1,400 Mitsubishi vehicles lost in shipping tragedy

A cargo ship carrying 1,400 Mitsubishi vehicles from Japan and Thailand collided with another vessel off the coast of Belgium and the Netherlands yesterday. The 485-foot Baltic Ace was carrying cars from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Kotka, Finland when it collided with the 439-foot Corvus J. While the Corvus J sustained damage during the incident, it is not in danger of sinking, and its 12-man crew is currently still on board.
The Baltic Ace, meanwhile, went under. Three ships from the Royal Dutch Sea Rescue Organization, two navy vessels, four helicopters and one coastguard aircraft spent the evening searching for survivors, but rough seas and high winds hampered the effort. Eighteen of the Baltic Ace's crew, including the captain, were rescued after being found in life rafts, but six remain missing. The search for survivors has officially been called off.
The collision occurred in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North Sea, and the managers behind the Baltic Ace said they believed human error was to blame for the incident. Dutch police are currently looking into whether or not they can investigate the sinking despite the fact that the collision took place outside of the country's territorial waters.

Mitsubishi teases new compact crossover that could be called Eclipse

Does the world need another compact crossover? No, not really. But Mitsubishi could certainly use another vehicle in the hottest segment in America. And the Japanese automaker is about to show off a brand-new model at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show that will slot between the Outlander Sport and the larger Outlander. Rumors suggest that this new compact crossover might revive a well-known name from the past: Eclipse. While that's undeniably better than a random series of numbers or letters, or another riff on the Outlander moniker, Mitsubishi would surely alienate some of its hardcore fans by christening a CUV with the name of an old sport coupe. Here's hoping those rumors stay exactly that. Moving past the potentially controversial name, what we're looking at is a pretty conventional coupe-like two-box shape. The sloping roofline looks current, and the steeply raked rear glass adds a sporty flare. We've got a little over a month before we see the new 'ute in all its glory, and probably about a year before it's in US showrooms. Mitsubishi Mirage configurator is alive

Well, here's the butter knife Mitsubishi is bringing to the subcompact gun fight. It's called the Mirage, and its configurator has just gone live on Mitsubishi's consumer page, allowing those that absolutely must have a brand-new car for not a lot of money (and have never heard of the Nissan Versa, Mazda2, Chevrolet Spark or Ford Fiesta) to build their perfect example.
Prices start at $12,995 for a base DE model with a five-speed manual transmission and $14,195 for the up-market ES with the same transmission. A 74-horsepower, 1.2-liter engine is the sole powerplant. Both trims feature a continuously variable transmission for an extra $1,000 and a range of eight exterior colors, while black is the sole interior color.
Fully loaded with all the assorted packages - there are 10 on the ES model, adding things like navigation, a backup camera and LED ambient lights - the Mirage checks out at $19,540. Feel free to have a go at the configurator yourself.
