1972 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible-matador Red on 2040-cars
Randolph, Wisconsin, United States
1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass/442 Convertible freshly painted in beautiful Code 75 Matador Red If you have been looking for that classic muscle car investment then this rare Classic Muscle Car Convertible just may have your name on it! These 1970s muscle cars have incredible investment potential, and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember, when the top goes down the price goes up! This Olds does have the original numbers matching Rocket engine. I double checked the numbers and they do match the vehicle identification number. I purchased this droptop out of Grand Rapids Michigan about a year ago. It was garage kept during the prior ownership, and it has always been inside during my time with this red beauty. It has gone through a frame-up restoration during the past year. When I made the purchase this was a very clean car with no visible rust. At some point the rear quarter panels were replaced, but the paint needed to be freshened up. I was told this car had never been in any accidents, and everywhere I inspected I saw no signs of this car ever being damaged. With each passing year, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find a Matador Red 442 with black stripes in a convertible. Everyone who knows these cars know this color and interior combination is one of the most popular and most desirable. This body was recently restored with a gallon of code 75 Matador Red paint with the black W-30 stripes buried under the clear coat. The body was meticulously wetsanded at three different levels to bring out the mirror finish as evident from the pictures. After the paint work was complete there was a brand new set of 442 emblems installed with brand new 442 grilles attached to a new stone shield. Brand new headlight bezels and all new weatherstriping were also installed. No expense was spared to really make this car look spectacular. This Olds starts right up and drives down the road beautifully. The winning bidder will most likely have endless thumbs up wherever they drive. You should have an outgoing personality to drive a car like this, because everywhere you go people will be attracted to you like a magnet. The engine was nicely detailed and has just about every possible original factory part in place. This is a very highly optioned Oldsmobile with Power Steering, Power Front Disc Brakes, Power Windows, Power Bench Seat, Tilt Wheel, AM Radio, and Factory Cruise Control. I did test the cruise control when I first made the purchase and it did engage properly. That is a very rare option to have on one of these cars. The factory air conditioning is all hooked up the way it came from the factory, but it will need an R-12 Freon charge to blow ice cold. The prior owner said it was never converted over to the new type of refrigerant. There is a newer alternator, and new Monroe shocks in the rear. All new braking hardware and brake shoes were installed in the rear. These cars stop great with factory front disc brakes. The set of four wheel well opening moldings were all high speed polished. The rear bumper has the bumper guard option. The dual exhaust system was just installed brand new this past week with the rumble of flowmaster mufflers and the infamous chrome trumpet exhaust tips running out the rear. This car sounds exquisite to say the least. The convertible top is brand spanking new and was just installed last week and features a new glass back window. The top goes up and down very nicely through the switch on the dash, and the doors still open and close like back in 1972. The blue manufacturers driver door decal is brand new as are the GM mark of excellence medallions. All the seat belts are present for a family of six. The bench seat was professionally reupholstered and has four-way power with a nice arm rest in the center of the split bench. Sitting at the local drive in movie theater should be nice and comfortable for many years to come. I tried to place all of the original factory decals in the correct spots in the engine compartment, door jambs, and under the trunk lid. According to the OldsFaqs website only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an X in the vehicle identification number. This particular car was simply made to look like a W-30 model. The fender wells were only red on the very first 10 1972 W-30s that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971, so I left the original black fender wells when I restored this car. Ill give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442s started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and have never been replaced. All four floor pans are in very good condition as well as the undercarriage and frame. The carpeting is brand new with a set of four brand new black carpeted floor mats. This Olds rides on a set of four raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on Super Stock I wheels. All four wheels have new chrome lug nuts, all four bolt-on center caps, and all four beauty trim rings that were high speed polished. There is a 10-bolt posi-traction rear-end that is believed to be a 3.42 gear. This posi rear-end is what came with this car when it was ordered from the factory brand new. The original trunk floor is in nice original condition and was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray for the trunk to stay in nice condition for many years to come. The trunk carries a full size Super Stock I spare with the original jack, jack stand, bumper mount, and crow bar. This way if there is ever a mishap on the road with a quick tire change you can be back on the road in minutes looking complete. The majority of the chrome was professionally high speed polished and would be rated as very nice drivers quality condition or better. The original dash pad is in very nice shape with no cracks. The original AM radio still works. With the 442 sport wheel steering these cars is simply a delight. There are brand new wipers and they work on both speeds. The speedometer and odometer work as they should, and the gas gauge is accurate. All the original 1972 Cutlass/442 owners manuals are included inside the glove box. This sale is being made with a clean and clear Wisconsin title in my name. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find in this condition. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with the Rocket 350/180 horsepower V8 L-34 option and air conditioning listed at $60,720 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $40,940 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! Nada has the lowest condition value at $26,565 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable As-Is! The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. I tried to list everything I know about this car when writing this description. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]
Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison
Thu, 13 Nov 2014The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
