1964 Pontiac Gto Convertible, Unrestored Original With Phs Documentation on 2040-cars
Poway, California, United States
1964 PONTIAC GTO CONVERTIBLE unrestored original survivor. numbers match. PHS Documented 348 hp tri-power, 4 speed transmission, 3.55 ratio safe-t track rear, radio, heater, windshield tint and nothing else! (no power steering, brakes, no console, no air) I have owned this car since May 1980 (34 years) power steering has been added. It was stored inside and seldom driven for the last 20 years. Since it ran poorly when parked we decided to freshen up the motor and rebuild anything that didn't work properly. The engine (code 76X) is .030 over with new bearings, rings, seals and gaskets. A complete valve job was done with new oil seals, The original camshaft was replaced with Summit part # 123455 which adds considerable horsepower but moves the torque curve up quite a bit. A complete new 2.25" exhaust system was installed, The carbs were rebuilt with new linkage, and air filters, the water pump was replaced, a new clutch disc installed with a new pilot bearing. A replacement distributer was installed and the engine compartment was detailed. The convertible top motor was rebuilt and new weatherstrip was applied to the doors. No other restoration has been done. The car had been repainted before I bought it and the color is similar to the original turquoise. The paint is a 10 footer, shiny but lots of tiny flaws. The front bumper could use chrome but the rear bumper is excellent. The interior is very nice but the carpet is not the original loop style and the front seats are stiched instead of the original electroweld. The rear seat is the original and is perfect. The original door panels are excellent...The top and frame are in good shape and the top boot is nice. There is no rust at all on this car as well as no evidence of any damage. All in all a very nice car. It is MUCH faster than before. Here are the numbers: Block casting #9778155, code 76X dated C 25 4, Heads casting #9770716 dated C 24 4, Intake casting #9775088 dated k 10 3, 4 spd casting # 3851325 (no date), front carb # 7024178 center carb #7024175 Rear carb #7024179 Bell housing casting # 9773320. (unique to the 1964 4 speed cars) All these numbers are correct for the 1964 GTO. The body ID plate (firewall) shows the body to have been built in Pontiac Mich in the 5th week of January 1964 (code 01E), the PHS docs show the date to be Jan 31 1964. so far so good, but the engine (block and heads) was cast in March 64 (C 25 4 and C 24 4). 2 months after the car was built. ??? My guess is that the first owner blew the engine and the block was replaced under warranty (but who knows?) The PHS docs also show no power steering, so that was added sometime before I bought the car in 1980. Any fifty year old car must have it's secrets ! The engine has about 20 minutes of camshaft break in time on my engine stand and less than 50 miles of trouble free driving after installation. The car is ready to drive anywhere. I can email pictures of any part of the car you might like to see. I owned and raced a 64 tempest with a 1969 400 and1966 tripower and heads (#77) which ran 102 in the quarter. This car feels faster. I am getting too old to keep doing this (i'm 75) so everything but my last 2 cars (57 Bel air and 57 270 hp Vette ) will have to go. The radio does not work and the steering wheel is not original but I think you will love the car. I also can include seats and exhaust headers(rusty) from my tempest if you want them. The engine from that 64 tempest is available if someone wants it. It's a 400 ci 69 block with 66 GTO heads (#77) and Tri Power (big center carb), unknown cam but likely stock. Flexplate in back with electronic dist.. $1000 for the engine (the 66heads, intake, and carbs are worth more ). It will be listed on ebay under Pontiac parts. |

CNN chronicles young girl building Pontiac Fiero
Fri, 26 Oct 2012At fourteen years of age, Kathryn DiMaria has already done what many self-proclaimed gearheads won't even attempt in their lifetimes. The Dearborn, Michigan teen is rebuilding a car from the ground up.
The intrepid youngster asked her parents when she was just twelve to start a Pontiac Fiero project, even offering to pony up all the funds herself. Father, Jerry DiMaria only expected the project to last a few months, but two years later, Kathryn is still at it. In this CNN video, the two are at Maker Faire (a DIY festival) rebuilding a 3.4-liter V6 engine out of a Chevrolet Camaro to replace the 2.8-liter mill found in the Fiero.
The whole family hast pitched in, with Kathryn's mother teaching her how to sew in order to complete the interior, father Jerry providing much of the technical know-how, and even her sister is chronicling Kathryn's progress through photos. Jerry even started a thread in a Fiero forum which has been live for two years and is now 22 pages long. Of the project, one forum member wrote, "welcome to the madness."
Junkyard Gem: 2010 Pontiac Vibe
Wed, Apr 17 2024Just over a month before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2009, General Motors announced that the 83-year-old Pontiac Division would be "phased out" by the end of 2010. Only three Pontiac vehicles were sold as 2010 models in the United States: the Solstice, Vibe and G6 (new G3s were sold here during 2010 but they were all 2009 models, while the G5 was available as a 2010 model only in Canada and Mexico). Today's bit of junkyard automotive history is one of the very last Vibes ever built, found in a yard near Denver, Colorado. This car is significant not just as one of the final vehicles to bear Pontiac badges but also as one of the last cars built by the New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated GM-Toyota joint venture in California, better known as NUMMI. The NUMMI factory began life as GM's Fremont Assembly, which built its first vehicle (a C-Series pickup) in 1963 and closed in 1982 after building its final vehicle (an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera). Rebooted as NUMMI, the first 1985 Chevrolet Nova (an Americanized AE82 Toyota Corolla Sprinter) rolled off the line in December of 1984. A quarter-century and better than eight million vehicles hence, NUMMI shut down production after its last Corolla was finished on April 1, 2010. While there was some noise about the Oakland Athletics building a new stadium on the site at the time, Tesla ended up buying most of the site soon after that. Tesla now builds more vehicles per year there than NUMMI ever did. The Vibe was co-developed with Toyota and based on the same platform as the ninth-generation Corolla. The Toyota Matrix was mechanically identical and was built in Canada, while the Japanese-market version (known as the Toyota Voltz) was built on the same NUMMI line as the Vibe and shipped across the Pacific. The Vibe/Matrix/Voltz got a redesign for the 2009 model year, but few noticed due to all the turmoil in the GM world at the time. The final Vibe was built in August 2009. This car was built in July of 2009, just before the end. It was living in West Texas just prior to coming to Colorado. El Paso is about a ten-hour drive from this car's current location. Once in the Centennial State, it got parked somewhere it shouldn't have been and ended up being auctioned to Pick Your Part. An occupant of this Vibe had time to sample some of the local agricultural products before that happened.
Junkyard Gem: 1988 Pontiac LeMans Sedan
Tue, Feb 7 2017During the 1960s, the Pontiac LeMans was a sporty, rear-wheel-drive midsize car, the GTO's cheaper sibling. Through the 1970s and into the middle 1980s, the LeMans became a bit less youthful-looking but remained a traditional rear-wheel-drive Detroit machine with a V8 engine option. Then, starting in the 1988 model year, the LeMans name went onto a South Korean-built version of the misery-inducing, front-wheel-drive Opel Kadett E. These were dark days for the Pontiac marque; here's the proof, photographed at a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard last month. This one didn't quite make it to the 100,000-mile mark. These cars were very, very cheap and sold reasonably well, but nearly all of the 1988-1993 LeManses are hatchbacks. I have seen a total of two Daewoo LeMans sedans during the last decade, and this is one of them. Under the hood, 74 raging Opel/Daewoo horsepower. This content is hosted by a third party. In the United States, the ads for the LeMans were all about the hatchback, and all about cheap excitement.
