I am selling this vehicle for a friend. She has owned the vehicle for about 4 or 5 years, and it is a one-family vehicle that has always been responsibly owned and well-maintained. She is selling because she is going abroad to teach and needs the start up money and cannot use the vehicle herself.

This car is a strong runner that has a couple minor issues but is ready to go another 100,000 miles. A couple have sold recently with over 250,000 miles. This one has 125,000, has always been well maintained, and runs perfectly. Uses no oil, shifts and runs very smoothly.

Added info: My mechanically minded father in law drove this car today. He said it will need a front driver's side wheel bearing soon (part about $80) and the ABS does not seem to be working. This easily went unnoticed since the roads had not been snowy until recently and the owner starts and stops very gently in general. Make offers given the condition of the car. It is a very nice vehicle, but there are a few things that will need attention. She will likely accept the best offer that comes in by the time she needs to leave.

Before you read further, here are the unique conditions for buying this car. She is still using the car and needs it until at least a couple days prior to her departure flight, which is the 16th of January. Pick up could be from her (near Parma, Michigan) on the 13th, 14th, or 15th, or it could be from me in Hillsdale Michigan on the 16th or later. However, please do not click "buy it now" unless you are ok with waiting till the 13th at the earliest to take possession of the car. In the off chance that something happens that changes the condition of the car between the time you buy it and the time you can pick it up, of course you would be fully reimbursed and have no responsibility to purchase it, unless you preferred to continue but at a new price.

The deposit is non-refundable unless the condition of the vehicle changes for some reason. It is just to guarantee interest in the vehicle, because it would be a major problem for her if the buyer backed out at the last minute.

This car will also be listed locally on the Jackson, MI craig's list, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if necessary.

I am also offering to deliver the car a reasonable distance (probably 200 miles or so, possibly more depending on my interest in visiting the area you live in :) I could do this for the cost of gas plus $15 times the number of hours it takes to drive there and back. The chase vehicle would probably be a Prius, so it would not be that expensive.

The bads: There are a couple issues. The horn does not work, and seemingly associated with this is the fact that it makes a clicking noise sometimes at random. It sounds like the clicking of the turn signal but at varying speed, when the turn signal is not actually on. Since this does not affect  the performance of the vehicle (and I can't imagine her ever honking at someone anyway), the car has been this way for years. Recently the rear passenger window stopped working and it is held in place with tape (if the tape is taken off it will fall down). Finally, the "Service Engine Soon" light on the dash is on. She took it in to the mechanic to have this checked out, and he said it was something that could be replaced at some point but would not affect the performance of the car or harm in it any way if left alone. As any recent college grad who is working an entry level job and replaying loans might choose to, she decided to hold off on the replacement. Having said this, the car has been very well-maintained and any needed work is always done right away with high grade parts.

The goods:

Recent repairs include a new fuel pump, front brakes with new calipers (rear brakes good), new tires (over $400) around Thanksgiving, recent alignment. Receipts for work available.

No rust at all, and there are no blemishes on the car that I can find at all. The interior is basically like new. The owner is a very responsible and neat person. She also drives just under the speed limit always.

This car has the 2.2 inline 4 engine with an automatic transmission. I have driven this car, and with the kind of pick up it has, I thought it must have the V6. I also did not think it could possible get good mileage. I was surprised when we drove to Indianapolis from Hillsdale, MI and back (almost 400 miles) for under $50. Doing the math, we were getting at least 35 mpg and used about the same amount of gas as when I made the trip with a Toyota Corolla. Of course that almost all expressway. The car is rated to mid/upper 20s in town and low/mid 30s on the expressway.

This feels like a big car, whether you are driving it, riding in it or packing it. Plenty of space for driver, passenger and those in the back seats. It also has a very spacious trunk and would be great for either travel or commuting.

This Alero has a tow package and plenty of power to pull a small load (though I do not know if it ever has). The ball is not pictured but is included.

Only 125,000 miles (slowly increasing as it is still a daily driver). The owner lives in the countryside north of Jackson, MI and most of the miles are from use on expressways, highways or country roads. The car was previously owned by her uncle in S. Dakota, so it has only seen 4 or 5 Michigan winters with very light use.

I do not know the sub model of this Alero. It does have a spoiler, CD player and good sound system. Cruise control is great, and it has cold AC (in the summer too!) and hot heat. Based on the features, it looks like it is either a GX or GL1. It does not have a sunroof, but it does have a remote entry keyfob and it looks to me like it has fog lights. So it looks to me like a GX upgraded with some optional features.

I did not clean the car or engine whatsoever before taking pictures. This is exactly how she maintains her car and is a little messier than usual due to Christmas gifts being in the back seat.

I try to be thorough with my vehicle listings. If I missed any important information, please feel free to contact me.

As you can probably tell, it was snowing as I tried to take some pictures, and a little bit of snow got into the car when I opened the door.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
