1970 Oldsmobile 442 W30 4spd Convertible with W27 Alum Rear

VIN 344670M217476

Find of the century

The only W30 4spd Convertible that is documented with it’s original paperwork to have come from the factory with a W27 Aluminum Rear end.

This is an original unrestored car. This W30 4spd convertible is Documented with it’s Original Window Sticker. It came from the factory as follows:

Triple Black with white stripes ,M21 4spd

W27 Aluminum Rear end with 3.91 Posi.

Anyone unfamiliar with the W27 Aluminum rear end option may ask why this is such an important option. GM used many of the same drive line parts in all of their brands. For example, the M21 trans could have been had in any GM muscle car. The rear ends were not so different in all of the GM muscle cars of this era. The most desirable GM cars had a special piece or pieces of aluminum mounted from the factory. Examples would be:

ZL1 camaro with its aluminum block (add $500k plus)

L89 aluminum heads (add $$$$$)

Cars with these factory options,  stand in a field of their own way above their cast iron brothers.

The W27 full Aluminum Diff is one of these strange and expensive options. The only way to get a factory W27 rear from the factory was to order it on a  W30. It was not available on any other car ever.

This car has never been advertised for sale. 44k original miles.  The paint is original with some flaws and blends. I hope that no one decides to restore this car. It is a time capsule and looks fantastic with its patina. The interior is in excellent condition. No rips or cracks in the seats, dash, console, etc. The carpet has a small spot (about 2”)worn through near the  pedals.

The body is rust free as well as the floors, frame, trunk, etc.

The engine spun a bearing early in life, the block is date coded and rebuilt to stock specs. This car runs and drives excellent. The top is perfect the glass is excellent. Some chrome shows age but is still presentable. The original wheels have never been replaced with aftermarket mags.

There were only 96 W30 4spd convertibles produced in 1970. There are less than 10 documented cars known to exist. The only way to know if a 442 is truly a W30 is to have one of the following:

1.  Original dealer paperwork

2.  IBM card stamped with W30 (only on later built cars)

3.  GM of Canada documentation

The only way to know if the W30 is a real 4spd car is to have the original dealer paper work (window sticker, order sheet, etc)  or GM of Canada docs showing the options on the car.

When buying a restored car, you don’t know how much metal was replaced during the restoration. This car is still wearing it’s original paint which shows that no panels have been changed. It has it’s original Window Sticker which proves that it is a real Triple Black 4spd W30 convertible with a W27 Rear End.

This could be your only chance to own a documented W30 4spd Convert with a W27 Rear end. The W27 Rear is a full Aluminum differential housing that was only available on W30s. Not to be confused with the Aluminum rear end cover that most people bolt on to a steel rear end. The cost to purchase a W27 rear alone is approximately $20k if you can find one. The fact that the car was born with the W27 is priceless.

In the past year some of the best examples of W30 4spd convertibles have sold in the $350k plus range. This is still less than Ram air IV Judge convertibles that have sold for up to $700k for the best example. The best Documented LS6 Chevelle convertibles have also been selling in the $400-500k range.

The reason that I mention these other brand cars is to note the fact that the W30s have room to climb in value. These other cars have nothing over a W30 in looks or performance. This W30 has 380HP and 500 foot LBS of Torque.

I will consider even trades for a 71 Hemi Cuda or a 71 440-6 Cuda convertible.

I will also consider taking other interesting cars in on trade. If you would like to speak with me, please message me for my phone number by clicking the “ask seller a question” tab.

This car is a nice driver in fantastic original condition. You will not be disappointed with this car.

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
