1970 Olds Cutlass W-31 on 2040-cars

Jackson, Michigan, United States

For Sale: 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Hardtop W-31

1970 Cutlass S Hardtop W-31.  Unrestored, survivor condition with 59,000 original miles.  Burnished gold (paint code 58) with black stripes and black interior.  Four speed with 3.42 rear.  Correct carb, harmonic balancer, aluminum intake, ram air cleaner, etc.  Original, numbers matching engine and transmission (see photos).  The rear end is not original to the car.  The rear currently under the car was removed from a 1970 W-31 that was front end wrecked in 1975, with approximately 50,000 miles.  Standard steel wheels (all five are Code XT, and dated November, 1969, or just prior to the build date of car),  with dog dish hubcaps.  Manual steering and brakes.  Original bench seat interior with a few  small seam splits.  The front tires are size 215 70R14, and the rear tires are size 245 60R14.  The tires look new, however, are 24 years old.

Owner verification back to 1972 as being an original W-31 car, however, no paperwork documentation found to this point.  Owner #3 (owned from 1972 – 1992) installed seat covers over the original front and rear seats in the 70’s, and installed two speakers in the rear package shelf.  If paper documentation was originally in this car it may have been removed when the seats were recovered, or when the wire was run under the carpet for the rear speakers.  The added seat covers were recently removed looking for paper documentation.  A very small section of the broadcast card is still attached under the rear seat, however the remaining portion is of no relevance.  I don’t know if paperwork is behind the door panels, under the headliner, etc.  I didn’t feel it was worth altering the car’s original state to look further at this time.

The owner history as I know it is as follows: Owner #1 worked at the Oldsmobile dealer in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, and kept the car one year.  Owner #2 was a local banker (I have his name) who also kept the car only about one year.  Apparently the reason he sold the car was to buy a family car.  I have not done any detective work to locate Owner #1 or Owner #2.  Owner #3 owned the car from 1972 to 1992, and put most of the miles on the car.  I have spoken with Owner #3, who provided much information.  Owner #3 had the car undercoated and Ziebart rustproofed in 1972, and the Ziebart sticker remains on the rear bumper.  The car was taken to the same Oldsmobile dealer for maintenance, and Owner #3 insisted the same mechanic always service the car.  The clutch was reportedly replaced once, and the intake manifold gasket was also replaced.  The car was repainted at the Olds dealer in approximately 1985.  Some rust repair in the lower fenders and quarter panel edges was needed at that time.  The car currently has some minor rust bubbling on the driver’s side lower fender, and on a small section of the lower driver’s door (see photos).  Original body panels, with no reported accident damage.  Owner #3 used the car as a daily driver from 1972 to 1985, and drove the car 15 miles to and from work.  After the car was painted in 1985, Owner #3 drove the car only about 1,000 miles until the time it was sold in 1992.  The Oldsmobile dealer mechanic who always serviced the car had told Owner #3 that he wanted to buy the car if it was ever for sale, and in 1992, the mechanic bought the W-31.  Owner #4 had a large collection of cars, and reportedly drove the car less than 200 miles from 1992 to 2012.  I believe the car remained in the same local area of Pennsylvania from 1970 until 2012.

This is a very good condition, low mileage, survivor, driver, W-Machine.  Located in Jackson, Michigan.  Not interested in trades.  The car is being sold as-is, with no warranty expressed, or implied.  Questions encouraged from serious buyers.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
