1968 GTO Convertible Restored numbers matching Awesome GTO!

Up for auction is my gorgeous 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible.  It is a true 24267 (350 HP) car with numbers matching 400 motor and Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission.  This car looks great, runs strong, sounds fantastic and gets shouts of approval wherever I go.

Here are some particulars…

In 2007 (about 8,300 miles ago) the car was fully restored including:

·       Body thoroughly disassembled (shop said it had all original sheet metal with stampings), refurbished and put back together.

·       Beautiful new red paint and new white top.

·       Engine was torn down and rebuilt including new pistons, rings, Lunati cam, and many other parts and improvements.

·       The new top also had new pads, weather strip, frame, switch, and motor installed.

·       The trunk compartment was detailed to look brand new.

·       The undercarriage is beautiful with spotless floor pans, and a clean, rust-free frame that was bead blasted then primed and had chassis black applied.

·       Interior is show ready with new seat covers, new carpeting, and correct date coded front and rear seat belts, etc.

Also the car shows two sets of wheels and tires in the pictures.  A set of like new bias ply red-line tires on beautiful Rally II wheels or a brand new set of BF Goodrich TA Radials on Cragar S/S wheels.  If you win the auction you pick the Rally IIs or the Cragars, if the winning bid is over $36,000 you get both sets.

The Hurst His n Hers shifter works perfectly with the rebuilt in 2012 Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission for crisp shifts and robust acceleration.

This great GTO comes with some Pontiac Historical Services paperwork, the 1968 owner's manual and some restoration receipts as well as a laminated reproduction window sticker.  The VIN is 242678B119655.  A black convertible boot also goes to the auction winner as well as a few small extra parts and paraphernalia and two sets of keys.

This car is ready to enjoy.  The only glaring weakness is the vent windows' chrome needs to be re-done.    This is a 45 year old car that appears to be in great condition for its age, but it is 45 years old.  Feel free to e-mail questions and I’ll do my best to answer them, or better yet, come to Rochester, NY to see the car first hand or get an independent inspection done to see what a great ride this GTO really is.  The fair reserve on this car as well as the "Buy It Now" price are indicative of the value of this beautiful classic car.

This GTO Convertible is being sold as is, where is with no warranty, expressed written or implied. The seller shall not be responsible for the authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty of any type.  Any descriptions or representations are for identification purposes only. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have thoroughly inspected the vehicle and to have satisfied his or her self as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller has and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects associated with this vehicle at the buyer's request prior to the close of sale. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs needed to the vehicle.

The following terms of sale apply:  Payment in cash, certified check, or bank transfer within seven days of the close of the auction.  All funds must be in US dollars only. Please be sure to have full payment and/or approved financing in place before making your final bid.  The successful high bidder will submit a minimum of a $2,000 non-refundable deposit via Paypal or bank wire transfer within 2 business days of the close of the auction to secure the vehicle.  All financial transactions must be completed before delivery of the vehicle.

The vehicle is in Webster, NY (a suburb of Rochester, NY) and is available for pick up by carrier or by the new owner.  The new owner is responsible for all travel arrangements for his or her self and the vehicle.  I would suggest driving the car home or enclosed carrier transportation.

The vehicle is available for sale locally and the auction may be ended at any time.

Good Luck!

The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land

Thu, Oct 15 2015

Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top. Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Tue, Jun 19 2018

For General Motors, the W platform just kept giving and giving and giving for decade after decade, serving as the basis of Buick Regals, Oldsmobile Intrigues, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, and many, many more models. The final and most powerful Pontiac W-Body, the sixth-generation Grand Prix GTP, rolled off assembly lines for the 1997 through 2003 model years. Here's one in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard. GM bolted the supercharged 3800 V6 into vast numbers of cars during this era, providing a deep reservoir of cheap blowers for unwise high-boost projects. 240 front-tire-charring horses, complete with a Roots-type blower scream from the Eaton supercharger under the hood. I see plenty of blown 3800s during my junkyard travels, from the Bonneville SSEi to the Oldsmobile LSS. Depressingly, GM stopped putting manual transmissions in the Grand Prix during the 1993 model year, so '01 GTP owners had to take the four-speed slushbox. This one came close to the magic 200,000-mile mark, but fell 25,000 short. The interior took a beating during its life, ending its time on the road with shredded upholstery and dirty panels. Seven-band graphic equalizers were all the rage during the 1980s, but GM kept the tradition alive into our current century. This content is hosted by a third party. Junkyard Gem: 1997 Pontiac Sunfire SE Convertible

Sun, Mar 5 2023

For the entire 24-year production run of the GM J platform (best known for the Chevrolet Cavalier), the Pontiac Division offered new J-Body cars for sale in the United States. First there was the J2000, followed in quick succession by the 2000, 2000 Sunbird and Sunbird. The Sunbird stuck around until the Cavalier got a major redesign for the 1995 model year, at which point Pontiac changed the car's name to Sunfire. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those early Sunfires, a top-of-the-line SE convertible with the optional big engine and manual transmission. The Sunfire was an extremely close sibling to the same-year Cavalier (by the late 1980s, all the other US-market GM divisions had dropped their J-cars, which meant no more Skyhawks, Cimarrons or Firenzas), quite difficult to distinguish from its near-twin at a glance. The base engine for the 1997 Sunfire convertible was the pushrod 2.2-liter straight-four that powered so many J-bodies of the 1990s. That engine produced just 120 gnashing, valve-floating horsepower, not much by late-1990s standards. For a mere 450 additional dollars, however, the 2.4-liter Twin Cam engine and its high-revving 150 horses could be had by '97 Sunfire buyers. That's what's in this car. This is one of the members of the Oldsmobile Quad 4 family, though some fanatics will yell at you if you apply that name to the versions that don't have big QUAD 4 lettering cast into the valve cover. This is the most powerful engine ever used in production Sunfires. For 1997, Pontiac offered a four-speed automatic transmission for no extra cost in the Sunfire convertible. Buyers of all other Sunfire models that year had to shell out either $550 or $810 ($1,026 or $1,511 in 2023 dollars) for a two-pedal rig. That means that the buyer of this car really wanted the five-speed manual transmission (or just hungered for the $810 credit offered in the fine print for takers of the manual). Plenty of free-breathing engine power, five-on-the-floor driving enjoyment and the open skies above. What a fun car! This one made it to nearly 180,000 miles. For this car with the Quad 4 under the hood and a clutch pedal on the floor, the MSRP was $18,539 (about $34,584 today). Its Cavalier LS convertible twin with the same engine/transmission setup cost $17,365 ($32,394 now). This car has a bunch of options, including the 15" Rally aluminum wheels, so the out-the-door price would have been higher. The last year for the Sunfire was 2005, same as the Cavalier.
