This is my 1968 Firebird 400 which was sold new in Washington State where salt is not used on the roads so it is
virtually rust free. It has 63,000 original miles with one repaint and otherwise very original. The vinyl top is
original and still looks excellent. The interior is completely original including carpet, door sill plates with
rivets, brake/accelerator pedal pads, etc and in excellent condition. The dash pad, console, door panels, etc. have
no cracks, marks or scratches. All of the glass is original including the outside mirror. The car has a
replacement carb, but I have a nice 1968 400 Firebird automatic carb to go with the car. The original washer pump
is installed, but there is a small aftermarket washer pump added to the car. I have not had time to restore the
original pump. After last tax season (I am a CPA), the gas gauge did not work, and I have not yet run down the
connection that needs to be cleaned. The car also has a repo front bumper. The original AC still blows cool air
and has its original sticker on the AC compressor. Except for the carb, the drivetrain is totally original
including the air cleaner, intake, heads, "born with" matching block, valve covers, idle stop solenoid, heat riser
shroud, bolts, nuts, washers, transmission, drive shaft, rear end, etc, etc, etc. I doubt the engine has ever been
apart so I suggest that the timing chain be replaced at some point. Correct 14X6 Rally II wheels are not original
but go with the car. The original deluxe wheel covers are included and have nice red centers as can be seen in the
picture. I have also included a picture of some parts that I will let go--repo vacuum kit, some clips, rubber
parts and an NOS master cylinder cap. An all cotton car cover is included.
This Firebird has been in an enclosed garage and covered most of its life. I included a couple of pictures under
the car. One of the pictures shows that the plate under the engine is not bent from having a jack placed under it.
Most Firebirds are bent in this area. The other picture shows a typical place on the underbody with no rusting .
The car has traveled less than 100 miles per year for many years. Several years ago, I traveled from North
Carolina to Washington State to buy this Pontiac due to its originality and excellent condition. It was brought
across the country in an enclosed trailer. I have only used alcohol free gas mixed with real lead and engine oil
containing zinc with additional zinc added at each oil change. I am as picky as anyone in the country when it comes
to maintaining an old Pontiac.
I have the Pontiac Historic Services info on the car. Options include: 400 4 BBL V8 (includes chrome air
cleaner/rocker covers/oil cap, dual exhaust, declutching fan, hood scoops, chrome “hockey sticks” in grill,
arrow head on front bumper), Hydra-Matic Transmission, AM Radio, Deluxe Wheel Discs, Deluxe Steering Wheel,
Console, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Soft Ray Glass—all windows, Bucket Seat Adjuster (extremely rare and
works), Custom Air Conditioning, Vinyl Top.
I entered it in one judged show at the General Greene Greensboro NC Chapter of AACA where it won a First. It would
probably not win a gold at a POCI convention because the engine has never been out to be detailed and the underside
and exhaust are not like new--just clean and rust free--except for the exhaust system. I am unsure if this is the
original exhaust on the car with a replacement muffler. Some interior pictures show a cover over the dash pad to
keep the pad cooler when outside.

The last Pontiac Fiero sold for $90,000 at auction

Thu, Dec 3 2020

On August 16, 1988 the last Pontiac Fiero, a red GT model, rolled off the assembly line at GM's Pontiac Assembly plant located in Pontiac, Michigan. It wasn't just the final Fiero, but the final car to be built at that site. The car was raffled off to one of 1,400 plant employees that would soon have to find jobs elsewhere. Whoever that employee was, they remained faithful to the Fiero and kept it in mint condition for 32 years. Last month, it was finally time to move on. It crossed the block at GAA Auctions in Greensboro, North Carolina where it sold for an astounding $90,000. According to the auction house, that's a new world record. The price no doubt reflected the car's place in history as the last example of GM's 1980s mid-engined sports car. However, it was also showroom-new, with just 582 miles clocked on its 2.8-liter V6. 1988 models were also fitted with an upgraded, Lotus-esque suspension produced for just that one year. In addition, this car, serial number 226402, came with its original build sheet, photos from the assembly line, and a collection of news articles and books. It still wore its pre-delivery plastic on the interior and was fully loaded with automatic transmission. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. The car's custodian for the past 32 years must be pleased. Bidding started at $25,000 but soon rocketed past the $65,000 reserve. You can see the action starting at the 2:50:13 mark in the video above. The Fiero was symbolic of the 1980s and stood out from the standard GM passenger car fare for its mid-engine layout and plastic body panels. In an era when GM often rebadged cars with minimal differences, the Fiero rode on its own unique chassis. It was positioned as one of the defining products for Pontiac, GM's "excitement" brand, but actual performance never quite lived up to its striking looks.  Nevertheless, it garnered a cult following. It's often the basis for (questionable) custom builds mimicking more exotic models like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, thanks to a steel space-frame design that allows body panels to be easily removed. Thankfully, this significant example escaped such a fate and will live on as a reminder of an interesting chapter of automotive history.

2.1 million vehicles recalled again over faulty airbags

Sat, Jan 31 2015

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda and Toyota will recall 2.1 million vehicles to fix faulty airbag modules "after the manufacturers' original attempts to fix the defects proved ineffective in some vehicles." These vehicles had all previously been recalled, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the airbags could still potentially malfunction. This recall will cover Acura MDX, Dodge Viper, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Odyssey, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix and Toyota Avalon models made in the early 2000s. NHTSA has reportedly received about 40 reports of airbag deployment in such vehicles, even though the vehicle had not been involved in a crash. Roughly one million of these same vehicles, all from Honda and Toyota, are also subject to recalls due to faulty Takata airbag modules, though this particular recall is for "an electronic component manufactured by TRW" that is separate from the actual airbags from Takata. According to NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind: "This is unfortunately a complicated issue for consumers, who may have to return to their dealer more than once. But this is an urgent safety issue, and all consumers with vehicles covered by the previous recalls should have that remedy installed. Even though it's a temporary solution until the new remedy is available, they and their families will be safer if they take the time to learn if their vehicle is covered and follow their manufacturers' instructions. A hassle is much better than a family tragedy." If you're the owner of an affected car, expect to hear more from the official automaker and government channels in short order. In the meantime, we'd suggest getting your car checked and fixed at your local dealer. The official statement and recall information can be found below. Previously Recalled Vehicle Remedies Not Working as Designed; NHTSA Announces Follow up Recall of 2.12 Million Cars and SUVs Saturday, January 31, 2015 Contact: Gordon Trowbridge, 202-366-9550, Public.Affairs@dot.gov WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced today the recall of more than 2.12 million Acura, Dodge, Jeep, Honda, Pontiac, and Toyota vehicles for a defect that may cause airbags to deploy inadvertently. The recalls will provide vehicle owners with a new remedy after the manufacturers' original attempts to fix the defects proved ineffective in some vehicles.

GM recalls 61k more vehicles in three campaigns

Sun, 05 Oct 2014

Following a stop-delivery order for its new midsize trucks and a rash of recent recalls, General Motors is issuing three more campaigns covering 60,575 vehicles in North America with 57,182 of them in the US. As of October 1, the automaker has issued a total of 74 recalls (see the ridiculously long chart to the right) this year covering 26,495,070 units in the US.
The largest campaign covers 46,873 examples in the US of the 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 and 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle imported from Australia. It's possible for the driver's knee to hit the key and make it move from the "Run" to "ACC" position while driving. GM says its Holden division is developing a fixed-blade key that's supposed to fix the problem by only allowing it to rotate toward the "On" position. There has been one crash caused by this fault but no injuries or fatalities.
The second recall is for 10,005 units of the 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V because "the fuel pump module electrical terminal may overheat." This can cause a flange to melt and allow the pump to leak fuel. GM specifies that the remedy for the CTS-V is replacing the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, but it doesn't specify how the STS-V is being repaired.
