1956 Oldsmobile 88 rocket 4 door made at the South Gate California plant it was #1413 of 88 rockets produced that year

It is equipped with the numbers matching 324 5.3 Liter V-8   and numbers matching 4 speed Jetaway Hydra-matic automatic transmission.

This has a 4 barrel factory carb and intake manifold.  56-3669  This vehicle is a single family ownership  produced in California and SOLD in California.

This car spent its entire life in Grass Valley California. Generally a dry climate but it did have some rust on the floors. During restoration the floors were cut out and NEW ones welded in.

There was NO rust on any of the body. The body has been sanded , primed and painted. 3 coats of white single stage and 5 coats of candy apple green metallic single stage. The Green also has 2 coats of clear over it due to its high metallic flake, as recommended by the manufacture,  to protect the paints integrity.

ALL of the glass is intact with a new drivers window just put in. All of the chrome trim is on the car with no pieces missing. Front and Rear bumpers are in good shape and STRAIGHT with average wear.  I would give a 6 out of 10 will probably need re chrome in a few years.

Wheels were painted to match the car with chrome center caps and polished aluminum  beauty rings. (beauty rings have dug into paint on rims a little bit but not very noticeable if your not looking for it)

ALL door handles and latches are full functional , ALL windows roll up and down smoothly. The doors all close firm and solid.

The trunk has been freshened up with flat black and  has NO rust. A new key was cut as the original truck key was lost. On the back of the trunk below the tail lights there were two metal caps they are missing. I was going to cap them with reflectors but you could probably find them on ebay. They were for back up lights that were a option in 1956

The interior is ALL WHITE and ALL NEW with hand made door panels , Hand made lower kick panels and freshly recovered seats with fresh foam underneath. ALL dash and window trim pieces have been freshened up (sanded , primed, painted)  White of course with two new visors . ALL chrome on dash has been polished with no major pitting on any of it.  The Carpet is NEW and it is dark Green to hide the dirt  and match the over all color scheme of the car.  Seat tracks have been cleaned and oiled so they operate front to back smoothly.  The gas pedal is missing the rubber but is still operational. There is NO head liner.

The engine has been freshened up on the top end. It does NOT smoke , has great compression and runs very quiet.  ALWAYS starts first turn of the key. The carb was rebuilt and is now sealed tight with no gas leaks. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor all complete the motor for a good strong running engine. BOTH rear motor mounts were replaced with NEW ones. The old ones were cracked and dilapidated  causing play in the motor up and down which would cause the drive line to bump the Frame rails on the under carriage of the car. ALL has been fixed. The generator / alternator has been rebuilt and repainted (looks new). New Battery. ALL of the engine wiring has been sorted cleaned up and rewrapped. The radiator checked good and was repainted. The gas tank was bad it was replaced with a NEW fuel cell from Summit Racing equipped with a roll over valve and was painted to match the motor. Relocated to the trunk. ALL fuel lines were flushed and or replaced. Fuel pump was rebuilt previous and is in perfect working condition.  The transmission is working good and shifts smooth great for cruising.

The brakes have ALL been checked and replaced with NEW shoes and NEW bleeder screws. They are drums all the way around and are functioning properly. Emergency brake was tightened and is working perfect. Headlights work high and low beams. Tail lights, brake lights and turn signals ALL work.

All the way around this is a 95 percent complete restoration.  A little bit of life has happened and I cannot finish.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
