If you want to know what's cool in cars, slide behind the wheel of this 1963 Pontiac Bonneville convertible and watch what happens. The ultimate in '60s chic, the Bonneville is for guys who have it made but don't much feel like driving around in their dad's stuffy Cadillac, and it's got the power to back it up. Painting it RED only makes it look that much more massive, maybe about a city block long, but Pontiac designers nailed it with this one. RED is this car's original color, so you know the guy who ordered a loaded RED Bonneville ragtop back in 1963 had his life togethr. It's in attractive shape, not perfect, but certainly nice enough to cruise town with pride. The doors fit well and the side trim lines up neatly, so you know they spent the time to get it right when it was time to put it back together. The stacked headlamps were a Pontiac look that continued for years and influenced the entire industry, while the beautiful, almost delicate taillights give this car the look of something far more expensive. Bright chrome details provide just the right amount of contrast, but not so much that they make the car look heavy. The Pontiac guys got this 1 right! Red bucket seats provide enough room for 5 in the full-sized B-body ragtop, and in the top-of-the-line Bonneville, luxury came standard. The seats remain in terrific condition, the original owner told us that he had the covers and carpets replaced several years back. A wide speedometer is directly ahead of the driver, but a trio of aux gauges is in the center of the dash and looks extremely sporty, making the Bonneville the ultimate luxury/muscle machine. An artfully designed steering wheel makes you feel important when you're at the helm, and the car is optioned up with a power convertible top that means you don't even have to get out of your seat to enjoy open-air motoring. The gorgeous panel ahead of the passenger with "BONNEVILLE" spelled out in block letters is extremely cool. The white convertible top is in superb shape and with a red boot it gives the big convertible a very sleek look. And you know it's made for road trips, because there's a giant trunk with original mats and a full-sized spare tire. Pontiac's 389 cubic inch V8 was the top engine in 1963 and provides the kind of effortless power you\d expect from a car like this. It's not all shiny and detailed under the hood, but the basic mechanical goodness of the engine can't be denied and it purrs along on the highway without breaking a sweat. There are no major deviations from stock, so it's going to be easy to keep it in top condition from here on out. A Hydra-Matic automatic transmission delivers power to the stock rear end, and aside from a new muffler, the undercarriage appears to be quite original. Handsome full wheel covers are fitted inside flashy 15-inch wide whitewall radials. Luxury performance was never this good anywhere but in the Pontiac showrooms, and the top-of-the-line Bonneville still delivers traffic-stopping looks and plenty of punch on the open road. I purchased this car from the original owner who bought it new in 63'. He had some amazing stories about this car, the left quarter panel is the only non-factory paint on the car. The man who owned it said a lady backed into it in 1965 at the grocery store and he had it repaired. It has one spot in the lower quarter where the paint has peeled as you can see in the photos but other than that the car is solid. I have the original title from the man who bought the car in 63'. If you have any questions about this car at all please call me at 573-431-2767, I am a body shop owner so I can pretty well answer any question you may have about the condition of the car and provide any additional photos.

Fiero-based Zimmer Quicksilver was objectively terrible, but we'd totally drive it

Wed, Jan 19 2022

Now here's something you don't see everyday. It's listed in our classified ads as a 1986 Pontiac Fiero, but as you can see, that description is a bit misleading. In fact, it's a Zimmer Quicksilver, which was indeed built atop the guts of a mid-engine Fiero coupe but was heavily modified by the Zimmer Motorcars Corporation at a facility in Pompano Beach, Florida. And the one you see here actually seems to be a pretty decent deal for a highly unusual car. We're not sure what was a more popular starting point for kit and custom cars in the 1980s and 1990s, but it would have to be either the Fiero or the vintage air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. Fiero-based machines usually mimicked the design direction of any number of highly desirable Italian stallions, most commonly, we'd guess, the Lamborghini Countach. The Quicksilver is an altogether different animal, with over a foot of extra wheelbase added in front of the A-pillar to make for a dramatic, long and low silhouette that somehow still only has barely enough room for two passengers in its leather- and wood-lined interior. A stock 2.8-liter V6 engine from General Motors is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission that sends 140 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Period road tests found the 0-60 run took a little over 10 seconds, which is terrible today but wasn't all that bad for the mid '80s. Best we can tell, only around 170 Quicksilvers were made between 1984 and 1988, which are, not coincidentally, the same years that Pontiac produced the Fiero. The 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver you see here is priced at $18,495 and shows well under 30,000 miles on the odometer. There aren't a lot of Zimmer Quicksilvers currently for sale for us to compare, but the ones we did find that had sold within the last few years suggest a little under $20,000 is a reasonable asking price. It could be a fun and offbeat addition to the garage, and if nothing else, you're not likely to see another one at your local car show. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Celebrate the summer solstice by building the Pontiac Solstice shooting brake GM never did

Fri, Jun 21 2019

Happy summer solstice, everyone! To celebrate, we have a particularly unusual eBay find connected to the Pontiac Solstice sports car. A seller has leftover inventory of fiberglass hardtops designed to turn the Pontiac Solstice roadster into a shooting brake. The seller says they came from a since-closed Indiana company, and they're clearly inspired by another aftermarket part and even a GM concept that never saw the light of day. We'll start from the beginning: the stillborn Chevy Nomad concept. It was a concept that came out about the same time as the original Solstice concept, and it was clearly based on the same platform, featuring a small two-door body and a long nose. It also had unashamedly retro Nomad wagon design cues and cues from the original Corvette. The car never saw production, but clearly people were interested in having a wagon-like sports car. That brings us to the next bit of history with an aftermarket hardtop developed by German company EDAG. We saw a prototype in person, and the overall shape seemed to fit the car — and the wraparound window design certainly seemed Nomadic. Besides the unique look, the hardtop and its functional hatch made the Solstice roadster's miniscule cargo space far more usable. It doesn't appear many of the tops were sold, though. These tops on eBay look very similar to the EDAG tops, though it's not clear if they're a direct replica or something similar. Being that the parts are leftover inventory, the seller notes that some of the tops may be missing pieces for installation, so only those who are handy with bodywork and fasteners, or who are able to lean on someone who is, need apply. Even with some extra work, if you really want a Solstice shooting brake, this is likely easier and cheaper than commissioning a shop to custom-build a roof for your. If you're interested, check out the link. They're $499.99 apiece, and the seller will also provide a set of seals and gaskets for the top for an extra $125.

GM Recalls 1.5 Million Cars For Steering Defect

Tue, Apr 1 2014

General Motors Co. said Monday it is recalling 1.5 million vehicles worldwide because the electronic power-steering assist can suddenly stop working, making them harder to steer. The new recall brings to 6.3 million the number of vehicles GM has recalled since February. The initial recall - now at 2.6 million small cars for an ignition switch defect - prompted the automaker to name a new safety chief and speed up the review of cases that might lead to recalls. GM said it expects recall-related costs to total $750 million in the first quarter, including $300 million for the ignition switch recall. Included in the new recall are: - Chevrolet Malibu from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006, 2008 and 2009 model-year cars. - Chevrolet Malibu Maxx from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006 model-year cars. - Chevrolet HHR from the 2009-2010 model years (non-turbocharged only). - Some Chevrolet Cobalts from the 2010 model year. - Some Saturn Auras from the 2008-2009 model years. - Saturn Ion from the 2004-2007 model years. - Pontiac G6 from the 2005 model year, plus some cars from the 2006, 2008 and 2009 model years. - Service parts installed into certain vehicles before May 31, 2010, under a previous recall GM says no deaths related to the defect have been reported. It is still investigating whether there have been any accidents or injuries related to the problem. GM dealers will replace the power steering motor and other parts for free. Spokesman Alan Adler said owners will be notified of the recall the week of April 28 and will be told when parts are available after that. The Cobalt and the Ion, which are also involved in the ignition switch recall, share many common parts.GM recalled Cobalts from the 2005-2010 model years for the power steering defect in 2010, but it's unclear why the company didn't recall the Ion at the same time. Federal regulators also opened an investigation into power steering complaints in the Ion in 2010, but didn't order a recall.
