Pontiac Grand Am Coupe 1979 - 455! Extremely Rare Professionally Done on 2040-cars
Farmington, Michigan, United States
1979 Pontiac Grand Am Coupe 455/4 bbl You’re looking at a very rare Pontiac Grand Am Coupe only 4021 of these were made in 1979. And what’s rarest of all is it has a 455 in the engine bay! If the factory would have built a car like this, this would be it. This is a true fast, sleeper. This car is ready to rock and roll for cruise nights this summer or the drag strip. A true Muscle Rod that looks great and gets loads of attention. You can get in it and drive it now! This car is a real cool sleeper… At last year’s dream cruise this car got rave reviews from the audience as it cruised down Woodward Avenue. It has a 455 V8, .030 over, which makes it a 462 Cu in. ? torque monster (replacing the factory 301). It was professionally rebuilt (I have some of the receipts, I did not do the rebuild). The Pontiac engine code is confirmed to be a YY with the big value 6X heads. All true Muscle Rod go-fast parts. The engine is matched to a turbo 350 transmission with a shift kit. You lay rubber in second gear, as you nail it. Driving the power to the ground is the heavy-duty GM 12 bolt posi- rear end. It is fueled through an Edelbrock 1604 carb sitting atop an Edelbrock aluminum high-rise manifold. It has a brand-new professionally installed dual exhaust system. What a great rumble from this new 2.5” exhaust system, with large diameter full length headers from MAD DOG Headers. The front tires are new and the rears have good tread life, and are BFG 245x15’s. The car handles very well, nice and tight. The radiator is upgraded to a heavy duty aluminum radiator. The battery has just been replaced. The big sway bar holds the car in the corners. This Pontiac is very dependable and the car runs and drives is you would expect from a great cruiser or drag/street racer. Take on the Power Tour this year and be one of the very rare people with the Pontiac version of the Malibu. Everything works on this car as it should, including the AC. There is some surface rust underneath the trim around the rear quarter windows and, but there is no rust through anywhere! There is some bubbling on the passenger side rear quarter about the size of a quarter. Nothing major. I believe the rust proofing job preserved this car. The undercarriage of this car is extremely clean. The interior was redone last summer (2013) with new painted trim ( Carmine Red), new headliner and carpet. Everything works on this car, just like from the factory! The interior is all factory original except for an aftermarket period radio. The seats look great ( driver seat needs minor stitching) and the dash is perfect, no cracks rips or tears. The car comes with some original service manuals and some paperwork, and service records, which date back to the mid-1990s. This is an awesome Muscle Rod YOU must see to appreciate. I highly recommend you come and take a look at this car and you will fall in love with it. You will not be disappointed. This car is ready for cruising or the drag strip, or both… A whole lot of fun in store for the purchaser of this rare Pontiac… GRRRRRRRRRR, it just needs a tiger tail. Toyota urges owners of old Corolla, Matrix and RAV4 models to park them until airbags are replaced
Mon, Jan 29 2024DETROIT — Toyota and General Motors are telling the owners of about 61,000 older Corolla, RAV4, Matrix/ Pontiac Vibe models to stop driving them because their Takata airbag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel. The urgent warning Monday covers: Certain Corolla compact cars and Matrix hatchbacks from the 2003 and 2004 model years. RAV4 small SUVs from 2004 and 2005. Also covered are about 11,000 Pontiac Vibes from 2003 and 2004, which are essentially the same as the Matrix and were made at the same California factory. Most of the vehicles are in the U.S. “If the airbag deploys, a part inside is more likely to explode and shoot sharp metal fragments, which could cause serious injury or death to the driver or passengers,” Toyota said in a statement. Owners can go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their cars are affected. If you're not the original owner of the vehicle, the manufacturer's recall letter might not reach you, so be sure to do the VIN check. The recalled RAV4s have Takata driver's airbags while the Corolla and Matrix models have them on the passenger side. The Corolla and Matrix also are under a separate recall because their airbags can be deployed without a crash, the company said. Both companies said owners should contact a local dealer instead of driving the cars in for repairs. Dealers will provide options such as mobile repair, towing the car to a dealer, or vehicle pickup and delivery. Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate airbags in a crash. But the chemical propellant can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel. At least 26 people have been killed in the U.S. by Takata inflators since May 2009, and at least 30 have died worldwide including people in Malaysia and Australia. In addition, about 400 people have been injured. The exploding airbags sent Takata of Japan into bankruptcy. The potential for a dangerous malfunction led to the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history. About 100 million inflators were recalled worldwide. Recalls Pontiac Toyota Takata airbag recall
Junkyard Gem: 1987 Pontiac Firebird
Sat, May 9 2020From 1967 through 2002, the Pontiac Division offered the Firebird, close sibling to the Chevrolet Camaro. By the third generation, which debuted for the 1982 model year, it became more difficult to tell the two F-body cars apart at a glance and the Pontiac-exclusive engines of the earlier years disappeared, but the Firebird still retained its own personality and its own position in the GM marketing hierarchy. I still find the occasional 1982-1992 Camaro as I search car graveyards for interesting stuff, but the corresponding Firebirds have become scarce in recent years. Here's a base-engine-equipped '87, its Bright Red paint (yes, that was the official name for the color) faded by the Colorado sun as it awaits the crusher. Firebird shoppers had their choice of three engines in 1987: A 5.7-liter Chevy V8 (210 hp), a 5.0-liter Chevy V8 (205 hp) and the same 2.8-liter 60° V6 that went into the Fiero and countless front-drive GM sedans (135 hp). This car has the base engine. The third-gen F-body didn't weigh much (3,105 pounds for the '87 with six-banger, about what a 2020 Corolla weighs), so 135 horses was tolerable. Plenty of these cars got T-5 5-speed manual transmissions, but this one got the two-pedal setup. Camaro wheels, of course. Our Friend the Carburetor didn't disappear from new cars until the early 1990s in the United States, though electronic fuel injection had become very commonplace by 1987. Still, GM considered this car's EFI worth a door-handle brag. It's not worth fixing up a mashed six-cylinder third-gen Firebird, so we can see the route this car took to its final parking space. Junkyard Gem: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire coupe
Thu, Feb 21 2019In a few months, we'll reach the tenth anniversary of GM's axing of the venerable Pontiac brand. G6s, Vibes, and Matizes continued to be built until 2010, but I'm noticing a marked decrease in discarded Pontiacs lately, as I perform my junkyardy rituals. Here's a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, photographed in a Colorado wrecking yard. The Sunfire was the near-identical sibling to the Chevrolet Cavalier, based on the long-running (1982-2005) J-Body platform. It was cheap and simple, looked pretty sporty (at least in coupe form), and every parts store in North America carried just about everything you'd need to keep one running. This coupe had to compete for sales not only with a vast and menacing array of imports but with GM's own Saturn SC2 (not to mention the Cavalier itself). Meanwhile, the J platform was showing its age more with each passing year. This car sports what must have been the complete line of Fatal Clothing bomber-nose-art/skate-punk/gang-tag-influenced decals, circa 2010. I actually photographed this car back in 2011, then misplaced the image files until last week. The stickers are very California-centric for a Colorado car, but then plenty of Californians — including me— move here. When you know you're a car's final owner, it's a lot easier to whip out the paint pens and redecorate the interior. Power came from the engine GM developed for the very first J-Bodies: the 2.2-liter 122 pushrod four-cylinder. 2002 was the last model year for 122-powered Sunfires and Cavaliers; the most affordable S-10/Sonoma/Hombre trucks got this engine through 2003. It even came with a remote, so bad Midwestern farmgirls could make quick getaways when caught in the act by enraged broom-wielding mothers.
