Up for auction is my 1972 cutlass S with many 442 options. In 1972 the 442 was just a cosmetic package and could be added to any Cutlass. The VIN does not tell you if it is a real 442 so I do not know if this car is or not. It has sat for over 15 years and only used ocassionally the 15 years before that. The previous owner had the car for 30 years and bought it in 1982. He gave me several pictures of the car just after it had been repainted in the eighties which I will pass along to the new buyer. He says the 34K miles are original. There is no wear on the seats and the door hinges are tight but have no documentation. It has an original GM OIA ram air hood with fiberglass top and metal bottom. The twist latches work great. This hood was added in the eighties when the car was repainted. It has only been repinted that one time. It is and always was orange with a black interior. It has the rally steering wheel and tilt wheel option. It has the center console with the Hurst dual gate shifter. It has the TIC TOC TACH and orange needles for the oil, temp, fuel and amp gauges, this was the rally pac option. It has power steering, power disc brakes with rear drums, 4 core radiator and top plate. It has the 442 rear bumper with trumpets and dual exhaust. Has good buckets and rear seats but the material is brittle from the sun. It has the original numbers matching 350 oldsmobile engine but a rebuilt (15 -20 years ago) non numbers matching turbo 400 transmission. The rear is an open 10 bolt "O" type. The rear floors are nice but the fronts are rusty and the drivers side has a good size hole. The dual snorkel air cleaner is not for the OIA hood as the air cleaner is for the std. hood that came on the car originally. A tree branch has gone through the hood and split the metal under side and needs to be fixed. Hood still works and twist latches are good. The front fenders are very nice with no rust holes. The deck lid is nice with a little surface rust. Around the front and rear glass looks OK but you can see a few rust flakes in spots. The quarters and drop offs need repairs. The frame looks OK with scaly rust. Do not have a lift but have a floor jack if someone wants to stop by and take a closer look. The trunk floor and taillight surround is not good and the worst part of the car. The rear wing is an original GM part. Has the 442 front grilles. There is a very good chance this could be a real 442 as clones or tributes were not the normal thing to do 30 + years ago like they are today. I could not find any paperwork or build sheets in the car. I or you could part this car out for my asking price but someone may have the metal skills and mechanical skills to bring it back to life. I have not tried to turn the motor over and the car is stuck in neutral as the shifter cable is stuck from sitting in neutral all these years. You will need a trailer or tow truck to get it home. I will need a $500.00 deposit within 24 hours of auctions end and the remainder within 7 business days. Car will not leave until check clears my bank. Cash always works. Previous owner found his old North Carolina registration and will get a quick claim title at DMV this week. I have a bill of sale and can pass that along until the title arrives. This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]
Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
