If you are restoring a 59 Catalina Vista, and it is rusty or in otherwise poor condition, get this car and use this body and your interior and other parts to make one good car out of two.

Here is the condition of the car as accurately as I can describe it:

HOOD:  The hood is very solid, rust free under side and top.  It appears to have been hit very slightly in the nose, and the top is buckled up about a third of the way back.  A good body man could easily straighten it back to original shape with very little effort.  (I also have another hood that is in better shape I would consider including, in place of this one, if the buyer wishes.)

FRONT/ENGINE COMPARTMENT:  The radiator support, and inner fenders are solid, no rust.  The engine and transmission look to be okay, but I have never had it running or taken the engine apart, so I don't know its condition.  At a minimum, there would be many 389 engine parts that are good, if the engine cannot be repaired as is.  There is no steering gear and no brake master cylinder.  There is a 2-barrel carb.  There is a Buick radiator sitting in the radiator slot, but I don't know its condition.  There is no front bumper.  The grille, grille bars and sheet metal under the grille are all in repairable condition.  There is no grille trim.

FR FENDERs:  The front fenders are not in good condition.  Both have dents on the front edge over the headlights and both have rust in the lower back section near the door.  The left fender appears to have been repaired at some point over the wheel opening and has some other minor dents.  It could be salvaged, but is certainly not mint.  The right fender is straighter, but the rust is worse in the lower rear section.

DOORS:  There is virtually no rust on any of the doors, inside or out, top or bottom.  The chrome window frames are in excellent condition, and for a driver, would probably not even need to be re-chromed.  The windows are still in the back doors and have been removed from the front doors.  The front door regulators are missing.  There is some very minor creases or dents on the L rear, L front and R rear doors, but nothing significant or difficult to repair.

ROCKER PANELS:  The rocker panels are rust free and straight.

QUARTER PANELS:  The right quarter panel is very straight and only has a very small patch (about the size of a quarter) of rust over the wheel opening about 2/3 of the way back.  No rust on the rear bottom where '59s usually are rusted.  The left panel has been hit from the rear and is buckled somewhat around the backup light opening, over the wheel opening, and in front of the wheel opening.  This quarter panel it totally rust free however, and the damage is not so bad that good body man and a port-a-power jack couldn't straighten.  The trim on both sides in in good shape and could be polished to like new condition.

REAR PANEL:   The panel between the tail lights is bent in from a rear end hit, but is solid and has no rust.  The bumper ends are good enough to re-chrome, but the center section is bent pretty bad and I don't know if it can be straightened or not.

DECK LID:  The deck lid is rust free, except for a patch of surface rust where the paint is gone.  The trim is nice.  It has a couple minor dings, but could easily be straightened and polished to look like new.  The deck lid has a very minor buckle on the underneath right side and therefore a very gentle curve to the top that would need to be repaired.  Otherwise it is very good condition and is easily repairable.

FLOORS:  The floors are in remarkably good condition compared to many '59s.  The front floor pans and the floor under the front seats are very solid.  The left rear seat floor pan (where your feet go) have some rust but only have small areas that are rusted through.  The right side has some surface rust, but not clear through.  The floor under the rear seat is very solid.  The trunk floor is solid and only show a small area of rust-through in front of the tail light support

TOP:  The top still has the original paint and is very straight.  The stainless steel trim around the top is in good shape.  Some minor dents could be easily straightened and the trim polished to like new condition.  Likewise for the windshield reveals and the rear window side reveals.  (Not sure whether I have the bottom reveals or not.

INTERIOR:  The dash, interior door handles, window cranks, and a couple door panels are included.  There are no seats or other interior.

If the buyer is going to  the POCI convention in Wichita KS June 18-21, I will deliver the car to Wichita, or anywhere between Denver and Wichita.  If it does not sell before June 17th, I plan to take it to Wichita and sell the car, or part it out at the POCI swap meet.  This car is so solid, I would hate to send it to the crusher, so step up if you need parts or a solid car to use for your restoration.

David Hasselhoff's own KITT replica up for auction

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

Depending on when and where you grew up, the name David Hasselhoff likely conjures up images of Knight Rider, Baywatch, pop singer, or possibly a washed-up TV actor, but one thing that can never be taken away from The Hoff is his connection to one of the greatest automotive icons in pop culture. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, usually shortened to simply KITT, was the real star of Knight Rider for many fans. Based on a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the car combined snarky quips for comedy relief and stunts to provide much of the show's actions. Now, Julien's Auctions is selling Hasselhoff's own replica as part of a larger sale of the actor's personal memorabilia collection.
This recreation is based on a 1986 Firebird and comes with all of the tech on the inside that now seems hilariously outdated, like the yoke steering wheel and plethora of buttons. The interior also thoughtfully includes a voice box with over 4,000 sound clips from the show. With a 5.0-liter V8 and an automatic transmission, performance is likely adequate and period correct. According to the listing, this car was created by fans and given to the Hoff. Sadly, the replica doesn't convert to Super Pursuit Mode like KITT could in later seasons, and we most associate KITT with conventional front-hinged doors to go with the power t-tops and ejector seats.
Bidding currently sits $27,500 with eight bids, since starting at $15,000. Julien's predicts it will sell for between $30,000 and $50,000. If there is some nostalgia for KITT in your heart, there is still plenty of time to bid.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Saturn Sky

Sat, Jun 26 2021

The Pontiac Division didn't have long to live when the Solstice first appeared in 2005 as a 2006 model, and Saturn's head was inching toward the chopping block at about the same rate. Still, optimism reigned — at least, it did until the global economy fell apart — and so Saturn Dealers got a rebadged version of the Solstice to sell: the Sky. Available for just the 2007 through 2010 model years, slightly more than 34,000 Skies rolled out of showrooms before the doors were nailed shut. Here's one of those rare cars, found in a Denver-area self-service yard a few weeks ago. I've found a handful of discarded Solstices in car graveyards during the past few years, mostly with crash damage. This Sky endured a medium-hard impact in the right front corner, which sent it to this place. The 177-horsepower, 2.4-liter Ecotec still resides under the battered hood. The Sky Redline version had a turbocharged engine rated at 260 horses; we can assume that such an engine would be yanked and purchased by the first junkyard shopper that realized what it was. The base transmission in the Sky was an Aisin five-speed manual, but this car has the optional five-speed automatic.  The Sky had its own nose and some different badging, but otherwise didn't differ much from the Solstice.  For the South Korean market, the Sky got Daewoo G2X badges and was advertised as the ideal vehicle for high-speed chases through Seoul traffic. The same car went to Europe as the Opel GT. Sadly, GM ran out of money to make right-hand-drive Skies, so we never got to witness Holden or Vauxhall versions. Here's Bob Lutz describing the new Sky. Lutz really hated car names molded into plastic bumper covers, so he takes great care here to describe the genuine glued-on emblems. Related Video:

The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land

Thu, Oct 15 2015

Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top.
