Nissan working on something radical for Le Mans
Tue, 17 Dec 2013With Porsche joining Audi and Toyota at the front of the LMP1 grid at Le Mans next year, Nissan is the next to be throwing its hat (and considerable R&D budget) into the proverbial ring. But only if it's allowed to do something radically different, according to the latest report in Car magazine.
Just what that means remains to be seen, but Nissan is reportedly in active discussions with the ACO (the body that governs the race) to see how far it can stretch the regulations. The ACO has taken an intriguingly different approach to equalizing performance, mandating the maximum amount of energy that can be used per lap instead of telling teams what kind of engines they can use. That's how Porsche is entering with a four-cylinder engine, Toyota with a V8 and Audi with a diesel six. But when it comes to the shape of the car itself, the rules are considerably more restrictive.
Unfortunately the rules would prohibit Nissan fielding the ZEOD RC (with its narrow front track) in the LMP1 class, relegating it instead to the Garage 56 slot for experimental racers (which the DeltaWing filled before). And the realities of endurance racing would effectively prohibit anyone from fielding an all-electric racer. Within those confines, though, Nissan is eager to find enough wiggle room to make something both visually and technically different from other LMPs. And if the ACO won't let it do so at Le Mans, it could turn to another race or series (like the Nürburgring 24) that would.
This Leaf glows in the dark
Fri, Feb 13 2015Pessimists may say that it's weird to have an all-electric vehicle look like it's radioactive. But when it comes to an effort by Nissan Europe to publicize the idea of using solar energy to power one's house or car, that'd be missing the point. Either way, the car looks pretty cool. Nissan is looking to get more people to go solar across the pond, and has given an all-electric Leaf a special glow coating to get the point across. Nissan worked with inventor Hamish Scott to create a special coating that allows the Leaf's paint job to absorb enough sunlight to give off a glow for as long as 10 hours of darkness. Go up to the Nordic countries, and that's still not long enough to get through a winter's night, but for most of the Continent, that'd certainly be sufficient. Better yet, the coating, which catches ultraviolet energy, is fully organic, though it'd take some smart science people to figure out how that's the case. But the coating is said to last a quarter century, which is a little longer than Leaf batteries are expected to last. The manufacturer worked with inventor, Hamish Scott, creator of STARPATH, which is a spray-applied coating that absorbs UV energy during the day so that it glows for between eight and 10 hours when the sun goes down. While glowing car paint is already available, as are glow-in-the-dark car wraps, the bespoke, ultraviolet-energized paint created especially for Nissan is unique thanks to its secret formula made up of entirely organic materials. It contains a very rare natural earth product called Strontium Aluminate, which is solid, odorless and chemically and biologically inert. Before next-gen arrives, Nissan Leaf may get 120-mile battery
Tue, Jul 7 2015As Nissan prepares to unveil its next-generation Leaf electric vehicle, the Japanese automaker may come out with an "interim" version of sorts that could spur lagging sales of the model in the US. So says Automotive News, which reports from a person familiar with the process who wasn't identified that Nissan soon may start selling a Leaf with a 30-kilowatt-hour battery, up from the current 24 kWh version. It could arrive as soon as next month. Indeed, Nissan's temporary solution may be to provide range-hungry drivers with a single-charge range of 100 to 120 miles. Sure, that doesn't quite match up with the distance a gas-powered vehicle can go on a full tank, but it would be an notable upgrade from the current single-charge range of 84 miles for the Leaf. Word first got out about the Leaf possibly adding a 30-kWh battery in late May. Nissan's contending with falling Leaf sales in the US that may be caused by both the expiration of some plug-in vehicle credits as well as the prospect of a glut of used Leafs back on the market as three-year leases run out. Through the first half of the year, Nissan sold 9,816 Leaf vehicles in the US, a 23-percent drop from a year ago. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said in a June 23 shareholders meeting that the company can improve battery technology enough to put an electric vehicle's single-charge range on par with the distance a conventional car can go on a full tank of gas.
