Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Tue, Jun 19 2018

For General Motors, the W platform just kept giving and giving and giving for decade after decade, serving as the basis of Buick Regals, Oldsmobile Intrigues, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, and many, many more models. The final and most powerful Pontiac W-Body, the sixth-generation Grand Prix GTP, rolled off assembly lines for the 1997 through 2003 model years. Here's one in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard. GM bolted the supercharged 3800 V6 into vast numbers of cars during this era, providing a deep reservoir of cheap blowers for unwise high-boost projects. 240 front-tire-charring horses, complete with a Roots-type blower scream from the Eaton supercharger under the hood. I see plenty of blown 3800s during my junkyard travels, from the Bonneville SSEi to the Oldsmobile LSS. Depressingly, GM stopped putting manual transmissions in the Grand Prix during the 1993 model year, so '01 GTP owners had to take the four-speed slushbox. This one came close to the magic 200,000-mile mark, but fell 25,000 short. The interior took a beating during its life, ending its time on the road with shredded upholstery and dirty panels. Seven-band graphic equalizers were all the rage during the 1980s, but GM kept the tradition alive into our current century. This content is hosted by a third party. The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land

Thu, Oct 15 2015

Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top. How to turn a Pontiac Fiero into a trackday car

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Imagine hitting the track in a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe that's affordable and has pretty good parts availability. It might sound like a pipe dream, but it's actually quite possible, if you're willing to think a little outside the box. The Pontiac Fiero is out there just waiting for a little work to turn it into a competent racing machine.
Think about it for a second. Of course, we would all like to be snaking through the curves in something exotic, but what happens when you crash or something breaks? The bills are going to mount up quickly. However, if you ball up a Fiero at the track, as long as you're not hurt, then it's not a huge tragedy.
That's basically the story of Steven Snyder in a new video from Drive starring Matt Farah. Snyder wanted to go to the track cheaply and ended up with an awesome little Fiero with a huge wing and a claimed 220 horsepower at the wheels thanks to a V6 from a Chevrolet Lumina. Check out the video to see how this pint-size Pontiac performs.

DESCRIPTION
Significant changes to the 1965 Pontiac GTO included the famous stacked headlights, simulated hood scoops, slightly longer body, better breathing engine that produced more horsepower, improved brakes, and stiffer suspension! This paved the way for several more successful years, and Pontiac development designated the GTO its own model series in 1966!

We are excited to offer another beautiful vehicle from a local collector who strives to bring out the most from his vehicles! This stunning 1965 Pontiac GTO Hardtop is finished in factory code correct Burgundy (NN) over Black interior (213-30)! As with all of his cars in his garage, they have been upgraded with modern day goodies to make them not just superb straight line muscle cars as the days when they were new, they now perform as track-ready & corner carving race cars! Under the hood of this GTO lies a performance built 455ci V8 fitted with the famous Tri-power carburetion with steel pan Ram Air Induction system! If you look closely at the original “faux” air inlets on the hood, you will now find the individual louvers painstakingly trimmed to be functional to allow full air flow to the carburetors! The original Muncie 4-speed manual transmission was upgraded with an AutoGear aluminum replacement for their expertise in improving all internals to maximum level performance without changing the exterior appearance of the original case. The rear end was upgraded with a Moser 12-Bolt fitted with 3.55 Limited Slip gearing! This outstanding drivetrain produces an estimated 500+ horsepower for you to pound the ground, but will still drive you anywhere you wish to go with ease!

Bringing the entire track ready package together is a full Hotchkis suspension that consists of tubular front upper & lower control arms, front coil springs, performance rear shocks, huge front & rear HO sway bars, and more! The braking system is Aerospace Components 4-wheel power disc brakes with oversized vented rotors and aluminum calipers! The power steering upgraded with an AGR quick ratio steering box, exhaust built with ceramic coated headers, Pypes 3” tubes and mufflers, crossover pipe, and electric cut-outs for full power and sound!

At a glance, this gorgeous Pontiac GTO maintains a largely original appearance which was key to the owner! The period correctness, but present day drivability and responsiveness, was a task not easily achieved. The extensive labor hours, testing, tuning, and correcting make this car irreplaceable for the asking price!! If you consider the factory options that also include functional air conditioning, rally gauges with dash tachometer, original wood steering wood, AM/FM radio rebuilt with modern internals, under hood light, power steering, and much more, then add in the Ron Davis racing radiator with dual electric fans, Crane high output ignition system; aluminum gas tank with sump system, electric pump and filter; custom 16” cast aluminum “Kidney bean” style wheels with open lug nuts, Lakewood scatter shield, SFI-approved flywheel, 3” racing lap belts, and on and on, this car’s build cost is far surpassed when compared to today’s asking price!

This is a streetwise GTO with a perfect stance sitting still, brilliant performance when giving the chance to fully expose its true colors, and provides a sweet tune from the exhaust in more ways than one! Please take a very close look at this Pro-Touring GTO and feel free to call with questions. We always encourage buyers to view and inspect our vehicles in person, and this car will not disappoint! Come ready to buy, this car is hard to walk away from!
