1998 Pontiac Firebird Base Coupe 2-door 3.8l on 2040-cars

This is a 1998 Pontiac Firebird with a 3.8 liter V6 and 5-speed manual transmission. This is the very popular GM engine referred to as the "IRON DUKE". It's a 231 cubic inch V6 that is synonymous with reliability and longevity. It gets the fuel economy of a 6 cylinder, (26 mpg) and the performance of a small V8 (260 HP). The car handles well and is lots of fun to drive. All repairs done to this car since I've owned it were performed by a GM certified mechanic with GM parts. This includes new clutch and pressure plate, new oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets,and water pump. The tires are P245/50-16 Mastercraft Avengers with the V-groove performance tread pattern and are like brand new with less than 5,000 miles. The hood is a true Pontiac Ram-Air hood from a WS-6 Trans AM as well as the rear deck lid/spoiler. these parts were professionally painted by a high reputed shop and the color match and clear-coat is a perfect match to the rest of the car. The overall condition of the body is very good with minor scuffs, scratches, and a couple small dings that are normal occurrence with a car that is 15 years old. The car has no rust and no paint peeling, chipping or cracking. It is kept garaged and covered when not driven. The interior is also very good condition. No cracks in dash, door panels, or any other plastic/vinyl parts. Seats and carpet are very nice and free of rips, tears, and burn holes. This car is not smoked in and shows minimal wear inside and out. All glass is free of cracks/chips and was professionally tinted with a lifetime warranty on window tint (not sure if the warranty transfers to a consecutive owner). The car does not have any leaks- oil drips, water leaks, and no smoke from exhaust. The battery is almost new and the car starts readily in any weather. The power windows/locks all work as well as the power trunk release. The stereo is the original Pontiac up-scale "Monsoon" with the CD player, AM/FM stereo tuner and graphic equalizer. The CD player will occasionally have trouble reading a disc. I was told the lens probably needs cleaning. The power antenna still works well up and down when you turn on the radio. The door latches work properly inside and out. The headlights are the retractable type and function perfectly up and down. The AC is currently not working. I had it charged with refrigerant and it blew cold air for a couple of days, so I know it works fine as long as it has enough refrigerant. I was told the compressor has a slow leak through a seal on the housing and it will probably need to be replaced to make it work without any future issues. The tee-tops in this car do not leak, rattle, or squeak. I know this is a problem in some cars. This Firebird is extremely nice and is very well maintained and cared for, but is in storage now more than it is driven, so it is time for someone new to drive it. GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners
Fri, 28 Oct 2011This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand.
The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007. Most are turning to vehicles from Chevrolet, especially during January and February of 2011, when GM incentivized Pontiac owners to stay under the umbrella. Those moves seem to have worked, and 28.1 percent of Pontiac owners trading up made the jump into a Bowtie.
Buyers that have gone elsewhere have largely stayed loyal to Domestic automakers, with Ford picking up the most conquests from Pontiac, with 9.4 percent switching. Toyota and Honda picked up 7.4 percent of the pool of former Pontiac drivers. The numbers are defying any predictions that Pontiac buyers would completely exit the General Motors fold, and have climbed up closer to parity with the retention figures of other GM brands from a 2009 low of only 16 percent retention.
GM recalling over 40,000 Chevy, Pontiac and Saturn models over fuel pump woes
Mon, 01 Oct 2012The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for a number of General Motors cars and crossovers bought or currently registered in the hot-climate states of Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. As many as 40,859 units consisting of the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent and Saturn Ion and the 2007-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt (shown) and its Pontiac G5 twin are being recalled for potential fuel leaks.
This recall is being issued due to potentially faulty fuel pump components that can crack and cause gasoline to leak from the return or supply ports and possibly cause a fire. NHTSA has not indicated how many fuel leaks or vehicle fires have been reported. As a fix, GM will replace the fuel pump modules on all affected vehicles free of charge. Since Pontiac and Saturn have been shuttered, owners will be able to go to another GM-brand dealership to have their vehicles repaired.

GM isn't liable for punitive damages in ignition switch cases
Wed, Nov 20 2019NEW YORK — A federal appeals court said General Motors is not liable for punitive damages over accidents that occurred after its 2009 bankruptcy and involved vehicles it produced earlier, including vehicles with faulty ignition switches. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said on Tuesday that the automaker did not agree to contractually assume liability for punitive damages as part of its federally-backed Chapter 11 reorganization. GM filed for bankruptcy in June 2009, and its best assets were transferred to a new Detroit-based company with the same name. The other assets and many liabilities stayed with "Old GM," which is also known as Motors Liquidation Co. Tuesday's 3-0 decision may help GM reduce its ultimate exposure in nationwide litigation over defective ignition switches in several Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn models. It is also a defeat for drivers involved in post-bankruptcy accidents, including those who collided with older GM vehicles driven by others, as well as their law firms. The ignition switch defect could cause engine stalls and keep airbags from deploying, and has been linked to 124 deaths. A lawyer for the drivers and their law firms did not immediately respond to requests for comment. GM had no comment. Circuit Judge Dennis Jacobs said GM's agreement to acquire assets "free and clear" of most liabilities excused it from punitive damages claims for Old GM's conduct. He also noted that the judge who oversaw the bankruptcy concluded that the new company could not be liable for claims that the "deeply insolvent" Old GM would never have paid. The decision upheld a May 2018 ruling by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan, who oversees the ignition switch litigation. Drivers have sought a variety of damages in that litigation, including for declining resale values. GM has recalled more than 2.6 million vehicles since 2014 over ignition switch problems. It has also paid more than $2.6 billion in related penalties and settlements, including $900 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice criminal case.
