2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V in Aztec Red 130,500 miles
Features: 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine with 175 hp from the factory Six-speed manual transmission 17" factory wheels Sport-tuned suspension Keyless entry Power windows and locks Sunroof Race-inspired seats New brakes Air conditioning recharged One owner Clear MD title in hand I bought this car new from South Point Nissan in Austin, Texas on 7/28/03. I used it as my commuter vehicle for the better part of ten years until getting something larger last fall. Since then I've driven it to work an average of once per week. It is in good condition, though it is an older car, shows some wear, and has typical paint chips and maintenance needs. Interior is in good shape as well. It has generally been a very reliable daily driver for me and is a blast to drive. I really enjoy driving this car. It has good power and responsiveness and corners nicely. The six speed manual is a ton of fun. I changed the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic every 4,000 miles until the car reached 100k miles and since then I've changed it every 5,000 miles. This car has never seen anything other than a Nissan oil filter, and got a new one with every oil change. On 6/6/05 while I was driving to work (in Texas), a lady in the lane to my left going the same direction as me swerved into my lane to avoid someone crossing over the center line into her lane. The car sustained body damage to the left front and also on the right side as the car careened into the safety rail on that side. I took the car back to the dealership and it had about $4,500 worth of bodywork repairs done. Since then I've driven the car over 100k miles and while the front bumper sags a bit, the accident didn't adversely impact the way the car drives and you generally can't tell it was in an accident. I drove the car up when we moved to Maryland in mid-2006 and it has been up here since, after spending its first three years in Central Texas. The car has been modestly modified for performance, fuel economy, and reliability. In August of 2004 I bought and installed a Hotshot header (exhaust manifold). These cars are known to have trouble with the stock exhaust manifold catalytic converter breaking up and being sucked into the engine which causes catastrophic engine failure. Changing to the aftermarket header alleviated that risk altogether. In 2013 the Hotshot header rusted out around the bottom midpipe flange and I purchased a like-new NISMO header and installed it. The O2 sensor that was located inside the stock manifold has been relocated behind the cat in the midpipe using a DC sports extender harness that uses the stock car and sensor harnesses (no wires were cut) and I replaced the O2 sensor when I installed the NISMO header. The car has passed MD state emissions inspection every other year, as required. In December of 2004 I bought and installed an aftermarket Stromung stainless steel exhaust. The Stromung is a top quality piece with a nice exhaust note, and a highly desired part. I also installed an AEM cold air intake and solid motor mount inserts that eliminate "wheel hop" when the front wheels spin. I installed a lightened crank pulley as well. Other than those external engine mods the car is largely stock. Recent maintenance includes: New brake rotors and ceramic pads and bled the brakes in April of 2014. In August of 2013 I replaced the battery. In the winter of early 2013 as I was driving home from work the serpentine belt broke. I took the car to the Nissan dealer and they replaced the belt as well as drained the cooling system and replaced with new coolant. In December of 2012 when the car had 120k miles on it, I had new Bridgestone Potenza RE970 ultra high performance all weather tires installed on the car at Costco. These tires are very highly rated by TireRack and I've found them to handle really well even in wet weather with good ride quality. The tires were rotated at 127,500 miles and now have about 10k miles on them. In the summer of 2012 an air conditioning line ruptured and the A/C lost function. I took the car to the Nissan dealer, where they replaced the hard line and re-charged the A/C. The air conditioning cools as good as new now. The OEM headlights had become pretty clouded and one of the driving lights didn't function so this spring I replaced them with new TYR complete headlamp assemblies. I also had a brake light out so last month I replaced both brake lamp bulbs in the rear. The car is over 10 years old and has over 100k miles on it so it isn't perfect. The front end has paint chips, particularly on the hood. The windshield has minor chips and scratches typical of a car this age. There is a small, barely noticeable dent on the driver's side rear quarter panel that has been there since the day my son was born (long story). The driver's side door has some bubbling on the front edge down low which indicates rust underneath (pictured). Besides that the car doesn't show obvious signs of rust. The stock radio functions fine but the CD player ate the last CD I put in it, so I'd assume that doesn't work. Overall the car has served me very well and should have a lot of good years left in it with continued diligent care. As I said, it is great fun to drive. Blue Book value for "good" (defined as better/worse than 50% of the used cars out there) condition is $3,250. This is a NO RESERVE auction and the car will go to the winning bidder at the end of the auction. Car is located in Maryland and I have clear title in hand. Car is described accurately herein but is for sale as-is, where-is. I am willing to work with the buyer's chosen transporter, but buyer is responsible for any and all shipping fees. $500 deposit due via Paypal within 24 hours of the end of the auction. The balance is to be paid in cash at the time the vehicle is collected. |

Macron and Abe seek to avert messy Renault-Nissan breakup
Sat, Dec 1 2018TOKYO/PARIS – France and Japan's leaders met for bilateral talks to avert a diplomatic row over the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance on Friday following the surprise arrest of its Chairman Carlos Ghosn in Japan. With the carmaking alliance facing its biggest test after the ousting of Ghosn at Nissan and affiliate Mitsubishi over financial misconduct allegations, President Emmanuel Macron sat down with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. Ghosn's arrest to face accusations including the under-reporting of income has triggered new attempts by Nissan to weaken Renault's control of the Franco-Japanese alliance, adding to challenges facing Macron at home. Macron, whose government has repeatedly pressed Japan to share evidence unearthed by Nissan's internal investigation into Ghosn, "restated his firm wish that the alliance should be preserved, along with the stability of the group," an Elysee official said after Friday's meeting with Abe. Abe said it was important to "maintain a stable relationship," according to a spokesman for the Japanese leader. "However, he said the future of the alliance is up to the private-sector shareholders. The government of Japan does not prejudge the future of the alliance," the spokesman said. The French official quoted Abe as telling Macron that "the legal process must be allowed to take its course." LEADERLESS Tokyo authorities on Friday extended Ghosn's detention for a second time, by the maximum-allowed 10 days, local media reported. Prosecutors must file charges by Dec. 10 or arrest Ghosn for new crimes to hold him beyond that date. Tokyo prosecutors declined to comment. Nissan did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ghosn's detention has left the global auto alliance without its leader and main interlocutor with the French government, which owns 15 percent of Renault and wants to maintain the ownership structure enshrining its control of the partnership. But Nissan Chief Executive Hiroto Saikawa has made clear that Nissan wants to weaken the control of its smaller parent as it carries out a governance review. Renault's 43.4 percent Nissan stake ensures an effective voting majority at shareholder meetings, while Nissan's reciprocal 15 percent Renault holding carries no voting rights.
Recharge Wrap-up: Reverse graffiti powered by Nissan Leaf; BMW introduces Wallbox Pro
Mon, Sep 29 2014BMW has a new, faster version of the Wallbox home EV charger. The Wallbox Pro offers 7.4 kilowatts, and can charge the BMW i3 to 80 percent in under three hours. It features a seven-inch touchscreen and proximity sensor, plus an 11.5-foot cord. The Wallbox Pro can also be used with smart home systems such as lighting and heating. The Wallbox Pro is available in Europe, and will come to the US later in the year. Read more at Hybrid Cars. Nissan is using the Leaf to power the creation of "reverse graffiti" in London. The company has commissioned artist Moose to selectively wash dirt off of a wall outside of a subway station, leaving behind a mural of London landmarks. Moose used a jet washer powered by the Leaf's battery to create the piece. The goal is to highlight the amount of pollution in London and other large cities, which is not a new idea. "It is a reminder that electric vehicles don't have an exhaust to emit the kind of air pollution which has stained the wall Moose has created his piece on," says Nissan's Jean-Pierre Diernaz. See the artwork in the gallery, and read more in the press release below. Local Motors used a 3D printer to make the Strati electric car in 44 hours. The car was printed with 212 layers of carbon-reinforced ABS thermoplastic. After printing, the team then spent two days finishing the car to make it run. It is powered by the drivetrain from a Renault Twizy, and is capable of 40 miles per hour. Now the question is if this sort of small-scale car manufacturing using 3D printing technology will catch on. See how a car gets printed in the time-lapse video below, and read more over at Treehugger. Nissan cleans up London with the world's first car-powered graffiti - Nissan LEAF powers "Reverse Graffiti" street art in Waterloo - Mass-scale mural imagines a cleaner London, without car fumes - The artwork is on show in Waterloo, London near popular Southbank LONDON – Nissan is highlighting London's battle with air quality in the UK by using the 100% electric Nissan LEAF – the world's best-selling electric vehicle (EV) – to power a striking piece of street art in Waterloo, London that depicts the capital's iconic skyline. Nissan commissioned Reverse Graffiti artist Moose – the founder of his field – to create the mass-scale mural, which was unveiled today. Unlike traditional graffiti, Moose creates his art by cleaning dirt off surfaces using a jet washer or wire brush, leaving a striking design in negative on the wall.
Infiniti's new VC-T changes the rules of small turbocharged engines
Sun, Aug 14 2016The upcoming Infiniti QX50 crossover does not get our pulse racing, no matter how shapely the QX Sport Inspiration concept that previews it may be. No midsize SUV does, to be fair. But it has something special under the hood – the world's first production variable-compression-ratio engine. That means the QX50's 2.0-liter turbo four, which makes 268 horsepower and 288 pound-feet of torque, will have up to 27 percent better fuel economy. Here's how it works. The trend of moving to smaller, turbocharged engines carries with it one big falsehood. Under low load when the turbo isn't needed, these engines are less efficient than an equivalent engine without a turbo because of the low compression ratio the turbo requires. That is, if you never need the extra power, you're wasting fuel. Turbocharged (and supercharged) engines use a lower compression ratio to prevent detonation. When you force extra air in a cylinder and mix it with fuel, it's more likely to prematurely go boom. Lowering the compression ratio prevents this problem, but it's less efficient. Infiniti's VC-T promises the best of both worlds, with a compression ratio that ranges from 8.0:1 for high-power turbo needs to a 14.0:1 ratio for fuel-sipping efficiency. At its heart the VC-T engine is a simple idea, but it's complicated to explain. Consider yourself warned. The photo below from Infiniti serves as a good visual overview. For the truly nerdy, this patent application covers the mechanical concept. Instead of having the pistons connected to the crankshaft, Infiniti's engine has a pivot arm with a connection on each end. One end connects to the piston, the other connects to a second lower shaft, which is controlled by an actuator arm. At any given time the engine's pistons move up and down according to the lobes on the crankshaft. But the actuator arm can change the angle of the pivot arm up and down. That is, the pistons still move in the same motion with the same stroke, but phase the entire stroke up or down. Move the pivot up and there's less room at the top, which means a higher compression ratio. Move the pivot down and the compression ratio goes down, too. As an added bonus, the lower shaft eliminates the need for counter-rotating balance shafts. Infiniti says this system works constantly and can vary the compression ratio to any number between 8:1 and 14:1. It also uses electronic variable valve timing on the intake valves to switch into Atkinson-cycle combustion for greater efficiency.
