1970 Pontiac GranTurismoOmolgato "GTO" 4-speed Convertible      This is a true 242  4-SPEED GTO Convertible!!!!! It doesn't get much better than this!!!!! 1970 was the pinnacle of the muscle car era! This has got to be one of the most beautiful color combinations on a muscle car ever! This is your chance to purchase one of the most highly desirable and sought after muscle cars on the planet! This GTO truly is the essence of the Widetrack Pontiac experience!! It originally was bought new according to the dealer invoice from Alabama. Apparently it had been sitting in the AutoWorks Classic Car Museum from 1995 until I made the purchase in Hollywood, Florida in 2010. The title is clean and clear in the previous owners name from Tennessee. I was told that the mileage is correct at a mere 51,000 original miles. This classic old goat has always spent its life down south, and was obviously well taken care of. The original paint was just a little faded, so all the panels were removed, and meticulously painted off the car before being reinstalled. This is an original Code 75 Cardinal Red GTO with a factory 4-speed, and matching red interior verified by to the Pontiac Historical Society. It was painted with 3 coats of basecoat followed by 3 coats of one of the most expensive clear coats available to bring out the beautiful luster as seen in the pictures. The paint work alone on this car cost over $7500. All the body panels are original to the car, as well as the original floors, trunk, and frame which are all in very nice solid condition. There is one very minor patch on the passenger floor about 4"x7" in size, and that repair was done correctly to last. This paint work is virtually show quality, and the body is laser straight. A fresh brand new white convertible top was recently installed with a new glass back window, all new padding, and a brand new well liner. The interior has brand new exact match factory seat covers, all new side panels, brand new carpeting, and new door sills. I have to say that it is so nice to step into a 43 year old car where mostly everything in sight is brand spanking new! All the  seat belts are  in place and fully functional. All of the rubber gaskets were replaced at the time of paint including the door gaskets, window seals, and trunk gasket. The doors open and close like when this car was brand new, and they have dual sport mirrors with the drivers side being remote controlled. The speedometer, odometer, and in-dash tachometer all work as they should. There are still a full set of four T-3 headlights and bright lights in the very nice original endure front nose. The correct 1970 tail light lenses are brand new, so they really light up nicely. The engine compartment was detailed to look like this car came straight from the factory. The original dual snorkel air cleaner has a new chrome lid to really brighten up this Big Block! The dual exhaust is in good condition with new dual chrome exhaust tips. This engine is powered by an AC Delco battery with new terminal ends. I tried to replace all of the original factory decals that appeared when this car rolled from the factory to the showroom for delivery back in 1970. According to the previous owner there is a distinct possibility this car has all of its original components from top to bottom other than the items I've replaced. That knowledge is considered third party information. Nevertheless, I'm sure the new owner will be very happy to show or drive this car anywhere with pride. All of the chrome is in good drivers quality condition to excellent condition.  This original red on red GTO is perfect for the guy or girl who had one in high school and would like to revisit the past, or for someone who simply wants to drive around to enjoy steering their investment while their money grows. It's a wonderful car to take to your local drive-in movie theater or cruise night, It's also a great car to take to your high school re-union to remind your classmates how cool you really are. New spark plugs, a new oil filter, and a fresh oil change were done to prepare this car for sale. The alternator was replaced, and the alternator and power steering belts were also replaced. This super rare goat has factory air conditioning including all the components visible to make it work. The compressor spins freely, although I never put an A/C belt on, and I'm sure it is still on the R-12 system. Making the air conditioning work will be left up to the winning bidder if they so desire. It is just nice to have that option available. The original options include power steering, power brakes, in dash tachometer, power convertible top, bucket seats, and  the factory 4-speed with the console. This classic GTO is steered by the deluxe sport wheel. It rides on a set of four Firestone raised white lettered P225 70R/14" steel belted radial tires. They are mounted on a set of four detailed original 14" inch Pontiac Rallye wheels  with all four original black PMD center caps, and all new correct Pontiac chrome lug nuts with the black insert. The original AM radio is long gone. Currently there is an AM/FM Cassette player in that spot, but is not hooked up, so the sound system will be left to the choice of the winning bidder. There were no speaker holes cut anywhere in this new interior. I know that is very important to Pontiac enthusiasts. The very nice original trunk floor was coated with factory AC Delco black and aqua spatter spray, and then clear coated to seal the spatter spray. A new trunk floor mat was added under the nicely restored jack and crow bar. A full size Rallye wheel with a matching Firestone raised white lettered spare tire comes inside the trunk just in case there is a mishap on the road. With a quick tire change you can be back on your way looking complete in minutes. Everywhere this goat is driven people are attracted to it like a magnet. You have to be prepared to be the spectacle of the neighborhood, because everyone will know who's coming. These cars are becoming harder and harder to come across. The southern climate always kept these cars in much better condition than your average 43 year old car. A great deal of time, money, and effort went into making the car that is listed in this description. What you see is exactly what you get. Plain and simple!! Take advantage of this chance to finally own your dream car. This is an investment that has shown to consistently appreciate in value with each quarter. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide has the current values that anyone can check on-line for a genuine 242 code 1970 Pontiac GTO 4-speed convertible with the options listed on this car priced at $96,960 in the highest condition, $61,440 in average condition, and $20,320 in the lowest condition. I believe that anyone who sees this extremely rare GTO would have to agree that this car is in much better than average condition. This is a prime opportunity to own a piece of muscle car history at a reasonable price. I tried to describe all of the pertinent information, so any potential bidder can make the most informed decision possible before placing their bid. If anyone feels there may be something that was missed in the description, please ask as many questions as you like or call Ian at 773/551-5075. If you don't ask, you won't know! All questions will be answered in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. A car that came from the factory with this color combination, and a 4-speed is next to impossible to find. This is a quick 5-day  "No Reserve" auction that will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening June 2nd, 2013. Start making yourself some wonderful new memories!! When was the last time you ever saw an original factory ordered Red on Red 1970 GTO Convertible with a 4 speed?? This could be the dream car you have been waiting for! You have to be an extrovert to own a car of this nature, and have a good strong arm for waving at people! Thank you for taking the time to view my auction!!  Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!

Porsche Boxster Spyder to get GT3's 4.0-liter flat six?

Sun, Feb 4 2018

It's been a merry-go-round the past few months, the rumormill focused on what will power the next Porsche Boxster Spyder. First came hearsay of a flat-six going into the special edition of a model line known for its turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Then came tattling that the flat-six in question was the naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter from the 911 GT3. A couple of weeks ago we wrote " we'd be surprised if Porsche packed anything other than a turbocharged flat-four under the skin." But Autocar has a new report that, indeed, a downtuned version of the 500-horsepower 4.0-liter from the GT3's rump will move to the Boxster Spyder's midsection. The Autocar piece follows a Wheels magazine article from last November, and the prediction isn't outrageous. When Car and Driver reviewed the last Boxster Spyder, it wrote, "the hand-me-down six comes from the older 911 Carrera S, not to be confused with the new turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six that powers the refreshed 911." If we can believe a recent report from Automobile about the 992-series 911 due later this year, the same thing is happening: The 991.2-series GT3 bequeaths its powerplant to the smaller sibling, and the 992-series GT3 moves to a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo flat-six with around 550 hp. Autocar quotes Andreas Preuninger, the Porsche engineer leading the development of all of these wunderkinds, saying of the Boxster earlier this year, "Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs. ... [We] think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo." We'll guess that means, by inference, that the GT3 is about to age out of naturally-aspirated university. The limited-edition Boxster Spyder might carry the torch with the 4.0-liter, with output somewhere around 430 hp. The Cayman GT4 could do the same. Or, who knows, an evolution of the 375-hp, 3.8-liter flat-six in the previous Boxster Spyder might burble out of left field. We expect to see the Boxster Spyder late this year. Until then, we'll wait to see what the merry-go-round says next time the Zuffenhausen horse comes around. What car brand should come back?

Fri, Apr 7 2017

Congratulations, wishful thinker! You've been granted one wish by the automotive genie or wizard or leprechaun or whoever has been gifted with that magical ability. You get to pick one expired, retired or fired automotive brand and resurrect it from its heavenly peace! But which one? That's a tough decision and not one to be made lightly. As we know from car history, the landscape is littered with failed brands that just didn't have what it took to cut it in the dog-eat-dog world of vehicle design, engineering and marketing. So many to choose from! Because I am not a car historian, I'll leave it to a real expert to present a complete list of history's automotive misses from which you can choose, if you're a stickler about that sort of thing. And since I'm most familiar with post-World War II cars and brands, that's what I'm going to stick to (although Maxwell, Cord and some others could make strong arguments). So, with the parameters established, let's get started, shall we? Hudson: I admit, I really don't know a lot about Hudson, except that stock car drivers apparently did pretty well with them back in the day, and Paul Newman played one in the first Cars movie. But really, isn't that enough to warrant consideration? Frankly, I think the Paul Newman connection is reason enough. What other actor who drove race cars was cooler? James Dean? Steve McQueen? James Garner? Paul Walker? But, I digress. That's a story for another day. Plymouth: As the scion of a Dodge family (my grandfather had a Dodge truck, and my mom had not one, but two Dodge Darts – the rear-wheel-drive ones with slant sixes in them, not the other one they don't make any more), I tend to think of Plymouth as the "poor man's Dodge." But then you have to consider the many Hemi-powered muscle cars sold under the Plymouth brand, such as the Road Runner, the GTX, the Barracuda, and so on. Was there a more affordable muscle car than Plymouth? When you place it in the context of "affordable muscle," Plymouth makes a pretty strong argument for reanimation. Oldsmobile: When I was a teenager, all the cool kids had Oldsmobile Cutlasses, the downsized ones that came out in 1978. At one point, the Olds Cutlass was the hottest selling car in the land, if you can believe that. Then everybody started buying Honda Civics and Accords and Toyota Corollas and Camrys, and you know the rest. But going back farther, there's the 442 – perhaps Olds' finest hour when it came to muscle cars.

Detroit City Council vetoes Autorama stunt, objects to Confederate flag

Wed, Feb 20 2019

Detroit's Autorama hot rod show will stage its 67th annual event next month, and wants to kick off with Burt Reynolds tribute. The plan is to re-create the Mulberry Bridge jump from " Smokey and the Bandit" using a movie-correct 1977 Pontiac Trans Am. But the Detroit City Council voted 7-1 to prohibit the jump. Why? Because the Trans Am's front license plate holder displays the former Georgia state flag, a portion of which is the Confederate national flag, and the city council doesn't like that. In the movie, Bo "Bandit" Darville was a Georgia driving legend, and the flag on the car was Georgia's flag at the time. Councilman Scott Benson laid out the council's position when he said that the car "still proudly flies a Confederate flag, which is a symbol of oppression, slavery, as well as home-bred American terrorism. So this body said we are not going to support that type of symbolism nor the audacity to support that type of activity in the city of Detroit." It seems part of the council's ire comes from the same event two years ago. A stunt group called the Northeast Ohio Dukes re-created a "Dukes of Hazzard" jump in 2017 using a series-correct 1969 Dodge Charger, complete with a Confederate flag on the roof. Benson said the stunt group "expressly said they would not display that [Confederate flag] symbol during the jump." Not only was it displayed, but when driver Raymond Kohn gave interviews after the jump, his driving suit featured the Stainless Banner on the collar. Seems the council has been grinding its axe in silence for two years. Now Benson accuses Autorama of "a history of supporting images and symbols of racism, oppression, and white supremacy." Autorama is certain to take place March 1-3 at Cobo Center. This year's show will have around 800 cars on display, along with a special exhibit of 17 low riders and a Batmobile built by Flint native Carl Casper. Even if the Bandit car doesn't make the jump, the Trans Am and other memorabilia from the film will be there. A spokeswoman for Autorama said, "We are continuing to work to try to resolve this with the city."
