You are bidding on my 1950 Oldsmobile "88" 2 door Club Sedan. This car is in very original condition no major modifications - it is essentially a great example of a car as it was delivered new. I believe I am the 3rd or 4th owner of the car and I do have quite a bit of information on it's past. The car was originally delivered new from the Taylor Motor Car Company, Taylor Texas so the car is a Texas car. I have some original papers and the original keys and fob from that dealership. I bought the car from a gentleman in Westchester County New York who spent a great deal of time and money bringing the car up to spec and reliability. Again - I have a lot of his documentation describing that work. I have driven the car to many shows and events and it has proved to be extremely reliable. The V8 engine, transmission and rear are in very good condition and the car runs and drives very well. The car does not use oil or smoke nor does it have any issues with noises etc. During the time I have owned the car the brakes were replaced, carburetor rebuilt, the gas tank was cleaned and the rear shock absorbers were replaced with new old stock ones. Last year I had the headliner, upholstery and all rugs replaced with new stock appearing material. At that time all of the window garnish moldings were repainted except the windshield one. The paint on the car is an older paint job and shines well. You can tell however that it was an older paint job because there is evidence of dust here and there. Because of the color, it hard to see though. I have been through the car carefully and there is no evidence of ANY rust through anywhere. This includes the rockers, quarters, doors etc. The frame is also in very good - no rust at all, condition. When I had the upholstery redone I also had the trunk redone in the same rug material as the front of the car. This past summer I had the car completely tuned up that included rebuilding the distributor, new points, plugs, wires and vacuum advance. All gauges and electrics work on the car. The clock does not work and the radio will play once in a while - it probably needs to be looked at. The chrome is bright and shiny but looks to be original. A few of the pieces have very minor pitting but generally the trim is very good driver quality. The wide white tires are like new and still have nubs on them. They are belted not radials. The car has always been garaged and never driven in inclement weather. There are still a couple things that I would do to the car if I keep it. They include repainting the dash board as it shows some patina wear through on the passenger side. The windshield has a small stone pit on the driver side (of course) that might bother somebody - its not bad but it's there. The rear quarter trim on the passenger side looks to have been brushed by something so there are a few marks on it. It does look to be a relatively easy cosmetic repair though. Somewhere along the line, probably when the car was painted, the OLDSMOBILE letters were removed and filled in. I had wanted to put those back but never got around to it. I did find out that they are being reproduced. Lastly the rear bumper has a dent on it that is evident. Again it was not a show stopper for me but it might bother someone else. Other than that there are a few little rubber things missing here and there like door bumpers and the hood rubber seal was never there although I believe the clips are in the glove box. I've tried to describe the car as accurately as I could. The bottom line is that it is very hard to find a 1950 car in this original condition - especially a fest back Olds with a V8 in it. This car never even got dual exhausts on it! Which to me was very surprising. It is a solid, reliable and comfortable car that loves to cruise at highway speeds. I hate to part with the car but I am now at an age where it is time to simplify things a bit. The car is located about 30 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. I am about 2 miles off of Route 95 and 5 miles off of Route 495. You can call me on my cell for more details on the car at 978-273-9175. I expect $500.00 down payment via PayPal at the end of the auction and the balance in wire transfer, cash or bank check prior to release of the car. You will responsible for the picking up of the car because I have no way to ship it. The car has a clear Massachusetts title in my name. . This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]
Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant
Wed, 18 Jun 2014If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.
Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
