North Carolina now charging $100-per-year EV road-use fee

Tobacco Road just got a little more expensive for drivers of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S. This year, North Carolina started instituting an annual $100 road-use fee for electric-vehicle drivers in order to close at least a little of the budgetary shortfall for road maintenance in the Tar Heel State, the News Observer reports. North Carolina legislators failed to green-light a hybrid-vehicle fee of $50 a year, which may have made a little more of a dent in the state's road funding. As it is, about 1,600 EVs are registered in North Carolina, meaning that the state will collect about $160,000 in such fees this year. And while some in the state are concerned that the fee could hurt EV adoption, others say it's fair because of the $7,500 in federal tax credits EV buyers get. Oh, and the fact that EV drivers don't pay gasoline taxes. Either way, the fees are a proverbial drop in the bucket, as North Carolina's transportation shortfall is estimated to average about $2 billion a year during the next three decades or so. Other states are starting to charge EV drivers a road-use fee as well. Nissan Claims 'World's Cleanest Car' Crown

Nissan is claiming the title of "world's cleanest car" by coating a 2015 Nissan Leaf in superhydrophobic and olephobic paint. The paint repels water and oil by creating a protective layer of air between the paint and environment. It rejects water and oils so efficiently that dirt doesn't have a chance to set or streak, according to Nissan. Water and oil bead and wick away from the car's body, leaving the green machine clean. The paint is called Ultra-Ever Dry and it was developed by UltraTech International. It's just an experiment so far that's not yet been added to any production vehicles, but the paint company says Nissan is one of the first automakers to take an interest in the technology. Nissan has been tinkering with the paint for several months, and coated a European Note hatchback to showcase its possibilities. "No matter what the road throws at this Leaf, its Ultra-Ever Dry exterior coating will throw right back," UltraTech International Inc. CEO Mark Shaw told a crowd during a TED talk. Nissan bringing 2014 Versa Note to Detroit

Nissan today confirmed that it will be showing the 2014 Versa Note - not Versa, not Note, but Versa Note - at next week's 2013 Detroit Auto Show. And while we can't see a whole lot from this one teaser image, we're willing to bet that the car looks a lot like this.
All Nissan will tell us at this time is that the Versa Note will have "segment-exclusive technology, outstanding fuel economy, smart packaging and class-leading cargo space." Sounds... class-competitive.
Given how turned-off we are by the second-generation Versa sedan, it'll be interesting to see just what's in store for this Notably more functional version of the affordable compact.
