Up for bid or buy it now is my '70 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible.
This car was a 2000 AACA National Champion and is one of the most correctly restored Cutlasses you'll ever see. Just prior to that it received a full frame-off restoration. (Note: I was not the owner at that time. I purchased the car from that owner through a consignment dealer.) I have used it lightly for shows and evening drives and ice cream runs. It has been exercised throughout the winter when possible but never driven through rain or snow under my ownership.
THE DETAILS
Engine: 350 ci (5.7L) Oldsmobile Rocket V8, 4 barrel carb, high compression. When new, rated at 315 hp (gross).
Transmission: Turbo-hydramatic 3 speed automatic with floor shift.
Options/Features: Power steering, power brakes, cold factory A/C, working AM radio, vinyl bucket seats with console, repro GM floor mats, body matching Super Stock II wheels (5), repro BF Goodrich bias ply whitewall tires (5), glass rear window, dual body colored side mirrors.
CONDITION
I have bought and sold several vehicles on eBay over the years. I intend to keep my 100% rating by being honest with my buyers. That said, Ill take you through the entire car.
Engine/Trans: Undoubtedly the finest part of the car. The 350 starts and runs as when new. This car is quick. It idles and accelerates smoothly and shifts are nearly undetectable. Transmission rebuilt 2 years ago. All GM belts, hoses and hardware were used during restoration. The only 2 items under the hood not GM are a recently replaced voltage regulator (NAPA) and the battery (Diehard). The A/C compressor was rebuilt 2 years ago and converted to R-134. The only appearance glitch under the hood is discoloring of the master cylinder, apparently from a fluid spill. There is a very small transmission fluid drip if the car sits for a long period. When run regularly, the seal tightens up and the drip stops.
Chassis: Clean, straight and rust-free. No suspension or alignment issues.
Interior: Very good condition. All lights work except glove box. All gauges work except clock. AM radio, heat and A/C work well. Vinyl upholstery perfect except 2 small slits in the passenger seat back (I have included a photo). Minor sun fading of carpet and top of door panels (hey, it's a convertible). Crack in bottom of horn bar. All trim, hardware, latches, emblems, fake wood, etc. in excellent shape.
Top: White convertible top is in excellent shape. Fits well and raises and lowers fine. Glass rear window. Parade boot is included but could stand to be re-dyed.
Trunk: Flawless, including mat, tire, SSII wheel.
Body: Show-quality paint is mostly excellent with a couple exceptions I will describe later. Chrome is excellent with exception of some pitting on pot metal pieces where front fenders meet A-pillar. Stainless pieces good with no dings. Bumpers are excellent. Glass is excellent. SSII wheels excellent except for fading of center emblems (easily and cheaply replaced). Tires excellent. All lights work except back-ups have been intermittent since transmission work (likely something loose).
Issues: While gorgeous from 10 feet, a few paint issues exist. There is a small bubble on the lower left corner of the passenger door, as well as one just rearward of it between the door and the wheel arch. (See photo). There is a "raised spot" between the upper right trunk lid corner and the top. I have been told by my body guy that it is solid and not a rust issue. It is caused by body flex around the trunk hinge, and is not uncommon. To me, it's been a non-issue but I wanted to point it out. The main issue is some paint rash on the left front fender. I appears on the top of the fender and on the side in front of the wheel. (see photos). There is no paint breakthrough whatsoever, and from a few feet or in the right light its almost invisible. My body guy told me it appears that that particular panel had a small amount of moisture in the primer when painted. This causes a small amount of surface rust under the paint. There appears to be no serious rust issue. A few chips elsewhere on the car have been touched up when needed.
Conclusion: I have tried to be painfully honest. In essence this a car that was a national winner 13 years ago and would take very little to bring it back to nearly that condition. I considered having everything taken care of before selling but decided to let the new owner decide what to do and when. This allows me to sell the car for less money. Its a win-win for me and the buyer, especially one that can handle the work him/herself. But make no mistake: it can also be driven and enjoyed as-is for years to come. This is a solid, well-running summer fun car that I am pricing lower than what I paid. With collector cars currently on the rise again, these GM B-bodies are solid buys.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison
Thu, 13 Nov 2014The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
