1959 Pontiac Bonneville Hardtop

Show Quality example

Classic Wide Track styling

Excellent on the road

Up for bids here on eBay is this this show-stopping '59 Pontiac Bonneville.  1959 was the first year for Pontiac's signature split grill and wide track chassis.  This 2 door hardtop was lightly restored from a very original example, it features an incredibly well preserved interior and perfect trim and chrome.  Showing 24,762 miles, the car has many indicators of a low mile car but due to its age is sold mileage exempt.  A DMV registration slip from 1991 shows an odometer statement of 017,190.  My gut instinct said it's doubtful a car from 1959 could have this mileage, but the more I looked the more convinced I became.  The interior is almost all original and shows hardly any wear.  All of the trimwork on the dash is original and perfect.  The exterior trim is all perfect.  The window felts are original and look like new.  The undercarriage is untouched and still has its original spiral shocks in the rear.  In the end it doesn't matter much, mileage aside this '59 presents as new, probably one of the best Bonneville bubbletops on the market.

The car has had one repaint in its original combination of Sunset Glow with a Cameo Ivory roof.  The paint is show quality throughout, I'm picky about paint and can say that there are no dissapointments with this finish.  Perfect prep and perfect application, a very impressive final product.  Excellent panel fit and of course no rust issues anywhere.  Tires are Coker Classic radials with low miles.  All 4 wheelcovers are in terrific shape.

Trim, chrome and emblems are all outstanding.

Excellent lights and lenses.  Body line trim shows absolutely zero dings or damage.

Bumpers front and rear are flawless and that's a word I don't use freely.  The original license plate bracket for the front bumper is included.

Grill is unmarked and like new.  Original T3 headlights.

The massive quarter panels are straight as an arrow, rear bumper fit is perfect.

All of the minor details on this car can hold up to close scrutiny.  Windshield is a high quality replacement and is crystal clear with no wear.

With the exception of the windshield all of the glass are the factory tinted E-Z-Eye originals. They show some yellowing on the edges and the passenger side front window frame has some light pitting.  This is the only area of pitting on the car, the remainder of the chrome is like new.

The trunk has a replacement mat, the side panels and spare cover are original.  The spare tire is original and all factory jacking equipment is present.  Power antenna works correctly.  Trunk lid shows the optional reel-out lamp.

The carpet and mats have been replaced, otherwise this interior is all original, it's in terrific condition.

All of the switchgear and trim on the dash looks like new.

Dash pad is in great shape.  Working radio with good sound.  Clean glovebox and underdash area.

Steering wheel has no cracks or splits, horn ring and center insert are in great shape.  Pedals show no wear.

All gauges work correctly except for the clock.  Dash illumination and interior lighting all work.

Garnish moldings are all excellent, door panels and weatherstripping as well.  Doors close with one finger.

Untouched rear seat area and speaker grill.  Windows all wind smoothly.  Ashtrays are unused.  Headliner is original with the correct star pattern.

The 389 runs excellent with no smoke, it provides plenty of power to move this large car down the road.  The Hydramatic transmission shifts perfectly.  Power steering and power brakes make around town driving easy.  This is just a killer cruising car, it glides down the road beautifully.  Steering is tight, suspension is great and the radial tires make freeway travel a pleasure.

The car comes with a full binder of receipts and a photo documented record of the repaint.  Included are the original owners manual and factory keys with their knockout plates intact.  Also included is a high quality fitted car cover.

The undercarriage is solid and original with no rust and no signs of damage.  It does leak some oil when sitting.  New exhaust from the manifolds back, the Blue Streak mufflers and resonators provide a really nice understated rumble, it completes the package of this iconic 50's cruiser.

General Motors Recalls Nearly 780,000 Cars To Fix Deadly Problem

Thu, Feb 13 2014

General Motors is recalling nearly 780,000 compact cars in North America because the engines can shut down unexpectedly and cause crashes. The company says six people have been killed in crashes related to the problem. The recall affects Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s from the 2005 through 2007 model years. U.S. safety regulators say the weight of the key ring and rough roads can move the ignition switch out of the run position, cutting the engine and electricity. If that happens, air bags may not work. GM says there have been 22 crashes from the problem. All happened at high speeds. Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free. GM says owners should remove nonessential items from key rings until the problem is fixed. One of Burt Reynolds' favorite cars could be yours

Fri, Apr 12 2019

LOS ANGELES — One of Burt Reynolds' favorite cars is going up for auction in June along with some of his cowboy boots, hats, sports jackets and other items from his estate, Julien's Auctions said on Friday. The two-day auction in Beverly Hills, authorized by the actor's family, comes almost a year after the death at age 82 of the charming star who was one of Hollywood's favorite actors. The highlight of the auction is a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am car that Reynolds used on photo shoots and drove on the Bandit Run cross country rally, which re-enacts the journey at the center of his 1977 film "Smokey and the Bandit." The car, which Reynolds co-owned with his business partner Gene Kennedy, is expected to fetch up to $500,000 at auction, Julien's said in a statement. Two pairs of leather cowboy boots — one red and one yellow — are also offered for sale with estimates ranging from $800 to $2,000 a pair, along with two cowboy hats. Reynolds started out as a football player at Florida State University (FSU) before injuries suffered in a car crash wrecked his hopes of a professional career. But his attachment to FSU remained strong. The auction includes several custom or personalized FSU baseball, basketball and varsity jackets. Other highlights include an oil on canvas painting of the actor's favorite horse titled "Cartouche," which carries an estimate of $20,000 - $30,000. Other art works, furniture and dozens of personal items are also being offered for sale. The auction will take place in Beverly Hills on June 15 and 16, and will be preceded by a public exhibition of some of the items from June 10-14. Reynolds, who was also known for the 1960s television series "Gunsmoke" and the movies "Deliverance" and "Boogie Nights,"" died of a heart attack in Florida in September 2018. Junkyard Gem: 1996 Pontiac Grand Am SE Coupe

Thu, Jun 22 2023

The Grand Am was the best-selling Pontiac model in the United States for every year of the 1990s, and it outsold most of its N-Body platform-mates (including the Chevrolet Corsica/Beretta) during nearly all of that decade. A sporty-looking compact with two or four doors, the Grand Am offered true 1990s radness—and, in some cases, respectable performance — at a good price. Today's Junkyard Gem is a nicely preserved example of the facelifted 1996 Grand Am, found in a Denver-area car graveyard. This is an SE Coupe with base engine and transmission, the most affordable Grand Am available in 1996. List price was $13,499, or about $26,523 in 2023 dollars. The factory-issued Monroney sheet for this car was still inside, so we can see that the original buyer got the car at Bob Ruwart Motors in Wheatland, Wyoming (about 175 miles up I-25 from this Pontiac's final parking spot), and paid a total of $16,054 ($31,543 in today's money) after the cost of options and the destination charge. The '96 Grand AM SE buyer had to pay extra for cruise control, air conditioning, power windows, rear glass defogger and other features we now take for granted on new cars. The base engine was the 2.4-liter Twin Cam four cylinder, a member of the screaming Oldsmobile Quad 4 family. This one was rated at 150 horsepower and 155 pound-feet. A 3.1-liter V6 with 155 horses and 185 pound-feet was an option. If you got the V6 in your '96 Grand Am, however, you couldn't get a manual transmission. This car has a proper five-speed manual, which made for fun driving with the high-revving Twin Cam engine in a machine weighing just 2,802 pounds (which is quite a bit less than what the current Honda Civic weighs). It traveled just over 160,000 miles during its 27 years on the road. The body and interior were still in fairly good condition when the car arrived here, so we can assume that some expensive mechanical problem doomed this car. Perhaps the original clutch wore out and the owner didn't consider it worth replacing. After all, a mid-1990s Detroit two-door with a transmission most people can't drive isn't worth much these days. Though nobody knew it when this car was new, the Grand Am would be gone in nine years and Pontiac itself would get the axe five years after that. It makes the ordinary extraordinary. Husbands and wives would argue for 12 hours over who got to drive the Grand Am, if we are to believe this ad. Proud sponsor of the 1996 Olympic team.
