Mitsubishi shows off MiEV Evolution III for Pikes Peak

In May 2012, Mistubishi unveiled a completely unexpected version of the i-MiEV electric jellybean to challenge the climb up Pikes Peak, the MiEV Evolution. In 2013, the company unleashed the MiEV Evolution II. For 2014, well, you can probably guess. Say hello to the MiEV Evolution III. The latest, ahem, evolution of these cars features redesigned chassis and bodywork as well as a 50 kW boost to the electric motors, up to 450 kW, which translates to a 67 horsepower increase up to 603 hp. Two of these bad boys will tackle the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) later this month in the Electric Modified Division at the hands of drivers Greg Tracy and Hiroshi Masuoka. The race starts at 9,390 feet and ends at 14,110 feet above sea level and takes place June 29. Mitsubishi hasn't yet managed to win the EV category in. The first Evolution crashed during practice and last year Masuoka came in second in the EV division while Tracy came in third. The 2013 winner was Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima in the Monster Sport E-Runner. Will the third time be the charm? First run in 1916, the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a treacherous 12.42-mile/156 corner road course through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado commencing at an elevation of 9,390 feet and finishing at 14,110 feet – nearly 3 miles above sea level. The Pikes Peak race is the second oldest motorsports event in the United States after the Indianapolis 500. "Pikes Peak is an excellent laboratory for testing our advanced MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) technology," states Don Swearingen, executive vice president Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

Mitsubishi teases world premiere of new PHEV concept ahead of Geneva

It was a little disappointing to find out that Mitsubishi's "return of a legend" for the 2015 Chicago Auto Show would simply be the North American debut of the GC-PHEV concept. The crossover has a chunky, rugged design that's somewhat attractive, but it's not exactly new to the motoring world. Apparently, the Japanese brand understands the desire to see what's next because the company is now teasing the world premiere of a concept for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March. Mitsubishi promises that the still-unnamed concept "is a 'declaration of intent'" for the company's future. The only real hints that the brand drops about the vehicle is that it features a next-gen, two-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid powertrain and is a crossover. Judging from Mitsubishi's two teaser images, the design appears to be cribbing a lot from the brand's own XR-PHEV concept. Up front, the angular nose and headlight design look almost identical, and the pointed rear with integrated taillights seems basically the same, as well. Hopefully, the Japanese brand has something clever going on here and isn't just slightly tweaking a previous design. Mitsubishi profits in North America for first time in seven years

Well, this is a change of pace. Mitsubishi has actually made some money in North America. It's the company's first operating profit in seven years, and while it might only be $4.18 million – yes, Mitsubishi made less in 2014 than some professional athletes – it's definitely a start. Sales in the US were up 19 percent between January and March, to 32,000 units, while 2014's overall sales jumped 21 percent to 117,000 units, Automotive News reports. Perhaps more impressively, the company is predicting a bountiful 2015, with sales up to 128,000 units and operating profits climbing to $58.5 million. If Mitsubishi is doing this with cars like the ancient Lancer and the awful Mirage, we should probably expect some good things when newer, more competent vehicles like the new Outlander hit dealers.
