When a Dodge Grand Caravan or Ford Windstar mini-van pulls alongside you at the stoplight, you have to pause and wonder what's so mini about a vehicle that stretches from your front to rear bumper and holds seven people? The mini-van label has been awarded to a slew of vehicles. As evidence that mini may be a misnomer on most of those vans, you need only check out the 1994 Mitsubishi Expo, which holds seven people. Mitsubishi calls the Expo a sport wagon even though it looks like a van. Truth be told, Expo is a mini-van built on a 99.2-inch wheelbase and only 168.5 inches long. Those dimensions make it a true mini, considering the regular Dodge/Plymouth mini-van is built on a 112.3-inch wheelbase and is 178.1 inches long. Whether you call it a wagon or a van, the Expo is a weird-looking bird. The only way you can lose an Expo in a parking lot is if you are legally blind. Like the Mitsubishi Montero sport-utility vehicle, the Expo roof line seems to tickle the clouds. While Montero styling comes across as outdated and ugly, Expo is novel and borders on cute. The tall roof line means ample head room, yet you don't feel the raised center of gravity when behind the wheel trying to maneuver the streets. In fact, Expo performed admirably on snow-packed surfaces. While the roof line reaches for the clouds, the storage space behind the rear seat takes on an ample serving of groceries, luggage or golf clubs. The one styling drawback is you don't see the sloping hood from the driver's seat. That leaves you with the impression that there isn't much crush space between you and anything ahead. The Expo is new for '94, a 2.4-liter, 136-horsepower, 16-valve 4-cylinder and automatic.. The 2.4 is rated at 25 m.p.g. city, 27 highway, though the tortoise-like movement of the gas needle made that seem a bit low. Standard equipment includes driver-side air bag (new for '94), plus air conditioning (with chlorofluorocarbon-free refrigerant), AM/FM stereo with cassette, power windows/door locks, remote keyless entry, power remote mirrors, cruise control, tinted glass, rear wiper/washer/defroster, four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, 14-inch all-season tires, power brakes and steering, tilt steering, cloth seats, reclining front bucket seats, foldable/removable rear seat and stainless steel exhaust. Junkyard Gem: 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo
Mon, Jul 3 2017When Diamond Star Motors, a Chrysler-Mitsubishi joint venture, came online in the late 1980s, the first products to come out of the Normal, Illinois assembly plant were versions of the first-generation of the Mitsubishi Eclipse. There was the Eclipse itself, the Eagle Talon, and the Plymouth Laser. Here's a somewhat tattered example of the latter type, spotted in a Northern California self-serve yard. This car is unrelated to the Chrysler Laser of a few years earlier, which was based on the K-platform-derived Dodge Daytona. The Plymouth Laser was a pure Mitsubishi design. This one has the DOHC turbocharged 2.0-liter Sirius engine, rated at 190 horsepower. That was plenty of power by 1990 standards, a year in which the wildest possible Chevrolet Camaro (the IROC-Z, of course) packed just 230 hp under the hood. The IROC-Z weighed 3,149 pounds versus the Laser's 2,483, giving the Laser a slightly better power-to-weight ratio, not to mention a price tag more than $500 lower. CD players in cars were still uncommon in 1990; this Laser has the much more mainstream "computer controlled deck" cassette player, complete with nine-band graphic equalizer. Badging in futuristic typefaces was all the rage when this car was new. The all-wheel-drive Eclipse/Talon/Laser didn't hit dealerships until the 1991 model year, so all the '90s are front-wheel-drive only. The torque steer experienced in these cars could be exciting. Mitsubishi ASX is French for Outlander Sport
Fri, 28 Sep 2012Mitsubishi has revealed the Euro-version of the same Outlander Sport model that debuted with updates earlier this year at the New York Auto Show. No, the French do not call it the Royale Sport (with cheese), but rather the ASX.
The crossover has received a range of aesthetic and engineering tweaks, including revised interior fabrics. Designers have also abandoned the old rotary knob switch for the vehicle's all-wheel-control system in favor of a pushbutton interface, though the largest change to the recipe comes in the form of a reworked multi-link rear suspension. Powertrain options remain unchanged, however, with a total of three engine mills on deck, including a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 115 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission in two-wheel drive configuration.
Those hunting up a little more traction can step up to a 1.8-liter diesel with 147 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque paired with a six-speed manual and the buyer's choice of either a two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive system. A low-CO2 1.8 diesel is also available with 114 horsepower. You can check out the full press release below for more information.
2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will debut in New York
Fri, Jan 8 2016Mitsubishi is betting big on crossovers and EVs, and some promising stuff is in store for the end of this decade. But in the very near future, the first product in Mitsubishi's EV/CUV strategy will launch in the US: the 2017 Outlander PHEV will finally bow at the New York Auto Show in March. I say "finally" because Mitsubishi already offers a plug-in Outlander in other markets, and overseas the PHEV crossover is off to a great start. Mitsubishi is seeing "great success in Europe," according to Ken Konieczka, the company's VP of sales operations. And when the Outlander PHEV launches in the US later this year, Konieczka thinks it'll attract a lot of new buyers to the Mitsubishi brand. I got to see the 2017 Outlander PHEV at a small event in Detroit on Thursday. It's the only one in the country, and still has to undergo some more testing and development before the CUV ready for the spotlight. Perhaps that's why Mitsubishi parked it in a dark corner of Detroit's Garden Theater. Compared to the regular Outlander you see pictured here, the PHEV doesn't look all that different save some badges on the tailgate and front fenders and, of course, the charging port. But that's not all Mitsubishi has in store for New York. The Mirage G4 sedan will also bow at that show, after its Canadian introduction at the Toronto Auto Show in February. Like the Outlander PHEV, the Mirage G4 already exists in other markets, and Mitsubishi says it has the largest interior volume of any sedan in its class. More information about both models – including pricing and specifications – will be available when both cars hit the Javits Center stage in March.
