1953 OLDSMOBILE 98
HOLIDAY COUPE

RECENTLY ACQUIRED FROM AN ESTATE LIQUIDATION SERVICE IS THIS BEAUTIFUL OLDSMOBILE.  THIS CAR HAILS FROM COTTONWOOD, ARIZONA AND HAS ONLY VERY RECENTLY BEEN SHIPPED TO THE NORTHEAST FLORIDA AREA.  I HAVE OWNERSHIP HISTORY SINCE NEW WITH CURRENT ARIZONA TITLE AND REGISTRATION . THE TRUE MILEAGE IS 125,XXX  AND IS VERIFIED AND DOCUMENTED BY TITLE AND PRIOR SALES INVOICE.  THE PREVIOUS OWNER TITLED THE OLDS IN SEPT OF 1982. THIS OLDS IS A GENUINE RUST FREE ARIZONA CAR SINCE NEW WITH GOOD DOCUMENTATION.

DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION

 BODY AND PAINT

AS ONE  WOULD EXPECT OF AN ARIZONA CAR, THE BODY IS RUST FREE. ALL BODY PANELS FIT WELL AND THERE IS NO SIGN OF PRIOR ACCIDENT DAMAGE. THERE ARE FEW SMALL PARKING LOT DINGS BUT NOTHING SERIOUS. THE PAINT IS AT LEAST 30 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN TOUCHED UP IN SPOTS. I'M SURE IT IS A SINGLE STAGE PAINT, PROBABLY AN ACRYLIC ENAMEL. BECAUSE THE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGE KEPT THE PAINT RETAINS A NICE GLOSS AND IS VERY PRESENTABLE. I WILL RATE IT AT A 7.5.

CHROME AND STAINLESS

THE OLDS RETAINS ALL OF IT'S ORIGINAL CHROME.  THE GRILL AND BUMPERS ARE IN REMARKABLE CONDITION AND SHOW ONLY MINOR SCRATCHES AND WEAR. UNLESS A CONCOURSE RESTORATION WERE BEING DONE, RECHROMING WOULD NOT BE CALLED FOR. HOOD ROCKET IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BEING BENT DOWNWARD SLIGHTLY FROM HOOD CLOSING. HOOD AND TRUNK GLOBE EMBLEMS ARE IN  OK CONDITION. CHROME WINDOW FRAMES ARE EXCELLENT. TAILLIGHT BEZELS ARE EXCELLENT.  ALL MID AND LOWER BODY STAINLESS IS DENT AND DING FREE AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH A BRILLIANT SHINE.  STAINLESS AROUND WINDOWS AND WINDSHIELD IS VERY GOOD BUT COULD USE A POLISHING. FOUR FACTORY ORIGINAL FIESTA WHEEL COVERS IN MINT CONDITION.

UNDERCARRIAGE

THE UNDERCARRIAGE ON THE OLDS IS EXACTLY AS IT LEFT THE FACTORY IN 1953. IT HAS NO UNDERCOATING AND NO ONE HAS EVER GOTTEN UNDER THE CAR WITH A RATTLE CAN TO SPRAY PAINT EVERYTHING FLAT BLACK IN AN ATTEMPT TO HIDE THINGS. ONLY SOME MINOR SURFACE RUST. JUST AS SOLID AS THEY COME. YOU WILL BE PLEASED.

GLASS

EASY-EYE GLASS ORIGINAL FROM FACTORY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WINDSHIELD AND DRIVERS DOOR GLASS. ALL IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH SOME VERY SMALL SPOTS OF DELAMINATION ON THE QUARTER WINDOWS.

INTERIOR

THE UPHOLSTERY  I BELIEVE IS ALL ORIGINAL AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. CARPET HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A NON ORIGINAL TYPE BUT LOOKS FINE.  THE DASH IS IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION WITH NICE ORIGINAL PAINT. THE BRIGHT WORK IS IN WONDERFUL CONDITION IN ALL AREA OF THE INTERIOR INSTRUMENT FACES ARE ALL VERY CLEAR AND NICE. HEAD LINER IS NICE, CHROME HEADLINER BOWS ARE EXCELLENT.

ENGINE AND LUGGAGE COMPARTMENTS

ENGINE COMPARTMENT IS CLEAN AND ENGINE IS PAINTED THE CORRECT FACTORY COLOR. ALL IS PRESENTABLE. FIREWALL IS IN NEED OF A REPAINT. TRUNK IS CLEAN AND NICE. IT HAS BEEN RECARPETED WITH A NON ORIGINAL MATERIAL. THE ORIGINAL JACK AND TIRE TOOL ARE IN PLACE AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE SPARE TIRE IS A SEARS ALLSTATE  670 15 WITH ORIGINAL LABEL AND HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE GROUND. FACTORY JACKING INSTRUCTION LABEL IS IN PLACE AND IN GREAT CONDITION.

ENGINE

THE ENGINE IS THE ORIGINAL 303 V-8 WITH FOUR BARREL CARBURETOR.  IT IS NICELY PAINTED THE CORRECT GREEN COLOR. I MUST ASSUME THAT THE ENGINE HAS UNDERGONE A MAJOR OVERHAUL AT SOME POINT.  IT RUNS VERY SMOOTH, MAKES GOOD POWER AND DOES NOT SMOKE OR USE OIL. IT SHOWS NO SIGN OF EXCESSIVE WEAR.

TRANSMISSION

THE OLDSMOBILE HAS THE LEGENDARY  HYDROMATIC  FOUR SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.  IT SHIFTS SMOOTH AND SURE WITH NO SLIPPAGE. IT DOES OF COURSE LEAVE A DROP OR TWO OF FLUID ESPECIALLY WHEN SITTING A WHILE. JUST PARK IN YOUR NEIGHBOR'S DRIVEWAY AND YOU'LL BE FINE.

BRAKES STEERING AND SUSPENSION

BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER HAVE BEEN RECENTLY PROFESSIONALLY REBUILT. LINING AND DRUM INSPECTION PERFORMED AT THAT TIME AND FOUND TO BE IN LIKE NEW CONDITION. BRAKE SYSTEM IS 100%.  POWER STEERING WORKS AS IT SHOULD. ALL STEERING JOINTS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND REAR LEAF SPRINGS ARE ALL IN GOOD CONDITION 2 INCH REAR LOWERING BLOCKS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED TO LEVEL CAR. FRONT KNEE ACTION SHOCKS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AS ARE THE REAR CONVENTIONAL SHOCKS. DUAL EXHAUST IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH NO EXHAUST LEAKS.

LIGHTS

HEADLIGHTS, HIGH AND LOW BEAM, BRAKE LIGHTS, PARKING LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS ALL WORK PROPERLY AS DO THE INTERIOR COURTESY LIGHTS AND ALL INSTRUMENT LIGHTS.

GAUGES AND INSTRUMENTS

SPEEDOMETER, OIL PRESSURE,  GAS GAUGE, AMP GAUGE, HORN, AFTERMARKET TEMPERATURE  GAUGE ALL WORK PROPERLY. VACUUM WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE SLOW.  RADIO AND CLOCK DO NOT WORK.

POWER OPTIONS

POWER WINDOWS AND POWER SEAT ARE ELETCROHYDRAULIC AND WORK WELL. POWER STEERING AND BRAKES WORK WELL.

TITLE

I HAVE A CLEAR ARIZONA TITLE IN HAND.  I HAVE RETAINED THE AZ TITLE FOR PROVENANCE  REASONS. I WILL BE HAPPY TO CONVERT IT TO A CURRENT FLORIDA TITLE IN MY NAME IF YOU WISH.

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
