotor, calipers, and pads I put on last winter).  I don't know what the gears are in the rear end since it was on the car when I bought it.  It still needs the emergency brake assembly (Someone removed it when they put the new axle in).  I have suspicion that the car is a WS-6 car due to the 15x8 snowflake rims and the heavy duty sway bars but I don't have any verification.  The car has 255/60r15 tires that are in great shape the whole way around.  I found out that the car does have manual steering (I believe the previous owner removed the power steering as a plan to eventually tub the car and never gave me the original steering box).  The paint on the car is okay but will need repainted. The car was originally white with red interior but was changed years ago (somebody did a great job painting the car but now its age can be seen with the scratches and small chips).  The car is in great shape and there aren't many dings or chips, but there is a small rust bubble on the lower drivers door skin, it is hard to notice unless you are looking for it.  There is no bird graphic on the car but I did buy flat black graphics to use until I would've had the car painted. I only put on the Trans Am graphic on the rear spoiler to see how it would look.  The rest of the graphics come with the car.  The interior will need attention, there is no headliner, the dash has some small cracks, and the center console isn't in great shape.  There are racing buckets in the car and I bought some seats from a 1977 Trans Am to replace the racing seats that also come with the car.  The 1977 buckets are in good shape but show a little bit of age. Would be great if reupholstered.  There is a CD player in the car that works but doesn't really fit the style of the car.  The carpet is new and there is a new rubber seal kit for the windows that hasn't been installed yet.  The original seals are a little dry rotted.  The glass is in great shape.  The trunk pan is solid.  The trunk lock is missing but still latches fine.  I am only selling since I no longer have the means to restore the car and like to see it being enjoyed rather than sit in my garage for years. Overall the car is a great base for a cruiser or a total restore. I think I covered everything I know about the car and if you have any questions about the car please ask.  The car is currently titled in New York but is clear and in hand.  The car will need to be trailered home as it has been sitting for years in my garage and will need inspected before being deemed safe to drive.  A $500 non-refundable deposit is required within 24 hours and must be paid in full within seven days of auction end. Thank you for looking and happy bidding!

Hurst Edition Trans Am proves the Screaming Chicken will rise from the ashes

Wed, 31 Oct 2012

It seems the Pontiac Trans Am steadfastly refuses to die. Ever since Chevrolet was granted a retrofied Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang, Pontiac lovers have lamented the loss of this 1970s icon. And, looking at the Hurst Edition from Trans Am Depot, shown here at the 2012 SEMA Show, may explain what all the fuss is about.
It's not going to appeal to everyone's muscle-car tastes, but there's certainly room for a brash-and-bold black-and-gold Special Edition in many a Trans Am lover's garage. After all, if you want the keys to a custom pony car, you'll certainly get noticed in this one. If this scheme isn't your bag,, you can alternatively order your Hurst Edition in white and gold or silver and black. Oh, and don't forget a color-coordinated Screaming Chicken on the hood.
No matter which way you choose to go, your inner Burt Reynolds will appreciate the Eibach suspension kit, forged wheels with Pirelli PZero tires, functional shaker hood, fender air extractors, rear spoiler and, of course, a Hurst shifter inside. The interior is emblazoned with all manner of special touches, including a Hurst dash plate and T/A stitching on the Katzkin two-tone leather seats.

GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners

Fri, 28 Oct 2011

This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand.
The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007. Most are turning to vehicles from Chevrolet, especially during January and February of 2011, when GM incentivized Pontiac owners to stay under the umbrella. Those moves seem to have worked, and 28.1 percent of Pontiac owners trading up made the jump into a Bowtie.
Buyers that have gone elsewhere have largely stayed loyal to Domestic automakers, with Ford picking up the most conquests from Pontiac, with 9.4 percent switching. Toyota and Honda picked up 7.4 percent of the pool of former Pontiac drivers. The numbers are defying any predictions that Pontiac buyers would completely exit the General Motors fold, and have climbed up closer to parity with the retention figures of other GM brands from a 2009 low of only 16 percent retention.

Watch this garbage truck consume a Pontiac Grand Am

Wed, 15 May 2013

When an old car or truck offers its dying breath in your driveway and you just don't have the financial or mechanical wherewithal to resuscitate it yet again, you traditionally have to go to the trouble of calling a flatbed or a tow truck to come haul it away. That usually helps to put a few bucks in your wallet and helps recycle some of the vehicle's parts, but the transaction doesn't seem as final or perversely satisfying as the dispatch service that this New Way Cobra Magnum garbage truck offers.
Okay, okay, so this refuse hauler isn't actually designed for this sort of thing, but it's oddly comforting to know that a sanitation truck can compact a hapless Pontiac Grand Am into oblivion. Next time, we won't feel so guilty about slipping that rusty charcoal grille onto the curb next to the cans on garbage day. Watch the carnage by scrolling below.
