Do you remember 1985?
It was the year of Live Aid, the beginning of VH-1 and the end of "The Price is Right" with Johnny Olson. Bobby Ewing was run over by his ex-sister-in-law's car, "Dynasty"s Amanda Carrington's wedding turned into the "Moldavian Massacre", "K.I.T.T." started into his final "Knight Rider" season, "Miami Vice" into it's second. "The Breakfast Club" soon became one of the most popular movies in 1985, Marty McFly time-travelled with his DeLorean "Back to the Future" and created a cult.
It was the year of "Born in the USA", "A view to a kill", "Sussudio", "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" and "I want to know what love is", and it's was also the last official year for carburetor Firebirds before the fuel injection moved in - the last year of the grumpy sounding "High Output" Trans Ams.

I bought this beautiful, award winning 1985 Trans Am this early summer with less than 32.000 mls from the Clawsin Car Show from the second owner who drove it only to classic car events. The first owner once stored the Pontiac in a garage for almost 13 years of the 22 years he owned it and created a wonderful time capsule.
But every car guy will confirm you just don't store a car that long time without having some flaws coming along - so I had to do some improvements on this Firebird: The 4 barrel carburetor (Quadrajet) got refurbished, all hoses replaced. The Alternator got replaced, also headlights, foglights, headliner, hood insulation, rear wheel brakes (completely incl. emergency brake cable), all system liquids/fluids and the windshield washer pump.
Soon I found myself cruising around every night with this classic 80's T-Top Bird and added almost 4.000 mls during the summer - way too much for this low mileage status. And honestly, there' wasn't one single day I didn't get thumbs up or buying offers - this Trans Am really wows the crowd and causes a stir, which makes me think it better should be kept in this fantastic condition on the long run.
That's why I rather see it in somebody's hands who won't drive it every day and treats it the way it deserves.

The body and floor panels are all clean, the engine looks and runs like brand new. The four speed automatic shifts smooth and soft, the original exhaust rumbles like in the good old muscle car days. Everything works fine, even the concealed headlight motors and the cruise control. Nothing is worn out or cracked, no filthy smell (non smoker car). If you know cars, then you also know about GM's quality issues - one reason why so many of these stylish, sleek Firebirds became extinct. You'll have to dig deep finding a better Trans Am than this one, especially if it gotta have the rare silver paint or the rare vinyl bucket seats. This Trans Am is just ready to go - how soon is now?

This is not just another low mileage car which will fall apart with the first time turning the key - this Bird really kicks ass!

GM replacing passenger airbags in over 243,000 Pontiac Vibes

Sat, Jun 20 2015

General Motors is repairing over 243,000 additional examples of the 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe in the US and Canada to replace their Takata-supplied passenger-side airbag inflators. The company has no reports of irregular deployments in the models, though. These aren't actually newly included vehicles in the massive safety campaign. As a twin to the Toyota Matrix, the Vibe was already included in Toyota's figures, but as Pontiac-branded vehicles, GM dealers are taking care of these replacements. They have been covered as part of the Takata campaign in the past. Toyota expanded its own Takata recall to passenger-side components for 1.365 million vehicles on June 16. Earlier, General Motors also issued a campaign for 330,198 examples of the 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, 3500HD, GMC Sierra 2500HD, and 3500HD pickups to replace their passenger-side parts. After exposure to moisture, it's possible for these inflators to ignite too quickly in an accident and spray shrapnel at occupants. GM Statement The Vibes are included in two Toyota recall campaigns - one for high absolute humidity (HAH) areas and one for non-HAH areas. Both are considered national recalls even though only vehicles in certain HAH states and territories are in the recall. Total Pontiac Vibe passenger air bag numbers for MY 2003-2007 (U.S. and Canada only): High Absolute Humidity 89,719 Non High Absolute Humidity areas 252,685 These are the totals, which include about 99,000 previously recalled. GM knows of no field issues - irregular deployments - with these air bag inflators.

GM repairing 40,500 Pontiac Vibes as part of Toyota airbag recall

Wed, 09 Apr 2014

General Motors has confirmed to Autoblog that the Pontiac Vibe is included in Toyota's just-announced recall action. The Vibe and the Toyota Matrix share a large number of parts, including the affected cable to the airbag.
"About 40,500 Pontiac Vibes from the 2009-2010 model years are included in the Toyota recall. Toyota designed and engineered the Vibe for Pontiac. GM will service customers with these vehicles when Toyota makes the parts available," said GM recall spokesperson Alan Adler to Autoblog in an email.
The recall covers 1.3 million Toyota units in the US, including 2009-2010 Corolla, Matrix and Tacoma, the 2008-2010 Highlander, the 2006-2008 Rav4 and 2006-2010 Yaris, plus the addition of the 2009-2010 Vibe. The models all have their airbag module attached via a spiral electrical cable. The connections on this cable can be damaged when turning the steering wheel. Once broken, the airbag deactivates and the airbag warning light comes on. Toyota has an improved part, but it's still making preparations to begin repairs. It will begin notifying owners soon.

Junkyard Gem: 1964 Pontiac Catalina Custom Ventura

Mon, May 22 2023

Like Impala, Skylark, Malibu and Silverado (among many others), the Ventura name began its career as the designation for a trim level or option package used on another GM model, then became a model name in its own right. Initially a designation for a snazzed-up Pontiac Catalina two- or four-door hardtop, the Ventura name moved over to a Pontiac-ized version of the Chevy Nova for 1971. Today's Junkyard Gem, found in a Northern California car graveyard, proudly bears both Catalina and Ventura badging. Actually, the Catalina name itself started out as a trim level for the Chieftain and Star Chief models of the 1950s, just to confuse everybody. By the time this car was built, the Catalina was the cheapest of four Pontiac models built on the same full-size B-Body platform as the big Chevrolets and Olds 88s of the time (the Star Chief, Bonneville and Grand Prix ranked above it on the 1964 Pontiac Prestige-O-Meter). The 1964 Catalina four-door hardtop with the Custom Ventura package offered a lot of swank per dollar, with a price starting at $3,063. That's about $29,821 when converted to inflated 2023 dollars. The main benefit of the Custom Ventura package was an interior done up entirely in Morrokide upholstery. Morrokide was the name GM applied to Naugahyde fake leather when used in Pontiac vehicles; when used in Buicks, it was known as Cordaveen, while Oldsmobile Naugahyde was called Morocceen. Naugahyde took its name from the town of Naugatuck, Connecticut, where it was invented. This car's Morrokide is in rough shape. In fact, everything about this car is decayed and probably infectious. You know to be careful when a junkyard car has warnings about rat feces inked on the glass. That said, I couldn't resist examining the 8-track tapes that littered the interior. Here's Hotel California, the 1976 hit album by the Eagles. Supertramp's Paris, a live album recorded from the 1979 Breakfast in America tour, is here as well. Here's The Best of Carly Simon, from 1975. The tapes were played on this Sparkomatic player, which probably lived in the glovebox or under the seat. The factory radio was AM-only, and includes the frequency markings for the atomic-attack CONELRAD emergency frequencies. 1964 was the last year for mandatory CONELRAD radios in the United States.
